Stupid low HPS as Holy, not sure why.

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

So, the title sums it up, but I'll dive into it a little bit.

My HPS is really, really low as holy and I can't seem to figure out why.

Warcraft Logs Link

99% of the time I am raid healing.

I try to keep renew up on everyone. I cast CoH, PoM and Cascade on CD (or to my best attempts). I keep Lightwell active. I try to keep Sanc under the melee since they are usually the only ones grouped up long enough to benefit from it.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to spam harder? Is my raid comp hurting my HPS?

Its completely your raid comp.

That Mythic Kargath Kill has 5 healers out of 19 players so keep that in mind.

You also have a disc priest which additionally hurts your numbers as if people don't take damage, you don't give out healing.

Looking at other pulls and attempts you are pulling less thanthe 2 druids, the disc priest, and the monk. So the others are healing the damage faster than you are. Blanketing renew up isn't as important as keeping renew up on the people who have taken or are about to take damage.

Also, looking at the end of the fight, there are a few viewpoints you can have. If you end the fight with a ton of mana then you were hyper efficient, but if that's the case, will you sacrifice spirit to get more power out of your heals? Or if you end the fight with no mana, is it better to sacrifice healing output to stay in a spot where you feel more comfortable with your mana and to be able to respond to a spike damage?

Given the circumstances, you're doing it right, but your raid group is saturated with heals, so better balance (more dps) would be the way to really get more healing out, otherwise then you're pretty much doing what you can.

Though, Divine Hymn was almost 50% overheal, Cascade at 64%, and CoH at 31%.

A neat tip is that in Serenity Binding heal can refresh renews on 2 targets from what I have seen so that might be useful.

I went and looked at your more recent BRF kills and TheRaidBoss is correct, you are having way too much mana left over after your kills. The 4 or 5 I checked out you ended the fight with 50% mana.  You have Spirit gear everywhere you can get it, consider swapping some of them out for more oomph and less Spirit, Trinkets are tough but if you can pick up one of the INT trinks from BRF it will go a long way for you, no need to carry the Alchy trink at that point with your current setup and playstyle.

As Holy, I generally suggest players gem and enchant for Haste instead of Multistrike, the stat weights I use are from Myllior. Last I checked they had Haste > MS and it is how I gear when Holy.  Another suggestion is to take the Glyph of Renew.  Comparing yours and my kills, your kill time is shorter, you carry less healers, and we have the same percentage and number of Renew Casts but my healing is almost double yours w/ the Glyph. (yes I know iLVL has something to do with it, along with my strait thorougput gear instead of Spirit).

I'd also suggest getting a Weak Aura to remind you to cast Solace. You were under half the amount of available casts on the fights I saw.  Track PI as well, you were spec into it and did not use it at all on some fights and only once on the others.  It provides a nice HPS increase at a lower mana cost, track it with a WA as well until you get comfortable using it early and often.

Last thing, is that even though you took less healers than the logs I compared to, your overhealing was higher (in less SPower).  Make sure your UI is showing the debuffs and threat on your raid members.  Renew covering and hitting in range CoH targets goes a long way in getting more from your spell selection.

I wanted to add a note, TheRaidBoss brought up a good point off this forum.  There have been 2 sheet updates since I last changed my Holy play build and as I try to mention often in Holy threads that my Primary Holy alt no longer raids progression. I do swap my main Disc over to Holy (on main runs) to update encounter guides and the Tip vids.  MS and Haste are the go to stats and I just loaded Myllior's new 6.1 sheet and it still reads Haste > MS by the slimmest of margins.

Thanks for the heads up

Thanks for the tips guys. Its good to know that I'm not doing it completely wrong.

The spirit gear is mainly due to crappy rolls when the gear I want drops and that's all I could get to fill the slots for now.

I'll swap out glyphs. gems, and enchants and see how that helps.

Solace is one spell that I tend to forget to cast, or am facing the wrong direction, out of range, accidentally unselect my target .... other random excuses ... I'll try weakauras to see if that helps remind me to cast it.

My next raid isn't until tomorrow night, so I'll post back afterwards!

Making a macro for solace goes a long way into casting it often too!

Simply something like

/targetenemy

/cast Power Word: Solace

/targetlasttarget

makes it easier to cast while being a solid "Use-me-forget-me" macro (although as holy you're limited to 30-yards range on solace, which is impractical).

Consider trying Mindbender as holy, it's easier to cast on CD, being a longer one, and the mana back is similar if you're not really tight on casting Solace (especially as holy, since your GCDs are tight with Renew/CoH spam). Also, the haste breakpoint comparing Mindbender to Solace is lots easier to hit, especially if you follow Gwenymph's advice of gemming/enchanting towards haste.

Hope this helps!

Well raid tonight went pretty smoothly. I think I did a little better managing solace, but I know I still let it sit on CD a bunch. Mainly because I wasn't too pressed for mana most of the time. I think once I re-gear with the adjusted stat priorities that you guys gave me, I should be able to pump out higher numbers.

I did record one of our kills tonight and am in the process of uploading it to youtube. If you happen to watch it and see any errors that I am making, please let me know.

Once it finishes uploading it can be seen here

Did you or someone in that raid log the fight? To be honest I can't really tell what you're casting most of the time (kinda distracted by all the things shining haha).

Looking at the video, you seem to be doing well on mechanics and keeping your activity up. As for actual numbers, I can't really tell.

Please provide logs if possible. :)

I like what I'm seeing.

[✓] Solid renew use and low overhealing

[✓] Solid CoH use and low overhealing

[✓] PoM used pretty much on CD

[✓] Divine hymn used efficiently with low overhealing

[✓] [✓] [✓] Crazy nice activity and mechanics, one of the lowest in damage taken of your raid

Small things:

  • 24/39 casts of Solace (I'm telling you, try mindbender, it's the bomb)
  • 1/3 casts of Lightwell (big damage fight, Lightwell rocks in this and saves lives!)
  • 1/2 casts of Guardian Spirit (fine by me, more of a panic button imo)

VERY small things

  • 3 casts of Flash Heal, no use of heal or PoH (it's ok to OHSHIT cast a few FHs, but use the Serendipity stacks, makes Heal a crazy nice mana-efficient heal)
  • The disc priest in me frowns at the 1 Power Word: Shield (tongue.png)
  • You used an instant mana pot on the fight, which is fine, but you can try the channeled one, you can channel it in the hands smile.png

Overall, you're on the right track, keep it up! It's all about anticipating damage and putting out the CDs when they're needed.

My mana wasn't ever really hurting, so my casts of Solace weren't really prioritized. I probably should have cast them though since it does help healing throughput since it has that heal attached to it.

  • 1/3 casts of Lightwell (big damage fight, Lightwell rocks in this and saves lives!)

Whoops!

  • 1/2 casts of Guardian Spirit (fine by me, more of a panic button imo)

Yea I save that for the tanks when they are about to die

VERY small things

  • 3 casts of Flash Heal, no use of heal or PoH (it's ok to OHSHIT cast a few FHs, but use the Serendipity stacks, makes Heal a crazy nice mana-efficient heal)

I think i only used flash to heal myself up when i accidentally stood in something .....

  • The disc priest in me frowns at the 1 Power Word: Shield (tongue.png)

PW:S is for the speed boost (mainly when I realize I'm still standing somewhere and about to be obliterated). I know most people say to use feathers for this, but I like to be able to give the speed boost through my heal frames.

  • You used an instant mana pot on the fight, which is fine, but you can try the channeled one, you can channel it in the hands smile.png

I know people have been advocating for channeled mana pots ever since they introduced them into the game. I've personally never used one, ever, and I've been playing various mana using classes since launch. Standing still not doing things just makes me go crazy, especially since I starting healing. I don't even like the fact that my hymn makes me channel cast (even though I love the healing that spell does). I might be a little crazy. tongue.png
