wow Update from Nostalrius on Legacy Servers!

4 posts in this topic

20538-update-from-nostalrius-on-legacy-s

The team behind Nostalrius promised an update this weekend and they have delivered! Don't get too excited though, it might not be what you expected!

After a tweet from the team a few days ago, much of the pro-legacy community were pretty excited about this weekend!

After such a tantalising tweet, we were all on the edge of our seats as the weekend progressed and more hints were dropped. Unfortunately, I don't think any of us expected what happened next. While it is still an interesting concept, this definitely wasn't the "YAY LEGACY IS COMING" announcement many were hoping for. Read the post below and let us know what you think!

Dear community,

The last few weeks have been full of exciting events that we did not anticipate. We saw the first official answer from J. Allen Brack on the topic of legacy servers, the petition reached 250.000 signatures, and we are currently scheduling a meeting at Blizzard campus!

We are very excited to be able to help Blizzard understand the part of their community asking for legacy servers and many other related topics, in the hope that they will eventually make it possible to legally play previous game expansions.

Since these events are major changes regarding the legacy server scene, completely changing our former strategy, we have several announcements today:

A. Ambassadors of Legacy servers

After the answer from Blizzard and the amazing support we received, we feel we are now not only the admins of a private server: We are also the ambassadors of a larger movement for the entire World of Warcraft community that wants to see game history restored. It is a major responsibility. Our top-priority and only focus now is to fulfill the needs of this community, by carrying your voice to Blizzard directly.

B. Nostalrius source code and database won’t be released

We acknowledge the help that the emulation community provided to us by creating MaNGOS and our initial objective was to release part of these sources to help improve the current emulators - without our special anti-cheat and some other critical features.

Our custom anticheat had unique functionalities that allowed us to detect and track any kind of hack / bot in a generic way. We believe the anticheat that we made was able to detect and was able to block all of the known threats, and releasing our code would allow the development of more powerful cheating tools that would be more difficult, if not impossible, to detect. We have spent countless hours to fight people making money from exploits, cheats and traffics: the last thing we want to see now is people getting more money from wow hacks because of us.

Some voices in the emulation scene wanted to legally force us to release the complete source code if we chose to only publish a part of it. As explained above, the anticheat is not something we would reveal in any case.

A second important point is that keeping the sources private could be useful at some point during the discussion with Blizzard. They proposed to discuss together and we want to have all the chances on our side, for the community we represent now.

Furthermore, if official legacy servers were to be released at some point in the future, the emulation would become, in essence, obsolete.

C. A special gift for you

On a side note, the development team has prepared a gift for you. One of the hidden Nostalrius features was the ability to "replay" sequences of the game. This is something that was mainly used to create our videos, but never released to players. We accumulated a few replays of different events that occurred on our PvP and PvE servers, and we are willing to let you replay these magic moments. We are glad to inform you that Nostalrius team is releasing the first "replay" feature for World of Warcraft, and will be available to anyone: a powerful tool for future e-sport event maybe ?

The source code is available here (based on BunnyEmu, credit to their developers) :

https://github.com/NostalriusVanilla/NostalriusMemories

You can download the package with replays here:

https://mega.nz/…

Requirements (Won’t be provided) :

World of Warcraft original 1.12.1 client
Optional: WDB item cache filled (or you will see players naked)

We hope you will enjoy these replays that we are introducing here and you will be able to carry these wonderful Nostalrius memories for ever with you.

D. Community feedback and thoughts

We will need the help and feedback of the whole World of Warcraft community to carry all their voices, and make the meeting with Blizzard a success. More information will be available on an announcement next week.

Please, stay tuned!

Best regards,
Nostalrius Team.

When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this ... you haven't.

Hello all,

I am writing a bachelor tesis focused on the HYPOTHETICAL implementation of an official Vanilla Service, with a monetization through an already-existing in-game store, and the follow-up marketing campaign.

Any kind of feedback is accepted, and the completion of the survey would greatly improve my thesis.

Again, thank you all for your time,

F.

To clarify on the 18 seconds thing: The changes to Insanity drain are obviously an overall nerf to Surrender to Madness. That's intentional. We just disagree that it is proportionately more of a problem for lower-skilled players. If you weren't pushing Surrender past 100 stacks already anyway, the difference for you won't be as substantial. If anything, those players are likely to see an increase in duration of their non-Surrender Voidforms.

That said, there's obviously a lot changing for Shadow in 7.1.5, and once things stabilize, we intend to take another look at the rate of Insanity drain to make sure things end up where they should be.

Couple other notes for you: We're planning to increase Void Bolt's DoT extension to 3 seconds, up from 2. We're also increasing Shadow's damage across the board in the next build. (Source)

As you may know, one of the artifact appearance recolors is locked behind the final Legion archaeology achievement, This Side Up, which takes 16 weeks to finish and until yesterday it was not account-wide. As players finally unlocked the achievement and then went to alts to make use of it there as well, you can imagine the less-than-great revelation provoking quite an outcry.
But luckily, within a day of complaints over it reaching reddit's frontpage a fix has appeared and the artifact appearance is now indeed account-wide! Hopefully when we finally finish Improving on History aka Balance of Power that appearance will also be available for alts.
Thanks to Feywhelps for noticing, both when it wasn't and was working!

Location: Horde – US Connected Realms: The Venture Co - Maelstrom - Lightninghoof
      About us:
Converge has been around since WoW Vanilla and has been raiding together since Molten Core; most of our members have been playing together for years. In its older days, when most of us where young, we were more raid focused and demanded a lot from our members. Over the years we had to adjust our playtime and priorities with a growing list of RL responsibilities and are now, for all intents and purposes, a semi-casual raiding guild.
At this point in time we are trying to round out our roster and eventually attempt Mythic raids once we feel comfortable with our raid composition.
      Raid Times: 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM Eastern Time – Monday/Tuesday.
Recruitment: Currently we are only accepting Ranged DPS.
      Legion Progression:
      [EN]    7/7 Normal - 7/7 Heroic
      [ToV]  3/3 Normal - 1/3 Heroic

Trial of Valor Odyn fix, Guarm Mythic tuning and Helya nerfs and fixes are the headlines for this batch of hotfixes, along with the usual class and quest fixes.
      December 6
      Class
      Demon Hunter
Fixed a bug that sometimes allowed the leech from Soul Rending to persist after Metamorphosis ended. Hunter
Freezing Trap will no longer cause the target's next cast to fail in certain cases. Mage
Ice Block's cooldown will correctly reset at the end of an encounter. Priest
You can now activate and deactivate Shadowform while mounted.
      Class Halls
Players who were unable to submit Artifact Knowledge Work Orders should now be able to again.
      Dungeons and Raids
Players in a dungeon during a server shutdown should no longer receive the Deserter debuff. Throne of Tides
Fixed a bug that was causing Mindbender Ghur’sha to be non-interactable. Trial of Valor
The Patient Zero achievement should now be obtainable, as intended. Guarm
Increased the radius of Guarm's Multi-Headed from 8 yards to 30 yards on Mythic difficulty. Decreased Guarm's health by 5% on Mythic difficulty. Developers’ Notes: The Mythic difficulty change to the Multi-Headed mechanic is intended to require the use of 2 tanks on the encounter. We also slightly reduced Guarm’s health alongside this change in order to minimize the effect on groups that were accustomed to only using 1 tank. This is already active in the NA/ANZ region, and will take effect in other regions with their weekly restarts.
      Helya
The magnitude of Corrupted Axion's healing absorb now properly scales down as the size of a raid decreases from 30 players to 10 players. Resolved an issue that would cause Fetid Rot from targeting more players than intended on non-Mythic difficulties. Reduced the health of several enemies in the Helya encounter on Normal and Heroic difficulties. On non-Mythic difficulties, Adjusted Orb of Corrosion no longer targets Helya's tank targets, similar to its behavior in Mythic difficulty. Odyn
Fixed an issue that could cause Odyn to sometimes cast a lethal Unerring Blast during the final phase of the encounter.
      Items
Many trinkets available from Timewalking holiday dungeons and vendors have had their effects adjusted to more closely match the power level of Legion trinkets.
      Player versus Player
Mass Invisibility can no longer be cast on allies holding battleground flags and orbs.
      Quests
Havi's message when a player completes "Now That's Just Clawful" will no longer be displayed to all players in the area. World Quest map markers for Kirin Tor World Quests should now function correctly. During “Barrels o’ Fun”, a swirling holy light now radiates from the barrel that needs to be tracked. Players no longer get roadblocked if they teleport out of Well of the Forgotten after interacting with the Bone Pile for the quest "The Rite of the Executioner". Previous Hotfixes.
