hearthstone Invitees for Insomnia 58 Truesilver Championship Decided

1 post in this topic

The seven players who will be invited to Insomnia 58 for the $30,000 Hearthstone Truesilver Championship, alongside champion Ness, were decided through at The Sacred Trial invitational qualifier on June 28-29.

As reported previously, the players were divided into four groups and the winners of each group qualified immediately. The format was best of five Last Hero Standing, with a ban. The group standings were as follows:

Group A:   Ostkaka (4-0),   Eloise (3-1),   Boar Control (2-2),   Lifecoach (0-3),   Ek0p (0-3)

Group B:   Naiman (4-0),   Powder (3-1),   StrifeCro (2-2),   Thijs (2-2),   Orange (0-4)

Group C:   Firebat (3-0),   Xixo (3-1),   Chakki (2-2),   Zalae (1-3),   SuperJJ (0-3)

Group D:   Gaara (3-1),   Dog (3-1),   Hoej (2-2),   Rdu (1-3),   AKA Wonder (1-3)

The matches between Ek0p and Lifecoach, and Firebat and SuperJJ  were not played, as they would have had no bearing on the standings.

The second and third placed players in each group then played a single elimination event to decide the remaining three places. The players who came through with two straight wins were Chakki and Xixo. This left Eloise and Dog to play off for third place, and the final invite.

In the final match, Eloise took a 2-0 lead and looked to be headed to victory. She matched up against Dog's Aggro Shaman with first her Dragon Warrior, and then her Zoo. Surprisingly she lost both games, which set up a Tempo Mage vs Shaman game. This time, she managed to complete her victory, and qualified for the main event. Dog was runner-up at Insomnia 57 and it remains to be seen if he will now travel to enter in August.

Of the twenty players in the qualifying event, all twenty brought Shaman. Eighteen brought Warrior, and eighteen brought Warlock. All of the top twelve players brought all three of those classes.

The VOD of the second day is available here.

Blizzard have been teasing the new expansion again, this time in the form of The Gadgetzan Gazette newspaper.
The first edition to be released was Volume 32 Number 7 and talks about the first unrobbable bank in Gadgetzan. The line "Citizens can see the new building for themselves when the First Bank of Gadgetzan opens to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony next week" is encouraging. Presumably this means we will get a reveal of the new set at BlizzCon.

Volume 37 Number 8 talks about Gadgetzan Port. Other than the ongoing themes of money, trade, and greed, the main point of interest from a Hearthstone point of view is the mention of "Secret dragon people". With lots of Dragon cards rotating out in the new year, it will be encouraging to fans of Dragons that they seem likely to be replenished in Gadgetzan.

Hearthstone esports will be even bigger in 2017. Not only will there be a bigger Championship Tour, but there will be other global events as well.
Due to the success of the 2016 Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT), it is easy to forget that this is only the third year of competitive Hearthstone. Blizzard have been working hard on improving this for 2017, and have recently announced their plans for next year.
The changes to the HCT itself are pretty spectacular. There will be a global Season Championship instead of regional ones, and they will be held at locations that allow spectators, rather than in a closed studio. Season Championships will include 4 players from each region (Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and China). These players will be decided using regional Playoffs (to replace Preliminaries), and they will use the Swiss Tournament format.
The Championships will be synched with Standard. This should mean that the meta is always fresh during the Championship events, and will hopefully reward deckbuilding. Magic: The Gathering uses this format already, and it is something that should greatly benefit Hearthstone viewing. On top of these changes, points and cups have been tidied up, and the prize pool for the year has been set at $2 million.
There will also be Hearthstone Global Games, which is a world team league featuring teams from different countries, and Inn-vitationals, which will include streamers and celebrities in a more light hearted setting.
I think that these changes will make a huge difference to our viewing experience in 2017. What do you think? As always, feel free to comment below.

This week's Tavern Brawl is Captain Blackheart's Treasure. It is the fourth time that this Brawl has been used.
Captain Blackheart's Treasure was most recently used as the  63rd Tavern Brawl, in late August. This week is the 72nd Tavern Brawl, so as you can see, it is a pretty quick repeat. In this Brawl you are given a deck full of Bloodsail Raiders, and each turn are offered a choice of three cards to put into your hand.
As always, I would remind people that I feel this is a more skillful Brawl than it first appears. It teaches a lot about planning ahead, and also tempo in general. Given that players can play this Brawl with no cards of their own, I am a big fan of this Brawl from a design standpoint.
Captain Blackheart's Treasure was originally designed to showcase the Discover mechanic for The League of Explorers. It actually made its debut late however, as it was withdrawn due to technical issues.
