[Frost] DPS advice

Recommended Posts

Fairly new to wow as whole, started late last year and now sort of addicted. I followed the guides for the basic "how to play..." and lvling.

Now i have my frost mage maxed and venturing into normal highmaul raids (mostly PuG). DPS isnt decent and sometimes I find other forst mage similar (or few points lower average ilvl) doing marginally better than me. Using the recount ad on, i generally see myself doing 12-15k dps while seeing other frost mage going near 18-20k.

my current spell rotation is

Mirror image > icy veins > ice nova > frozen orb > ice lance > frost bolt

i've been mostly using glyph icy veins but recent tried out normal icy vein + thermal void, seen improvement in some fight and drop in some other fights...

gears

combat log...not sure if i posted this right but here it is:

All help and advice will be apprciated! thx

All your casts are way too low.  Only 3 Frozen Orbs in a six minute fight is not okay--you need to cast it on cooldown.  Same with Ice Nova--you should never have 2 stacks of it sitting.  Lastly, you aren't casting Frostbolt enough.  It should be your primary source of damage.  This usually means you either simply aren't always casting spells or it means you aren't casting while moving.  To solve the latter problem, use Icefloes.

Ah i see.

I think i worry too much about icy vein dying and end up casting more ice lance without FoF proc just to enxtend its duration with thermal void. Sometimes its for the mirror image to get gylph ice veing buff whole duration other times i extend until my orb gets off cooldown.

I guess I shouldnt worry too much about exteding IV and focus more on frostbolts.

With ice floes, any macro i should be using with it?

Pancakz is correct - I cast Frozen Orb whenever it's up.  I find the following priority works well for me..

I've macro'd my CDs (1 key-click as they're all instants):

-Use Int Pot

-Icy Veins

-Berserking

-Mirror Images

Opening pull, I typically blow CDs (depending on the fight) and then send in Frozen Orb and lay my Prismatic Crystal.  Priority on my Prismatic Crystal at this point:

-Ice Lance if FoF proc

-FFB if Brain Freeze proc (but NOT if I have FoF procs, I blow those before FFB because FFB could proc FoF)

-Ice Nova (1 charge or both, depending if none of the conditions above in priority are met after my first charge goes off)

-Frost Bolt fill until one of the above happens

I personally chose Prismatic because I didn't want to hesitate if I didn't have FoF proc to extend Icy Veins.  Just a personal thing, I suppose.  I have no theorycrafting to support it as a better choice.  I'm sure someone else will have some sound advice there.

Single-Target priority pretty much follows my opening sequence, except I send Frozen Orb in pretty much EVERYTIME it comes up off of CD.  And don't blow your waterjet if you have frozen orb in there, you just waste FoF procs doing that.  I'll hold on to Frozen Orb if waterjets is up or vice versa.  And not sure if you're doing this or not, but time your Waterjet so that your pet begins to cast it mid-cast of your Frostbolt.  That way you get in the 2 Frostbolt casts before your pet finishes - giving you 2 procs of FoF to begin Ice Lancing.

AoE for me is just send in the Orb, FoF procs until they stop proccing, then blow my Ice Nova charges. And work down my single-target rotation until I get some FoF procs or Ice Nova procs.

If I have to move, I use Ice Floes/Frostbolt if I don't have any instants ready or procs.

Hope this helps - Xsen <What Would Rambo Do> of Medivh

IL without FoF is always a DPS loss.  This includes when TV is up.  In other words, no matter what, never cast IL without FoF procs.  Never attempt to extend TV without FoF procs.

Also, MI just got nerfed *grumble grumble*, so RoP is the better option if you don't need to move much.  I'm still curious to see how well IF works even in single target encounters with a small amount of cleave.

Also also, don't forget that Comet Storm is now generally the best T7 talent, particularly for single target.

Lastly, I wouldn't macro Ice Floes.  I bind mine to "E" so it's easy to hit if I need to move real fast.

Ahh thx for the advice guys. Improved my dps a little and got accepted in most PuG.....and got better ilvl item now.

Most of recent fight i did around 18-20k, and was cast frostbolt most number of time while ice lance doing the highest damage with less ice lance casted. I think i found where my majoy mistake was now xp. Also timing aqua jet + (IV+MI) + frozen orb grealty improve my damage too.

6.1 patch notes:

  • Mirror Image copies of Frost Mages now deal 15% less damage with Frostbolt.

      Greetings!

I'm starting a newbie friendly guild, now that I have A LITTLE more experience with the game.
The guilds at my realm never really talk at the guild chat, never really interact with anyone... So I decided to solve this problem myself.
The problem is... I'm a huge noob. Despite playing since MoP, I still have trouble with the game, since most of the time I did WorldPvP and... nothing much really.

So I need a few tips, for example:
How do I make my guildmates interact more?
How can I make everyone feel good at my guild?
Do professions help with the recent 110s? Like Blacksmithing?

Thank you so much for your attention!

Hey, so I've recently decided to main a BM hunter for the rest of legion and was just curious if there was some helpful tips out there (I've been reading up on the guides/forum posts but trying to see if I'm doing ok).

      this is me. https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/character/nagrand/greenmidget

sorry, I haven't done this before so I don't have any data to link or know how to use stuff like Warcraft logs or sims. I've also haven't done many runs of tombs yet so don't have any tier pieces.

looking at the icy veins guides I've talented for dire frenzy but didn't realise how much mastery I ended up with. Have I gone too crazy with mastery, should I be adjusting my stat prio better? Thinking I should probably gem for more haste. Most of my enchants/ gems I'm using are just ones I had the highest rank for and cheapest to make so my necklace is probably enchanted wrong.

i probably specced for mostly single target and think I've been doing fairly poorly for AoE damage compared to other people around my ilvl. Although I know to use multi-shot to refresh beast cleave I probably spam multi-shot more than the 4 secs needed, don't really use dire frenzy effectively, use titan's thunder basically whenever it's off cooldown, don't really know when I'm meant to be using aspect of the wild or whether I should be using beastial wrath in AoE fights. Should I be using murder of crows in AoE fights as well or is it just a waste of focus?

For single target I think I'm doing alright so far (only recently got the legendary boots so not sure how much the kill command cooldown should affect my rotation). Still don't really know when the best time is to be using aspect of the wild but I was basically doing the same as the icy veins guide. My opening sequence is usually something like Murder of crows, beastial wrath, titans thunder, then just kill command, cobra shot, kill command cobra shot etc.

Looking at icy veins guide I think I'm meant to be doing murder of the crows, beastial wrath, dire frenzy, titans thunder, then another dire frenzy straight away, aspect of the wild then normal rotation. After that it's just kill command/cobra shot I guess. While beastiality wrath is in effect should I only be spamming kill command/cobra shot for the quick cooldowns or should I still be using dire frenzy during this time? I use titan thunder when it's off cooldown and dire frenzy whenever it has 2 stacks. I usually just used murder of the crows when it was off cooldown but the guide seems to indicate that I should wait the extra 30 seconds and time it with my next bestial wrath. As for aspect of the wild I usually forget I even have this move and don't use it effectively, do I wait and combined it with bestial wrath? Wait and use it when I'm low on focus? Or use it as soon as it's off cooldown?

Thanks for listening to my rambling and hopefully thanks for your reply.

P.S. It's probably more of a personally choice or situational choice I guess but should I be talenting myself more for AoE for mythics. Example, one with the pack, volley, aspect of the beast?

Hey guys I'm brand new to playing World of Warcraft, is there a good video to help a newbie out? Just go over the basics of the game, show you all the controls and what you do. Look forward to learning the game, and chatting with you guys.
      Thanks a ton,

      Hello all,

Just starting out with Mistweaving again.  My problem is every time I get to a dungeon, I can't seem to keep up healing, if I try to jab too.  Should I just be focusing on my one heal until I get better gear?  Even in lvl 15 dungeons, people die, or I get kicked out for not being able to keep health up.
