Looking for some advice on how to get more dps, DW frost 704ilvl

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

I am in a raid group that is working on normal Archimonde at the moment.

As part of this , I am looking at improving my dps as its sitting at 40k at the moment which I feel is on the low side for my gear and spec.

Armory http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/player/eu/argent_dawn/shells

Logs

https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/gVhmGt82y3WbAxHj/#type=damage-done&source=2

https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/Q6XtnajpR7YJrBLF#type=damage-done&source=13

https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/frxNdbJ6wB9HFhjT/#type=damage-done&source=15

I know the basic rotation but wonder if I am missing something simple or if I am mashing the Frost Strike too much and then running low on runic power when I get a proc. I am attempting to follow the rotation on the icy veins guide.

Its frustrating enough as I feel that I should be hitting 50k plus. If I compare myself to other random players via ask mr robot they are tipping 50k plus. Could be they know the fight better but I feel my rotation is a bit off.

I know my gear is only alright and could be improved a good bit but the drops havent been friendly recently. Must look at a crafted cloak and maybe some mythic boots and belt.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I haven't had a proper look at the logs, but did see some pretty easy to address things that will all play a part - the first thing to fix is your glyphs - compare them to the ones I was using for archimonde as a guide:

http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/combatlog/6a9cedb3-a55a-42b4-b472-ba0ffd7c694d/compare/27#c=3,cl=267aaa16-f15b-454d-90bb-da3c415a2155,cf=170,cp=18,cb=damage-total,cc=use

Gear does play a part - while the drops may not have been great, you can make sure that you have always fully valor-upgraded your gear and applied the correct enchants (I notice your cloak is enchanted with haste which is not what you want as a DW frost dk - always stack mastery).

You're also going to be handicapped a little by your trinkets - the vial is fantastic for unholy DKs, not so much for frost - as much as possible try to get something nearer the top of this list:

https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/frost-death-knight-pve-dps-gear-loot-best-in-slot

Also always make sure to pre-pot before pull, and for archimonde in particular you can stack runic power by AMS'ing in the green pool just before pull, which can help get the most out of the ring / prepot. Also always make sure to eat some sleeper sushi and pop a rune (every little helps!)

I'll try to have a look through the logs in more detail, but the above as a start should help get the most out of your current setup, which may up your DPS somewhat.

I was chewing over some figures last night and wondering if it would be worth trying unholy with necroblight.

Not sure if its still viable these days. Think it is.

I have a decent i700 2h just waiting to be upgraded and both specs share mastery.

That is a good tip on the cloak, I will change it later and the glyphs too.

At a quick glance, i would say too many obliterates. Especially as you get more and more mastery, obliterate becomes something you press because you have to burn some unholy runes, not something you want to press :)

Nothing wrong with necroblight, in mythic it's the better dps choice on some fights. It does have a slower wind up period, which can cause it to lose out on fast fights or low hp adds. Unholy with breath ties better with ring (and vial of convulsive shadows).

I am currently progressing in Mythic as a DW Frost/Unholy DK. I recommend that you wait to go Unholy until you get the Heroic 2H off Fel Lord Zakuun. Necroblight playstyle is AMAZING for some fights and bad for others, I find myself switching trinkets and specs often in raids. The Heirloom trinket from Mythic Dungeons is a must-have for demon bosses such as Archimonde, Manno, the imps on Xhul'horac, Fel Lord Zakuun, etc. It increases your strength and your damage done against Demons by 10% pair that with your Pillar of Frost, Draenic Strength Potion and Legendary ring and you can get amazing DPS. Depending on how much moving/rezzing I have to do in the fight I can usually pull a nice steady 85-90k on Heroic Archimonde up until the last phase where I drop to 70k as an Unholy, keep in mind that is with full Heroic Geared. I can burst 140-150k at the start of the fight and gradually drop to a steady 70k and remain there throughout the fight with DW Frost.

Just stay Frost for now, get all the trinkets from HFC including the one off Archi, get the Heroic 2H off Zakuun and then start working on Unholy.

Thanks folks for the input.

I will try to implement the advice where I can and will keep hunting for gear upgrades. The loot gods have to give in eventually. (or not as happens).

I am looking forward to Unholy, it looks like a good laugh.

Thanks

hello shells,

i've looked at your armory and logs and i think i can help you improve on some things wich will improve your dps.

Let's first talk about your talents. i looked at some of your recent logs( because those are after you got the advice from the other people in here wink.png. I would advice you to change your tier 4 talent from blood tap to runic corruption. it's a very viable option and allows you to concentrate more on pushing the right button's on the right time.

also as a lvl 100 talent the talent you wanna choose is defile on basicly every pull. necrotic plaque is fun but not really as good as the AOE burst potential of defile, and defile also does more single target dps. this is espaccially true once you get the empty drinking horn trinket from mannoroth, wich brings us to the next point, gearing.

you do have some nice gear but it's really important that you try to pick up the setbonus of HFC, especcially the 4-piece bonus. this setbonus alone can increase your dps by 10 to 15 percent if used correctly. also tthe empty drinking horn is something to really hunt for because this basicly does like 10 percent extra damage again.

now finally, lets talk about your rotation, i've seen that you're allready following up the advice of javiere, witch is to use less obliterates in favor of more howling blasts. there are however some things you can still improve on to optimize your damage potential. I see that the crit% of your frost strikes is usually about 60% or lower, witch means that you could make more use of killing machine. you should always save up your runic power for the moment when killing machine procs to instantly use them on frost strike. I usually pool runic power to about 80/85 before i start dumping RP, (because you obviously dont want to cap on RP) and only tthen will i use an unproc'd frost strike. do understand that he 4piece setbonus helps out a lot wih this since you can have these huge bursts of frost strikes.

I hope this helps you and wish you goodluckk in improving that dps ;P

greets,

hotas

Thanks for those tips Hotass.

I am really feeling the RNG when it comes to loot the last while as I have yet to get my hands on more than 1 tier piece and havent gotten any nice trinkets so far.

I do tend to use FS without the KM proc which would explain the crit% as you said.

My dps has gone up by 4k ish since the advice in here, which is awesome!

I tried Deflie but I found that the bosses keep getting kited out of it due to raid mechanics or where fire lands on the floor. I will look at it again as it does hit hard alright.

Runic corruption is a good tip alright and I will do that tonight.

Cheers man, appreciate the advice.

Its been a good 4 months since I came back after my break and I am enjoying the game alot and raiding again too :)

Hi

Sorry to reopen my thread but I was looking for some more advice.

I tried out UH last night with BoS on normal Archie with my current gear. Raid buffed sitting at 26% mulit. Not quite optimal but with the normal Vial I thought I would give it a lash.

It was a bit underwhelming, probably down to gear and inexperience. Had practiced rotation on combat dummy but its not the same.

I stayed UH and went to necroblight but didnt add in the correct tier 1 talent to make it optimal.

Given my current gear, armory http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/player/eu/argent_dawn/shells

is it worth plugging away with BoS or stick to necroblight (with the correct talents and gear enchanted for multi) or is it worth going back to DW frost and rechanting/regemming for mastery until I complete the Tier set. Trinkets wise, I have most of them on normal so fair bit of choice and was switching them out for fights.

Thanks for the feedback in advance.

Your unbuffed multistrike is too low for BOS. You want 30% unbuffed. After that you just have to get down the rotation proper. BOS is basically just an exploit of BOS and how the ring works (vial just further makes that stronger). So, the key is to have BOS up the entire duration of the ring. By far the easiest way to do this is to be the ring popper for your group. If not, just ask the ring popper to wait 5-6 GCDs so you can get everything up to do BOS proper.

also archi is just a really rough fight to start practicing BOS on XD.

In addition tier isn't really needed for BOS. At higher gear levels people break tier in favor  of higher multistrike pieces so that's not necessarily a requirement you should look for. Having normal vial is a great place to be. Just get your unbuffed multistrike up a bit more and practice in LFR. Once you get it down you'll fall in love with it.

also another thing is your group will sorta determine your overall dps using bos. The logs you see of people pulling hundreds of thousands of k dps are on mythic fights that are lasting 47 seconds. If you group isn't melting bosses you will have your giant bos burst but your dps will start to plummet quickly. So even if you are seeing say 70k dps total using  BOS it doesn't necessarily mean you are doing it wrong, it just means you can't pad meters and charts XD

Cheers Demon, its kinda what I thought alright.

Think I will stick with it for the moment rather than trying necroblight and then when I have the gear having to learn how to BoS again.

Id be happy with 70k dps for fights, with DW frost im getting 50k atm and I would like to feel like Im pulling my weight more in the group.  (I am my own hardest critic)

believe me I know those feels, moving around progression guilds there is pressure to pull dem leet deeps or get kicked. Do keep in mind gear scaling and dks are sorta lower tier after the frost nerf to oblivion 3 days after 6.2 launched. bos unholy is closer to middle of the pack but thats mostly because of ring exploit.

frost can pull very competitive numbers and my mythic group has 2 frost dks pulling very good numbers. you just need the right gear and all it takes is that one trinket or that one tier piece and boom you are now pulling insane dps (at least till next xpac when tier bonuses aren't going to have as huge increases as they used to). so enjoy hawling blasting everything you for now and when you feel like giving bos another go, we are always here to help out :D

plus there is still forever until legion >_>

plus plus depending on gear scaling frost may use BOS in legion, so we can never escape from it now XD

Cheers Demonardvark.

I went back to DW frost last night and the difference in being relaxed and used to the rotation really showed. I went from 38k in suboptimal UH (due to inexperience with rotation and sub optimal gear and mulit) to over 60k in the spec I was better prepared in.

As you said lots more time till legion hits.

:)
