Fire mage, no DPS no problem... oh wait

Recommended Posts

Currently Im ilvl 615 and have run HM a few times. I've played fire spec for years and loved it so I have no plan to swap regardless. The main issue is that I feel bad for my guild because of the lack of DPS that I manage. Many times it is based on a "lucky" rng while the rest of the time I can only increase it because of grouped up mob aoe. The max I've hit in one battle is 19k in a 5+ aoe while I tend to average about 13k. During boss battles if I keep everything up and it doesn't get hectic I average over 10k but if I have to run everywhere and use defensive CDs to not die I drop lower. Fire is very gear dependant so I'm trying to build up my crit and mastery but both are under 500 right now and crafting isn't what it was in earlier content. Multistrike and versitility are terrible but I can't just swap those out either. Im trying to up my gear but in the mean time I'm wondering if there is a better rotation to use than the one listed in IV? Waiting for the pyro! and hotstreak procs takes a significant amount of time and causes a high combustion to be difficult so would it be easier to use the instant pyroblast right away? Does anyone have a good explaination on LB/UM/BW? It seems that Living bomb is good for trash while UM is best in a perfect scenario. As for T7, it seems PC is unusable and kindling is only for aoe with 4-piece bonus. Does anyone know differently. Any other help would be appreciated. I'm just trying to create a (partially) undergeared rotation to help fire be less bad looking. Enemies aren't resistant to our spells like they were in vanilla MC... they just kind of seem like it.

Thank you. I think Ive been following IV too strictly as if it was martial law and I need to adjust talents to fit the battles and my playstyle a bit more. I also haven't gotten back into practicing on dummies the way I used to since I returned a few weeks ago. I've had blazing speed most of the time thinking the burst would help survival and let me dodge quicker to begin casting but I beleieve ice flows would be overall better to learn. Glad to hear that UM is not very good. My dps did seem to drop and LB is by far my favorite so Ill have to compare it's single target damage since it'll be awhile until I hit 685. Also I'm a fan of RoP. Used it while leveling to learn it and I plan for it to be my priority, just need to get better at always standing in it. I do have another question. The guide explained crit enchants(and in the future gems for me) for single target and mastery for cleave fights. In theory this would probably be a good idea but purchasing the gems/enchants and swapping them would be expensive and I'm in a high gear progressive point atm. Would it be better to simply choose one and stick with it until a higher ilvl?

Definitely choose one and stick to it, unless you are a hardcore raider who HAS to min/max damage. You can analyze what is the most of the fights are like in BRF and make the decision based on that. :)

Fire has always been a gear-dependent spec, but in WoD it is not as extreme as it used to be. The damage is a little more dependable now. They added a stacking effect called Enhanced Pyrotechnics which provides a streak protection; every time Fireball fails to crit, it gets a 10% higher chance to crit the next time you cast it. (By the way, the tooltip says it works on Frostfire Bolt, but Fire can no longer use this spell! In place of the old Glyph of Frostfire Bolt, which allowed you to use it in place of Fireball for solo content without DPS loss, there is a Glyph of Ignite which snares all targets affected by your Ignite.)

Even with this equalizer, though, if you have to go 4 Fireballs between every Pyroblast! proc, then you never get the stringing together that allows for a high Ignite and a robust Combustion. If you want to do a lot of damage every time you put your buttons together correctly, play Arcane. Arcane has mountains of burst right now, even as a fresh 100 in greens and blues, and will do it on every pull. Even so, with all raid buffs in place and under the effects of Time Warp, Fire has its moments and can perform well without BiS gear. I don't think it's a bad spec; just that Arcane is maybe slightly overtuned, especially with the way that Supernova interacts with Prismatic Crystal.

Hi, I'm a 8/10m fire mage. While fire is gear-dependant, this expansion in particular has very harsh scaling on item level. Five item levels packs a lot of extra damage when itemized correctly. Your dps for your item level is very appropriate; I recommend that you keep doing heroic dungeons and get your item level to 630 and always try to slip in a daily CM or weekly invasion. I also recommend investing in the 640 version of Sandman's Pouch if you can spare the gold and plan on staying fire.
