Working spreadsheet for hero counters in Overwatch

15 posts in this topic

Posted (edited)

I recently put together a working spreadsheet to help lay out hero counters to help anyone playing Overwatch/wanting to play Overwatch. I will be continuing to edit and improve this spreadsheet going into the Launch of the game; so if you see something you disagree with, a mistake, or think I missed something please let me know! I hope to have this ironed out before launch!

Edit: Forgot Overwatch in title, forgive my brain!

Hey, this is pretty cool.

Here are some observations, if you think they're worth anything, you could update the spreadsheet.

Symmetra's orbs counter Bastion, so a soft counter I guess.

Roadhog does pretty well against Zenyatta, so I suppose another soft counter ("just" the hook combo).

I'm not sure about Soldier countering McCree, and I think you could definitely make the case that McCree counters (read: owns) Soldier in close range. I guess it all has to do with the range, but in any case, I think McCree could show up as a counter to Soldier.

I've had great success against Torbjorns of all shapes and sizes as both Reaper and Soldier. Reaper up close can wreck the turret (provided he's full health and doesn't miss), and Soldier's Helix Rockets/controlled bursts also do well against it from range.

That's it smile.png

+1 to this. It's a range battle, which directly impacts who wins.

I'd put Winston as a hard counter to Symmetra - I would say he is definitely more of a hard counter than some of the others listed.

I disagree with Mei being listed as a hard counter to McCree. While her ice wall can be great vs. his ult, he will always flash bang and kill Mei before she can freeze him. I'd perhaps suggest Genji, since he can reflect everything of McCree's, as well as avoid close-quarters combat incredibly well.

I really like the idea about Soldier being at least a Soft counter to Torb. I hadnt thought about that, between Helix rockets and his 100% accuracy to poke down the turret. Plus his healing allows him to do it without to much risk. I definitely wanna add this. As for reaper, I think he should just be a soft counter because he does have to get up close and "risk" a little bit to make the plays.

Symmetra is an interesting one since she does 100 damage. I am just not sure if that enough qualifies as a soft counter when so many people already do. Thats one area im kinda stuck on for this sheet is, should I have every possible soft or hard counter, or should only prioritize those that really shine.

The reason Zenyatta is a soft counter to Roadhog is because of his Orb. However I think maybe it should be a case of double soft counter. Both have counter play, both help their team against each other, but not sure how you think it should work when Zenyatta is picked as a tank shredder.

Lastly I was thinking a long time about it last night, soldier and McCree, and I feel like McCree seriously lacks counters right now, or at least I dont see them. So I wanted to get someone in that column for people to work with.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I will be watching!

That's perfect! Bookmarked it for when it goes live, I wish I'd seen this during the beta.

I think all over blizzard did a brilliand job at balancing the heroes.

However the only hero that seems a bit overpowered in my opinion is Bastion.

Even a Tank can be shoot down in 1-2 secs.

I played most of the time as Roadhog, McGree and Pharra.

But my favorite seems to be Roadhog, I can't name a single hero thats a counter to Roadhog and I can't name a single hero which is super easy for Roadhog.

So in my opinion there is no real "rock, paper 'n scissors" in Overwatch, which is pretty good!

But don't mind, keep up your work. It's a pretty good idea.

Bastion is, unfortunately, just one of those heroes that requires teamwork to kill. In competitive play, you can co-ordinate to take him down. In public games, people just run at him and keep feeding him more kills, since they just get angry and don't stop and think.

You might be right on Bastion.

I couldn't really play competitive, 'cause non of my friends/guildies played the open beta.

There are ways to defeat him even as a single player, but in most cases he is far behind (like a sniper) but shooting with a minigun with high damage.

What I mean when I said I feel like Bastion is the only unbalanced class:

There is no recoil and the minigun really hits where your crosshair is located, even if it is like 300 meters away. There should be more spraying with the minigun. Its to accurat.

We will see more in the near future.

Maybe some of us will meet up together in a match.

@DejaWuWe're in the process of getting all of our guides reviewed by pro players. I suggest you go through them again tomorrow. Many of the reviewers have given us stuff regarding synergies and counters :)

I definitely will! I would love to help in that regard! :D

Update: Grid view finished by Trizzit, and version 2.0 is live for launch. I will not be updating this more for a day or two for consistency reasons. I hope after this weekend, and a few pro matches/discussions with them I can refine it closer to version 3.0

Overwatch is about to experience its very first Christmas next week and some primary info on the event has already surfaced.
The Christmas Spirit will grace the world of Overwatch with its presence next Tuesday the 13th of December, as it was confirmed earlier today on Twitter.
Placeholder for tweet 806196531795673088 French site JudgeHype has done some digging and has datamined some first details on this upcoming event. First of all, there will be a special Christmas-themed weekly Brawl, while one to three maps will probably feature festive decorations. All heroes will receive a new emote, spray and voice line, as well as one or two skins, emotes and highlight intros. Lastly, Torbjorn is probably getting a Santa skin, along with a respective emote and highlight intro.
Hopefully we will know more about the even soon! Are you looking forward to it?

The third season of Overwatch competitive play has gone live and brought with it some changes in they way skill rating is calculated, and there was also a smaller patch with just bug fixes deployed earlier today. You can check out both below:
      Blizzard
      BUG FIXES:
      Arcade
Fixed a bug that prevented Ana from being selected in 1v1 matches
      Heroes
Fixed a bug that allowed Mercy to receive Ultimate charge when using her Cadueus Staff to increase teammates’ damage when they’re not damaging enemies Fixed a bug preventing Reinhardt from deactivating his Barrier Field after being hacked by Sombra Fixed a bug preventing Sombra’s Hack from cancelling Soldier: 76’s Sprint ability Sombra no longer receives credit toward her on-fire meter when her EMP ultimate hits Symmetra’s turrets When multiple Sombras attempt to hack a health pack, the player that initialized the hack first will now control it Fixed a bug preventing Sombra from seeing practice bots, whose health has fallen below 50%, through the walls on the Practice Range Fixed a bug preventing Sombra’s reticle from consistently expanding while firing her machine pistol

Season 3 has begun! Before you crack your knuckles and kick off your placement matches, here’s a quick overview of what's new in Competitive Play.

If you’re an avid player, you undoubtedly noticed that Competitive Play wasn’t completely disabled when Season 2 ended last week. Instead, it was replaced with an Off-Season mode, which allows you to continue using the Competitive Play ruleset without your skill rating being affected.

This gives everyone the freedom to break away from the meta and experiment with new hero combinations and strategies without having to worry about being moved to a lower tier. Players in the Diamond, Master, and Grandmaster tiers can also take a week-long breather and avoid any skill rating decay.
We’re expecting each off-season to last about seven days, after which everyone will need to complete their placement matches for the new season.

After giving the Skill Rating system a major overhaul in Season 2, we noticed both the Gold and Platinum tiers were significantly overpopulated. This meant that some players were initially achieving inappropriately high skill ratings and then experiencing a downward adjustment within the first few matches of the season. This also meant that competition within the Gold and Platinum tiers could vary widely from match to match.

To address these issues, we’ve made some slight adjustments to the Skill Rating system—and, as a result, skill ratings will be more widely distributed across all tiers for Season 3. Many players will be ranked lower than expected after their Season 3 placement matches; however, this should normalize as the season progresses.

Now that you're up to speed on the latest changes to Competitive Play, it’s time to put your skills to the test! Season 3 is live right now on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for a steady stream of Overwatch information, and we’ll see you on the battlefield.

The developer update video goes into how Symmetra will be the first OW Hero to have 2 ultimates and also talks more changes coming to her on the PTR soon.

It's time for Game Director Jeff Kaplan to discuss the very long awaited Symmetra changes, coming to the PTR soon. He talks about how situational she currently is, the long amount of time she needs to set up and more.
But the headline is that she'll be the first OW Hero to have 2 ultimates to choose from at all times. You'll be able to toggle between the current teleporter and a shield generator that puts a substantial shield on all team mates in a large radius, ignoring line of sight. Check out the full video for a more in-depth description as well as other Symmterish topics:

This one goes straight into the rumor department, but there's a fair amount of evidence and common sense backing it up: Blizzard have posted two jobs in the "unannounced games/projects" section, working on a first person engine.
This one goes straight into the rumor department, but there's a fair amount of evidence and common sense backing it up: Blizzard have posted two jobs in the "unannounced games/projects" section, working on a first person engine. They have also recently cancelled a large graphic novel that was going to go into the backstory and founding of the Overwatch organization, saying that the story has changed since its inception. The other reason behind it might be because they want to tell that story in an actual separate game, using the Overwatch engine. With the main game being so popular, having so many well liked/loved characters and the animated shorts adding more and more backstory and character to the Heroes, it seems Blizzard may have decided to go full out and make a whole single player experience around it.
Now, usually these job listings will at least mention the franchise they're related to, even for an unannounced project, so this could still be related to a new IP or even a first person foray into a different franchise (anyone remember Starcraft: Ghost?). In any case, Overwatch seems to be the perfect candidate, especially since Blizzard had already said there will probably be an Overwatch 2.
