Blizzard on PTR Class Design

Recommended Posts

GSfli6V.jpg

As some players looked at what was happening with Class changes on the 7.1.5 PTR, they panicked and so Blizzard has had to explain their methods and practices on the PTR.

The TLDR of it is basically "calm down, we're just testing stuff, not done yet". But player outrage at specific changes from the PTR has worked to prevent specific changes from happening in the past, so it's a tricky thing to judge. In any case here's the full post:

We’re making some significant changes to many specializations in Patch 7.1.5, and this has understandably resulted in some concern and confusion, particularly from players who may be less familiar with our PTR and development processes. So, we’d like to take a moment to explain what’s going on and how it pertains to what you’re seeing (or haven’t yet seen) on the PTR.

First, it’s important to understand the role that the PTR plays in our overall development process. At this stage, Patch 7.1.5 is still a work in progress. The PTR is only a snapshot of where we happened to be in development at the time the build was created. There are a lot of people working on WoW, and a lot of projects in various stages of completion. As a result, especially at this early stage of the PTR cycle, you’re going to see a lot of incomplete or unfinished work. Quite often, when something you see doesn’t make sense, it’s simply because we hadn’t finished making it make sense before the latest build was created.

Looking specifically at class design, the changes you’re seeing so far are focused primarily on how each spec plays in terms of mechanics, rotations, ability sets, talent options, etc. As some of these changes are fairly significant, we haven’t been making many adjustments to overall performance just yet. We need each spec to be completely functional before we can start tuning its effectiveness.

Right now, the build currently live on the 7.1.5 PTR is only about halfway through those mechanical changes. We’ve been continuing to work hard on getting those finished, and the next build should give you a clearer picture of what’s happening with your spec. We’ll try to share as much insight as we can into what we’re doing at that point.

What were the changes people raged about?

I believe it is due to certain classes being "boring" to play, regardless of whether they are good or bad.

I know there was a lot of stuff about Ele Shamans and I think a few Hunter specs as well.

MM Hunter was one of the biggest, yeah. People were not happy at all.

I know a lot of people are raging about the fire mage changes in particular. The spec has been gutted and is all over the place at the moment.

Yeah, the fact that it was also the "go-to" spec for the whole expansion so far means it affects so many more people than some of the changes.

well, most t of class got nerf... some of the class change playstyle. it is very dangerous for blizz do change playstyle of specific class on the middle of patch. For Rogue, they are nerf them to the ground. there are only 2 class has been buff.. elemental shaman and arm warrior (i think).

It's a similar thing to why people wanted heroes like Ana and Sombra to be restricted from Competitive in Overwatch. Too much change in the middle of the season/patch can cause serious issues for the game.

Executive Producer Holly Longdale teased some upcoming experimental PvE-focused content that Blizzard will soon reveal to the community.
It appears that Plunderstorm isn't the only new mode Blizzard plans to add to WoW this year.
Holly Longdale today teased an upcoming PvE-oriented event that will soon be revealed to us. Holly might be talking about the "Timerunning Pandamonium," expected in Patch 10.2.7.

      Greetings Citizens of Azeroth,
It’s been great seeing so many players taking the plunge into Plunderstorm and we’ve loved seeing all of the stories and feedback as this experimental event evolves. It will be exciting to see some of the community content creators going head-to-head as duos during the Plunderstorm Creator Royale on March 30!  This isn’t the end of the things we want to try in World of Warcraft, however, and we have more in store we can’t wait to show you.
Dragonflight Season 4 is in route as testing begins on the PTR and we’ll have more news to share soon™ on the next experiment we have up our sleeves. We hope those of you who are looking for PvE focused content will enjoy what we’re planning, all while we continue to press forward on development of our next expansion for World of Warcraft— The War Within.
We can’t wait to share with you all the many things the team has been hard at work on.
With gratitude and excitement for what we’ll do together next,
      Holly Longdale

We've looked at the Mythic+ Tier List for the first time in Patch 10.2.6!
