Recommended Posts

hey there,

first things first,

armory: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/malganis/Nqrlz/advanced

logs: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/zJW746nApxM8tcgT

my guild and i are currently trying wiping on blackhand hc. after todays raid there was a discussion about tanks dying. can anyone help me finding my mistakes, or is it not a tanking but a healing problem?

thanks in advance!

Without commenting on your performance (don't know much about prot warriors). It seems like your pala tank has really low uptime on his defensives - 51% uptime on sacred shield and 31% uptime on SotR.

On another note your raids dps seems really low overall, see some people around 21k and 25k dps. On hc BH you should not see anyone below 30k and people should rather lie around 40k (i'm doing 40k+ on my 678 hunter).

And how are you handling sieges/marks in P2? you should hit the siege with 2 marks, then all ranged switch to the siege and damage it to 40% before the next marks which should kill it. Then every 3rd set of marks should be soaked by the tank (both marked people stack up and tank stand in between)

As far is a can see your wipes are NOT a tank issue, at least not only your fault. all tho you died at 1:35 to molten slag which shouldn't have happen. Try to stack melee behind boss in P1 and turn BH towards the middle before he smashes so you don't hit the lava.

besides me dying there are several other issues, but i have not played a dps in wod, so i cannot really tell… but good to know, p2 seems endless (and a bit boring as a tank).

in p2 some of our raiders have problems to position theirselfs behind the sieges — but i again i can't tell why. i'm always try to position blackhand properly.

thanks for your feedbank – it's kind of a relief to know, that it is not entirly my fault ;).

Oh! Thank you. Like I said, I'm forgetful. I'll try to get to these tomorrow since today is locked out from now until bed time. Sorry for the delay and thanks for the reminder.

The thing I immediately saw is that you're getting trashed by your 2nd Shattering Smash.

I suppose you're using SWall for 1st one, so try to save demo shout + full SBarrier for 2nd one. If it would be not enough, ask your pallies for Sac.

Also, there are multiple deaths across the tries when you were Impaled and then killed by melee.

If you're killing the machine after 2nd marks and using tanks to soak the 3rd ones, the soaking tank should not be tanking the boss. Get into the boss model and ask pallies for BoP to avoid knockback and initial damage, then use full SBarriers to diminish some bleed damage. Also, 2nd tank should immediately jump down from balcon to take boss back after smash, tanking with 2 bleeds is brutal.

Hooray, I have time and WCL is working at the same time.

Okay, starting with pull #29:

Your CD usage mostly looks okay, but I do notice that you have no Last Stand uses at all. You also have 5 Bloodbath/Dragon Roar combos but only 3 Ravagers. Are you not syncing those?

Looking at your active mitigation and comparing that to the graph of your melee damage taken, I can see that you're mostly covering the times when you have the boss. However, I've noticed that it takes you quite a while before you use your first Shield Block after you get aggro and you also have some oddly large gaps in coverage here and there. Since you're going over 30s between times when you're tanking, I'd expect to see at least 18s blocks of Shield Block every time you get the boss. In several cases I don't see this.

Additionally, your use of Shield Barrier is nearly non-existent. At an absolute minimum, I'd expect a full Shield Barrier up for every Shattering Smash, which you took 3 of. Over the fight, you had only 2 uses of Shield Barrier. On top of that, you took an Impale near the end. You'd want to have a Shield Barrier up for the initial hit then cover yourself with additional Shield Barriers as much as possible to soak the DoT. If you're tanking the boss, you'll want to keep a solid Shield Block rotation up and use any extra rage for Shield Barrier.

As for your first death, unless you're being very careful about ensuring that you're never getting hit by the demolition swirls, then you're very likely to need to keep yourself covered in Shield Barriers. During Demolition, your healers are occupied. You need to do what you can to be self-sufficient. That's tough on a warrior. Due to the unacceptable weakness of Shield Barrier, giving your healers even a few seconds of breathing room is challenging. Thus, you need to be very vigilant to not take extra damage, which means you need to move out of the swirls as much as possible and keep Shield Barriers up. This is where you'll likely need to use Enraged Regen.

For your damage, you had 15 Sudden Death procs, but only 10 Execute uses.

You have a negligible amount of rage waste, but you do have 26 Heroic Strikes, compared to 3 Ultimatum procs. Which means that out of the 1760 total rage you gained, you spent 690 of it on damage. You need to be spending more rage on intelligent use of your active mitigation.

Overall, I'm seeing the same patterns across your attempts. Shield Barrier is weak, but it is still an important tool. Your CD usage looks okay, but you need to give Enraged Regen and Last Stand some more attention. Lastly, make use of the external CDs your group has. You can have Hand of Sacrifice from your cotank, your Ret pally, and your Holy pally. Ironbark from your resto druid. Life Cocoon from your mistweaver.

The important thing to remember about prot warriors right now is that we are pathetically, hopelessly weak. We need all of the help we can get, which means you need to use Shield Barrier and you need to make use of your externals. Through some fluke or through pure stubbornness, the developers are under the entirely erroneous impression that warriors are strong, which means this will not likely get better (at least in this expac), so we need to get used to calling for external CDs in every fight and we need to be at least twice as good mechanically at the next person. Even then, we'll be weak, squishy, and spiky, but with due diligence, we can struggle through.
