Dis the useless or collect everything

Recommended Posts

I'm struggling with a dilemma, my usual magpie instincts have kicked in and I'm sorely tempted to attempt to collect every card (not golden versions though), but equally sense is arguing that most of them will never get used so what's the point. The argument between the two sides is bothering me enough to ask you lot what you think, so thoughts?

I believe it's counterproductive to disenchant cards unless you have multiple copies. Perhaps there are a few truly terrible cards you will never use, and it's probably okay to disenchant those cards to help you collect the better cards sooner (you will likely end up getting those cards again anyway as you continue to open packs). However, many of the cards in Hearthstone aren't bad, they are merely situational. As such, you may find a good use for them later even if you don't have a good use for them now. You never want to craft a card that you had previously disenchanted as that's obviously a terrible return on your gold. So my suggestion is that you be patient and disenchant cards only if you have multiple copies.

This is a long-term approach, but if you end up playing Hearthstone for a long time you won't regret it.

What if one of my top-tier decks require a certain legendary? I would have to craft it or else it would take forever for me to pull it from a pack. Even things like rares need to be crafted because you can't count on a certain rare being pulled either.

I'm relatively new to Hearthstone, so take this with a grain of salt I guess lol. What I did, after following the beginner guide, was browse through the deck lists and found one that was cheap, had Legend potential, and fit my play style. When I found it, I started disenchanting extras before tapping into others I wouldn't use. While I'm more inclined to collect all cards, I'm really happy with this decision because I was more than ready to start playing ranked mode, and now have a deck that can succeed very, very well.

Granted, up until then, I followed the beginner guide to a T, played a ton of Arena, and purchased BrM and Naxx, so making a cheap deck was even cheaper and I had more than enough cards to get the deck I wanted.

Hope this helps in some way!

I'm not suggesting that you craft nothing. You will earn dust as you play in Arena and disenchant multiple copies, so you will eventually have enough dust to craft the legendary you want (or epic, or rare, etc.) If you never disenchant cards unless you have more than 2 copies you will eventually have 2 copies of most of the commons, and even the rares, which means every pack you open generally translates to a decent amount of dust.

This is the practice I follow. It takes a lot of patience, but it's more efficient in the long run. Plus if you decide you want to try a different deck you will likely have most of the cards already (cards that a less patient player may have disenchanted).

What if I do some research so I can find out and disenchant all the cards that suck or are simply not run in decks? Like I run hybrid hunter and I don't run snake trap but I pulled one and it used to be competitive but now it's too situational of a card so I don't know if I should keep it or not, since I already have a competitive hunter deck and am not planning on making another hunter deck running snake trap.

Snake Trap is IMHO at least somewhat playable. Imagine you want to use it later on and will have to craft it again. Won't you get super mad about that?

I admit that my strategy of never disenchanting cards unless I have multiple copies isn't for everyone. There are many other strategies you could follow. For example, many people focus on only one or two classes and will turn any other class-specific cards to dust right away. Once they collect all the desired cards for those classes they'll choose others. This method is preferred if you want to see quicker results and feel like you're making progress.

You could also try to determine which cards you will likely never use (or at least not use anytime soon), disenchant them, and craft other cards you want right away. This will help you in the short term as you will be able to play with those select few decks quickly. In the long term, however, you will likely want to play with different decks that require cards you previously disenchanted. This means spending more dust overall, which in turn means it will take you longer overall. But this may not matter to everyone.

My personal goal is to increase my overall card collection as quickly as possible and thus allow myself to play with a large variety of decks, so disenchanting anything would be counterproductive. My method isn't necessarily superior, but it fits my mentality and is in line with my individual goals. In the interim I may not have all the cards I want for each of my decks, but I have still been able to create some decent decks that can compete with others on the ladder. If I don't yet have all the cards in a certain deck list, then I improvise with what I do have.
