Less DPS than a sloth with Downs... help?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm an unholy DK with an ilevel of 657, and am doing Heroic Highmaul with my guild. I'm ATTEMPTING to follow the standard rotation, which includes keeping diseases up, using Defile when movement is minimal, using Death Coil to spend RP, using Plague and Festering strike to use other runes, etc. I'm struggling to break 20k dps on most fights in H Highmaul, and have tried using rotation helper addons and such to bring my dps more in line with where I figure it should be... to no avail.

I'm hoping someone can take a look at my profile and my log from our raid on the 21st, and let me know if you see anything glaringly obvious I'm doing wrong. AskMrRobot says I should be pulling upwards of 25k, and yeah, not happening.

Thank you in advance, hopefully!

I had to tank on Kargath for the log posted, sorry for failing to mention that. All other fights on that log are valid Unholy DPS fights for me.

Looking at the Butcher logs, these are some of the issues that I see:

You seem to have used Icy Touch. For a purely single target fight, you should never have to use Icy Touch. You should be spending that frost rune instead on Festering Strike by pairing with a blood rune (ideal) or with a death rune.

You also seem to have about 21 plague strikes which seems excessive. You can start the fight with Outbreak and the only times where you will need to plague strike is if the diseases fall off or you plague leech and Outbreak is still on cooldown. The runes are better spent on Scourge Strike instead.

You are also using blood boil which should be used only to spread diseases (for <4 targets) if needed and on heroic butcher, there are no adds to spread diseases to.

Ok, thank you first off for the input and for reviewing my logs. Old habits die hard is all I can say regarding Icy Touch. I've since removed it from my rotation. I worked for about an hour on the rotation on the target dummy last night. I don't know what it would've been at previously, however after really tunneling on my runes and cooldowns, I was able to maintian 20.8k single target for a 6 minute period, reliably. I don't know what raid buffs add to target dummy dps, but I'm hoping on fights I can really tunnel and not have to move around on alot, ill be hitting 23-24k. We'll see as we raid tomorrow, but I appreciate the help.

If you add food, flasks, potions, raid buffs and Heroism into the equation, your static numbers will go up dramatically. On my main (Balance Druid), I can sustain 15k tunneling on a dummy self-buffed, but in a raid environment I do 21k+ with an ilevel of 645, with movement and all.

Melee characters tend to be better off when it comes to sustaining DPS while moving, since there's no need to interrupt channels. But having to be in melee range, it can be tricky. If you haven't mastered mouse-running, mouse-turning, and bound strafe to A and D, it makes a huge difference when playing a melee fighter.

All of the above, and to add: You cast Soul Reaper 19 times but it only procced 13 times. Hitting a boss with a proccless soul reaper is like firing a wet towel at him. This and Plague Strike are probably your biggest damage losses.

To "master" your spec a bit more, 59.1% uptime on our friend Timmy is low. Try keeping energy at around 70+ when Dark Transformation is about to end, and make it your #1 priority after soul reapers below 45% to get him back in beastmode.

If you get 21k on a target dummy as Unholy you're absolutely solid. You can't use Soul Reapers on those guys and raidbuffs etc. would easily boost you up to a total of 26k+ if you execute it perfectly.
