How to tell when ready for raiding? Prot war

Recommended Posts

I just switched to prot tank on my war about a month ago. Iv been running raid finder SOO as dps and setting loot to Prot. My ilvl is 518 as prot (no trinkets have dropped for me so those are pretty low ilvl). Iv been running heroics to practice tanking, however its joke. I barely take any dmg and im not learning much. I started tanking heroic scenarios and have been really tested. I havent died yet but keeping up health has been a problem. My friend tanks h scens all the time on his DK but he has way more self heals. Does this mean I should stick on heroic scenarios to practice more or is this not a good representation since I dont have a healer? When do you know you are ready to start tanking SOO? (our plan is to start doing 10 man flex with guildies soon)

It seems like you're really not letting yourself tank at all. H scens and heroic dungeons are not at all reflective of raid tanking. The only way you learn to raid tank is to do it. That said, running LFRs as DPS isn't teaching you anything about tanking. LFR is severely nerfed content and has very little crossover with actual raid tanking, but it will at least let you see some of the mechanics. Flexes would be better to show you what's going on. Remember, you don't have to just tank flexes with your guild, you have the opportunity to use the in-game raid browser, open raid, or on-server pugs to get your feet wet. Just make sure to read guides for the bosses and prot warrioring in general before doing so.

Well, you go get the various Ready for Raiding achievements, duh.

Jokes aside, if you've read up on how the fights work in raids (or pay attention to the tanks when you're doing LFR), LFR is really not a bad place to learn to raid-tank.  While all the dps mechanics for LFR are based on the assumption that they're all self-sabotaging morons (Spine... *cries*) the tank mechanics survive relatively intact.  Stacks fall off more quickly and such, but other than that it's the same mechanics most of the time, and the low tuning is perfect for a new tank.  Whisper the other tank for advice/stack counts/etc. and be prepared for the usual LFR toxicity, but if you go into it with the mindset that you're going to learn (and make that clear to at least the other tank, if not the raid if they comment) it's a valuable experience.

Once you're comfortable with LFR, then I'd move on to flex.  If you've got a group that's willing to show you the ropes you could start there, but between your gear and relative new-ness I think LFR would be less stressful and more productive at first.  (I can't believe I just said that.)

Good luck, and have fun!

Hey there, ive been a healer since vanilla and recently switched to tank because guild needs it more.. I didnt know anything about any fight mechanics as a tank... Like when to taunt and stuff... But best practise is always read about the fights, or even watch videos from different sites.. But my biggest advice is try tanking with old content LFRs... With ur gear, ull be more than alright... Raid lfrs like, MSV, TOES and when your getting better at it, try TOT then move on to SOO.. Thats all i did and thats what worked for me... =) hope i helped you in anyway... Happy tanking!!

Keep in mind that LFR DOES cut out tank mechanics. One in particular is the tank swap mechanic on Sha of Pride. In LFR, it is simply not there at all. In flex+, not only is it there, but it requires very quick taunts.

Thanks for all the replies. Iv been reading alot so feel pretty confident with the fights. Iv done them as dps so even though there are different tank mechanics, at least iv seen the fights and know alot of the main abilities. I had actually been thinking about doing old raids to get some practice. I will finally finish the vaor cap this week for legendary cloak chain so was thinking i would tank alot of tot for the secrets. Im excited to start raiding again, esp getting away from LFR.

I concur with the others. Trying it out is the only real way to learn.
That being said I suggest throwing a whisper to your co-tank at the start of the LFR/Flex, to let them know that you're new to the roll, but have tried to prepare as best as possible. It's nice for him/her to know, and you might even get a few pro tips out of it.

Also, try not to get discouraged when you screw up and get everybody killed. It happens to all of us every once in a while and - provided you take responsibility and try to learn from the experience - it's no big deal.

Oh, and have fun out there :)

Scepter is a guild with a semi-hardcore mindset, We aim to clear all content on Heroic difficulty. When we can, on top of that we try getting some Mythic kills too. (if enough people)
Scepter is based on the Horde side of Draenor, there is no obligation to be on the server to raid with us, you can be Alliance or Horde and play on what ever server you feel like and still be able to play with us, you only need to join our Discord and our Community in game.
      About Us
We’re a group of friends who have been playing together since Legion and picked up new members along the way, and these days we’re more a community of people who play mainly wow raids and push m+ - but also a ton of other games to have fun together outside of wow as well, especially with those of us that no longer play wow but still want to stick around due to the friends made along the way. We generally put IRL as a priority over the game, but that doesn’t mean we don’t take it seriously when neccesary. But we do aim to keep a chill, fun, banter-esque atmosphere since games are meant to be fun.

Any social and friendly person who wants to join us for kicks and giggles is welcome. Just poke any of our officers online and you will get an invite for a social spot (no raiding spot).
      ABOUT US:
Gordian Knot is a semi-hardcore raiding guild that consists of experienced raiders with some of them having raiding experience as far back as Vanilla.
We are a friendly group who enjoys World of Warcraft and loves raiding. We have fun and joke around but when bosses need to go down then all is serious! We wish for all our members to enjoy the game as much as we do and we expect raiders to maintain a 80% attendance per month. Our wish is for this guild to provide a place for our members to call home and enjoy all aspects of this game in a fun and relaxed environment.
We also enjoy a variety of other activities such as running a lot of Mythic+ dungeons doing alt-runs, achievement runs etc.
We generally aim to push Mythic+ to get +15 keys done for the weekly chests. We do this in spirit to help everyone in the guild getting their highest possible gear reward from their weekly cache (socials included).
There are a few things we hold in high value but above else we value friendliness and politeness towards guildies and other players and skillfulness when it comes to the more serious parts of the game.
      CURRENTLY:
We raid 3 nights a week, Wednesdays, Sundays and Mondays, from 20:15 till 23:15 server time. Our raid invites always start 15 minutes prior to each raid.
Although we are a 20-man guild, we usually run an extra group in order to get more people to experience the joys of raiding, help new raiders learn the Knot’s way to down bosses and gearing up. Usually, these runs happen on Thursdays, and also we’re on RBGs killing alliance scums every Friday or Saturday or on other in game activities if not on RBGs!
Our current guild progress is 7/9 in Amirdrassil heroic, and we're focusing on getting further progress in Dragonflight. Our aim is to always progress as much as possible but also to have a relaxed and fun atmosphere at the same time!
If you're interested in joining Gordian Knot, please fill in our application form, located at https://gordian-knot.eu/apply/, or join our discord https://discord.gg/FVR8HPB, alternatively please whisper one of our officers:
