December is here, and that means the end of the year! There’s much to see and do, and we have our eye on what the community's up to, too. In this December edition of This Month in WoW, we're looking forward to some of the more remarkable things going on in the World of Warcraft community.

December 4: The Great Collegiate Dungeon Race Concludes

Look out for the end of a six-week crusade—the teams in the Great Collegiate Dungeon Race are conquering Mythic Keystone dungeons and competing for a share of $20,000 in scholarship prizing! Are there adventurers on your campus who have what it takes to destroy the Burning Legion?

The Grand Finals take place on December 4. Check out the standings here.

December 13: Legion PvP Season Rollover

On December 13 at 6:00 a.m. PST, Legion PvP Season 1 will come to a close. But the battle will pick up again just two hours later at 8:00 a.m. PST, when Legion PvP Season 2 begins!

Here are some quick details:

  • Legion Season 1 titles and mounts will be awarded approximately two weeks after the season ends.
  • With Legion Season 2, the maximum number of times you can Prestige will increase from 4 to 8.
  • Weekly Rated Quest rewards will increase.
  • The transmog look for Season 2 PvP reward gear will remain the same as Season 1, so if you haven’t gotten your full set, you still have time!

Holidays

Feast of Winter Veil [December 16-January 2]

The Feast of Winter Veil is one of the most anticipated events of the year! While enjoying a freshly nutmegged cup of nog, and crunching on a crumbly cookie or two, be sure to visit Greatfather Winter in Ironforge if you’re Alliance, or Great-father Winter in Orgrimmar if you’re Horde. While there, you’ll find a few treats, and surely a few tasks to take on as well.

Greatfather Winter is visiting the great cities of Ironforge and Orgrimmar—courtesy of the fine folks of Smokywood Pastures—and he's spreading cheer in celebration of the Feast of Winter Veil. But, all the cheer—spreading is making Greatfather Winter hungry, and he's looking for helpful adventurers to fetch him some milk and cookies.

Darkmoon Faire [December 4-11]

The wondrous and mystical Darkmoon Faire returns to Azeroth on December 4, and if you haven’t completed all of Silas Darkmoon’s new Darkmoon Races, now’s the time! Test your speed and agility on a variety of racing mounts as you dodge electrifying obstacles and zip all over Darkmoon Island for rewards and achievements. You may also want to take a few moments to be a kid again by going for a ride on the new Darkmoon Seesaw.

The faire continues to be one of the best ways to acquire heirloom gear, and don’t forget all of the toys, mounts, and pets that can only be gotten here. There’s even a pair of Feasels!

Bonus Events:

The Bonus Events system consists of a rotating schedule of different activities that each grant a passive bonus to players and offer a once-per-event quest with a noteworthy reward for accomplishing a related goal. Check out the Adventure Guide in-game for a direct link to active Bonus Events, allowing you to easily accept any associated quests.

Battleground Bonus Event — December 6-13
While this event is active, random Battlegrounds will award Honor at an increased rate.

Legion Dungeon Event — December 13-20
While this event is active, the final boss of each Legion dungeon awards an extra item when defeated.

Pet Battle Bonus Event – December 20-27
While this event is active, your pets will earn experience at triple the usual rate.

Timewalking Dungeon Event: The Burning Crusade — December 27-January 2
While this event is active, players level 81 or higher may access a special Timewalking Dungeon Finder queue, which scales players and their items down to revisit past dungeons from the Burning Crusade expansion. While Timewalking, bosses will yield loot appropriate for a player’s natural level.

LOL.  Agreed.  What I can't understand is how I can hand him 400000000000 of anything and he will burn 99% percent of it.

He must literally just pour it all into a big vat of charcoal and watch as everything burns.

Maybe it was more of a failsafe in a way.

Lord of the Shadow Council is ready, but so are you!
The Nighthold opens this week and finally we'll be able to put Gul'dan to justice. Our Survival Guide has all the information you need to know about the latest Legion raid.
No prerequisites required to enter the raid. Ahead of the Curve: Xavius is removed when Nighthold opens. The raid has ten bosses and is non-linear. The first 3 bosses need to be defeated in a specific order:  Skorpyron > Chronomatic Anomaly > Trilliax After that you get access to 5 bosses that can be killed in any order. The last two bosses that need to be killed are Elisande > Gul'dan. Defeating Gul'dan on Mythic difficulty grants the Mythic: Gul'dan achievement and the "Vengeance Incarnate" title. Players will finally end the Suramar story line and acquire the Arcanist's Manasaber mount. If you've completed Unleashed Monstrosities, you can work your way toward completing Improving on History to unlock the base appearance. The Direbeak and Bloodgazer falcosaurs require Nighthold to open before you can get your mounts - Brilliant Direbeak & Predatory Bloodgazer. Glory of the Legion Raider also has some Nighthold-related achievements and rewards Defiled Reins. Raid Schedule
Normal and Heroic difficulties are available starting January 17. Mythic difficulty and the first wing of Raid Finder will open one week later.
      Blizzard Entertainment
Raid Schedule: Tuesday, January 17: Nighthold Normal and Heroic difficulties open. Tuesday, January 24: Nighthold Mythic difficulty and Raid Finder Wing 1 (Arcing Aqueducts) open. Tuesday, February 7: Nighthold Raid Finder Wing 2 (Royal Athenaeum) opens. Tuesday, February 21: Nighthold Raid Finder Wing 3 (Nightspire) opens. Tuesday, March 7: Nighthold Raid Finder Wing 4 (Betrayer’s Rise) opens. (Source)
      Nighthold Guides
Our guide section has been updated with boss guides for Nighthold, don't forget to check them out to be Ahead of the Curve: Gul'dan. Should you need any help, feel free to post in the PvE forum.
Skorpyron Chronomatic Anomaly Trilliax Spellblade Aluriel Tichondrius Krosus High Botanist Tel'arn Star Augur Etraeus Elisande Gul'dan (TBA) 7.1.5 Class Guides
All 36 specializations in our Class Guides have been updated for the latest patch.
      Legendary Items
After Nighthold opens, players will be able to upgrade their existing item level 910 Legendaries to item level 940. Emissary caches will start dropping Legendaries of item level 940 by default.
      Aerythlea
Since the release of Patch 7.1.5, we've received a number of questions relating to the Nighthold Legendary item upgrades and how that process will work. We'd like to provide some clarity on what you can expect next week.
When the Nighthold opens next week, players who have acquired at least one Legion Legendary item will find a quest in Dalaran to upgrade a Legendary from item level 910 to 940. This quest involves collecting a number of
Essence of Aman'Thul, which can be found in the following locations:
Nighthold Raid Bosses Weekly Mythic Keystone Cache Emissary Bags PvP Weekly Quests Once you have completed the quest, you'll be given a Distilled Titan Essence, which can be consumed to upgrade a Legion Legendary item to level 940. The quest is repeatable, so you'll be able to earn as many Distilled Titan Essences as you need to upgrade any Legendaries you have.
Additionally, once the Nighthold is open, any new Legendaries you discover will already be item level 940. Note that this does not apply retroactively to Emissary Bags that you may already have in your inventory when the time comes. Only new bags earned after the Nighthold is open have the chance to reward an item level 940 Legendary.

      Tier 19 Sets
Nighthold is the first raid to drop sets in the Legion and we've taken a closer look at Tier 19 here.
      Nighthold Mounts
Fiendish Hellfire Core is a guaranteed drop from Gul'dan on Mythic difficulty. The drop chance will be reduced to 1% after a new expansion is released.
Living Infernal Core has a chance to drop off of Gul'dan on any difficulty except LFR.

      Gul'dan (Mythic Only Phase)
This part contains major lore spoilers, proceed with caution!

The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza was removed, because of CRZ issues. With Patch 7.1.5 it is back as a world quest, offering the same rewards, but now it's more forgiving as more players per region to complete the quest are considered winners. This is a good change especially for realms with high population.
At BlizzCon they talked about 50 winners, but based on live, numbers seem to be higher.
Winners will be awarded the Master Angler of Azeroth achievement, which is required for Accomplished Angler and the "Salty" title.
Rewards that all winners can choose from are
Arcanite Fishing Pole Boots of the Bay Dread Pirate Ring High Test Eternium Fishing Line Hook of the Master Angler Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza can now be found as a world quest in Booty Bay (similar to how quests appear on the map during the Call of Scarab micro-holiday).

On January 16, 2007 the first expansion for World of Warcraft launched. The Burning Crusade turns 10 today!
The expansion brought us two new playable races - Draenei and Blood Elves. We got flying mounts that were usable in Outland at Level 70. Outland became accessible via the Dark Portal in Blasted Lands. Sockets were introduced to the game and added to Jewelcrafting. The original Karazhan was added in the Burning Crusade expansion. The expansions added Tier 4 through 6 Sets. Patches
Patch 2.1 added the Black Temple and daily quests and the opportunity to enter Hyjal. Attunement wasn't as easy as it is today. For Hyjal, you had to complete The Vials of Eternity, but the problem was that both Kael'thas Sunstrider and Lady Vashj dropped a limited amount of vials and it took months for a full raid to get attuned.
Patch 2.2 added voice comms to the client.
Patch 2.3 added Zul'Aman as a 10-player raid where you could get Amani War Bear and brought quality of life improvements to 20 - 60 leveling.
Patch 2.4 introduced Isle of Quel'Danas, the first outdoor zone that was added with a patch. There was a lot of world PvP, daily quests, where the whole server had to participate to unlock a vendor, Magister's Terrace (where we learned that Tempest Keep was merely a setback) and the Sunwell Plateau raid.
      World Firsts
Remember Nihilum? They snatched a lot of world first back in the day!
      Mount Hyjal
Nihilum was the first guild to down Archimonde in Mount Hyjal.
      Serpentshrine Cavern
Nihilum defeated Lady Vashj when she was bugged and I don't know if it counts as a world first, but there's no video of the kill, instead, here's one by Method.
      Tempest Keep
Kael'thas Sunstrider was downed by Nihilum, another world first.
      Black Temple
Illidan Stormrage was brought to justice by Nihilum. He drops two legendary items - Warglaive of Azzinoth and Warglaive of Azzinoth.
      Sunwell Plateau
SK Gaming downed Kil'jaeden. who drops Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury.
Are there any fond memories that come to your mind when you recall "The Burning Crusade"?

Blizzard still hasn't resolved their issues with reward distribution for PvP Season 1. Initially, Starym wrote about how rewards needed to be re-evaluated and now we got an update about what actually happened and why there were delays.
      Aerythlea
Each season, we reward titles to the players at the top of the 3v3 and RBG ladders based on the number of players we consider active in the bracket. For the last few seasons, we have only considered players active if they have a rating above 1000. For Legion Season 1, we made the mistake of also requiring players to have 50 wins to be considered. As a result, far fewer players were considered active than intended. Since rewards are a percentage of this set of people, we ended up giving out too few rewards, which in turn meant that many players received a lower-tier reward than they should have.

Fortunately, we have a plan in place that will allow us to fix the issue and grant rewards based on criteria we've used in previous seasons. Within the next few weeks, we will re-evaluate the ladder from Season 1 and redistribute rewards. When this occurs, you will either receive the same reward you have currently, or, in some cases, a higher-tier reward.
      (Source)
Rewards are coming and should be redistributed next week!
      Aerythlea
Just a quick update, we're still reviewing the accuracy of the data, but barring any unforeseen problems, we hope to re-distribute rewards at some point next week. (Source)
