Barbarian Gearing Up and Stats Priorities While Leveling

As you and your enemies level up, your character will become more powerful due to increased base stats and the availability of new skills and runes, while your enemies will hit harder and become much difficult to kill. In order to maintain your efficiency and avoid having to lower the game difficulty, you should keep your gear up to date.

Your character's Damage and Toughness are closely connected. In order to maximize your leveling efficiency, you want to have as much Damage as possible, while having enough Toughness to survive any challenge presented to you by your current difficulty settings.

1. Updating Your Gear

Occasionally, you will end up having items that are several item levels lower than your character's level and you will start losing efficiency. When this happens, you can either lower the difficulty in order to clear more content and thus obtain more items, or you can simply visit the vendors in town and check for possible upgrades (do not bother crafting while leveling). Each time you recreate the game, vendors will be selling different items and you can potentially find an upgrade for every single slot. You should not abuse this process, as it is time-consuming (and can end up actually causing you to waste time).

It is also imperative to distinguish between One-Handed and Two-Handed Weapons and understand their impact on your character's performance.
We describe this at length in our Barbarian Basics guide, so we encourage you to read it.
