Prot evaluation (mainly low dps)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I am semi new to tanking and deciphering logs and I could really use some advice. My dps is obnoxiously low and I can't seen to figure out why. I know I should be focusing on my survivability mainly but when comparing myself to other warriors I cast roughly the same number of each spell (both damage and mitigation) but mine seem to only hit half as hard. I will include some logs and my armory. Please feel free to give me constructive criticism on what I am questioning as well as anywhere you see I could improve. Thanks in advance guys!

One thing I see. You should be going with Crit chants on rings and neck. Crit = parry which equals more Revenge hits and more dmg. And those terribad trinks need to replaced asap.

I'm going to let Esta take care of this request more formally but here's my $0.02

  • While your damage output as a tank can help, the DPS factor is never one of my concerns. As far as damage output goes I only concern myself with the fact that I'm hitting the right one if there are multiple targets available. That's the biggest contribution you can make, imo, as a tank doing damage. Your number 1 priority is making sure you're mitigating damage and surviving, obviously, and managing the boss and their mechanic(s): position, facing, taunt switches, debuffs, etc. Let the damage dealers worry about DPS.
  • Critical Strike (as suggested by JueceFlavour) is alright in the low item level of prot gear. Eventually, though, you will want to switch out and maintain Mastery enchants on your gear. A critical strike build can give you great DPS - especially in AoE situations - but your primary role isn't DPS as noted in the first bullet.
  • Bloodbath is your single target talent and Bladestorm is your multiple target talent. (again referencing JueceFlavour's comment.)

I hope these few things help to some degree. As I said, when Esta gets around to it she will post her feedback; she's pretty good about that. Just be patient.

Sorry for the long wait!

I'll start with Iron Reaver and I'll be looking exclusively at Ground phases, since there's not much you can do in Air phases.

You had two minutes of Ground phase with one Bloodbath and two Dragon Roars. Make sure you're syncing your uses of those. I also notice one Demo Shout and Last Stand. You could have fit a Shield Wall in.

You died 1:49 into the Ground Phase. Your Shield Block fell of 7.11 seconds before your death and you used nothing else until you died. Shield Barrier may not be big and beefy like it once was, but it still could have saved you.

I see and Draenic Strength pot in your buffs list. The strength pot gives you 1000 AP. An armor pot would give you 1500 AP and a sizeable boost to survivability. You have 5 Shield Barrier casts with an average size of only 40k. If you're using those to soak the Artillery, make sure you're using it about 5 seconds before it hits to maximize your Barrier size since Resolve falls off quickly.

Your Shield Block uptime looks really low and so I pulled up the graph of your timings to compare to when you are taking melee damage. You were tanking the boss for the first ~15s with no Shield Block. The second time you're tanking, it takes about 7s for you to put up a Shield Block. Same with the third time. The fourth time, you didn't use SBlk at all. The fifth time, you use a Shield Block on time and it covered the whole period of melee damage. The final time, you used no SBlk at all. You should be using your defensive abilities much more.

One critical thing I need to look at to give you solid information is rage use, but you logged without Advance Combat Logging turned on, so I can't see your rage use. If you could turn that on next time, I'd be able to give you a better assessment. Protection warriors are all about rage management.

For a 2 minute phase, you should have about 80 GCDs used. Since you have to run out, I estimate that you lose about 10s worth of useable time every time. You got artillery 3 times. So I'm estimating about 60 GCDs. From your damage done, I see that you used 52 GCDs. My estimate is pretty conservative, so it looks like you may be losing some GCDs.

At this point, I can't give you any solid recommendations. If you had ACL on, I could look at your rage use and tell you if you could have put more rage into damage or not.

My recommendations thus far are to change your talents as has been recommended, focus on having Shield Block up when tanking, and bring me some logs with ACL turned on.

<Fun is for Casuals> is a serious but casual horde guild on US-Hyjal. We are serious about raiding without the intense hours. Even when recruitment status is none, we will accept exceptional applications for all classes.
Our raid times are Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30PM to 8:30PM server (PST) with raid invitations sent out a few minutes prior to that.
We're interested in you if you fit the following criteria:
Raid attendance is essential. We don't want people sitting on the bench but we also want to make sure we're raiding 6 hours per week. We expect you to be available for at least 90% of our raids. Be on time and prepared for raids. This includes flasks and other consumables. Discord is mandatory and a working mic is desired. You're appropriately geared for our current content. Effort and thought have been put into your gear/gem/enchant choices. You wouldn't show up for a job interview looking like a *filtered*, why would you apply to a guild with improper gems or some insane spec? You're up to date with your class. We expect our raiders to perform to the best of their abilities. You have a computer that's not run with hamster power or requires a hand crank. Some encounters are taxing on a computer's resources so if your toon can't even handle Orgrimmar it's not likely to do well with 20+ whelps that need AOE'ing. You may be interested in us because:
<Fun is for Casuals> uses the personal loot system. There is no loot council, or DKP. We won't eat your babies the first time you stand in something you have no business being in. Repeatedly do it and we'll break out the bibs and BBQ sauce. We provide a limited amount of consumables and flasks on hard mode raid nights.  Discord isn't a circus during raids. We're focused on the job at hand and you should be too. We don't want someone to miss a an interrupt because they were distracted by fart jokes. We are not interested in you if you fit the following criteria:
You roll on BoE items then sell them. Unwilling/unable to spend an entire evening on one boss during progression. While this is rare, it can happen. Drama queens. If you have a problem bring it up to E. This is his job. Don't announce it in guild chat or during a raid. Your issue will have nothing to do with 99% of the guild. You are 17 or younger. We try to keep guild and discord chat PG-13 but occasionally a few four letter words appear out of nowhere. Additionally, we don't want someone's mom interrupting their raiding to get homework or the dishes done. Follow the instructions at https://gow.gg/fun-is-for-casuals under the Recruitment tab if you would like to apply.

Welcome Adventurers! The time has come upon us, FINALLY! The moment in Classic WoW history us diehard, loyal WoW nerds have all been waiting for. WRATH CLASSIC! Arthas Did Nothing Wrong (ADNW) has just begun recruiting (For WotLK Classic) hard-core, casual, rp, pvp, pve, raiders, anything you can think of, you are welcomed here. Although our main focus in ADNW will be progressive raiding, 10 and 25 man and pvp content, we look to have someone for just about anything. Currently we are recruiting for our CORE 10M team composed entirely of irl / internet homies. We are in need of just 1 HEALER (Highly prefer a disc priest with a shadow off spec) and another DPS. Preferably lock or Shadow priest. We are looking to fill our B 10m team entirely, so we can pool together for 25 man’s when it comes time to crush 25m. This guild was founded by a group of tight nit friends recently, who have been around since TBC. WOTLK was our turning point in WoW, and we CANNOT wait to get another crack at this and MAKE IT RIGHT. Come join the adventure of a chill environment full of helpful hands and knowledge. Feel free to reach out to me Via Discord: Daevilmonkiexp#9239 OR Bnet: Daevilmonkie#1280 just let me know you are interested in the guild and we can have a convo! ARTHAS DID NOTHING WRONG!

      Hi Team
I am recently returning from a few years away from the game and I have decided to go back to my much loved main throughout wrath, the feral druid. I have always been a cut above the rest and managed to be top dps all through wrath.
I was reading your guide and noticed in the talents you don't take savage roar. Can you explain the match behind this as to me it seems like the more viable option.
