Tanks in WoD

5 posts in this topic

So after seeing the patch notes for 6.0, I've been wondering what the new best tank class will be. Right now I tank on my warrior and I plan to keep tanking on him as well in WoD. One were looking pretty strong and two because I love my warrior, but I do have alts.

So what class do you think so far is looking like the best tank?

The best tank is an individual, not a class. Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses, but due to the issues with vengeance in MoP, the most prized tanks tended to be the ones with the best damage output. That will likely still be a consideration come WoD, but may be less emphasized. Warriors tend to do well with add tanking as long as the adds spawn at one time and with SBar, warriors are very strong against burst damage and magic. It is unlikely that warriors will be on the bottom come WoD, but I'd be surprised if we're as strong as we are now. A well played warrior will always be an asset, but we will not likely end up as the flavor of the month again.

If you are a tank that is distracted by doing DPS and you fail to exercise reasonable damage mitigation, I will let you die and the raid team wipe, even if I get kicked from the group. I am a healing specialist and I bust my butt to be the best healer each and every time. I do not get sidetracked by DPS, and I don't expect you to either (especially all you prot warriors, that leveled tanking on DPS alone). If you have the best tank for damage mitigation and threat gengeration, you have the best tank.

At no point did I say that a good tank doesn't mitigate. At no point did I say tanks should be preoccupied with their DPS output to the point that it is hurting them. The tanks classes in general tend to be very well balanced in terms of mitigation so any class, comparatively well played, will mitigate very similar amounts of damage and thus that isn't currently the deciding factor in which class to bring to progression. The decision is then based on utility and damage output. As I said before, the best tank is an individual and will be able to be effective on any class and will bring the class most needed in a given situation.

I don't really get what you're saying here. Every tank class can choose to level as a tank or DPS. I have leveled all of my tanks as tanks. Taking it further, most healers level as DPS as well, so I really don't get the point here.

The best tank involves being someone who can react to what's going on in a fight, use CDs before big damage goes out, keep mitigation up and use the most appropriate type of mitigation (if there's a choice), as well as being attentive to positioning and the needs of the group. The best tank will do all of this and also have a good damage output. Time and time again Blizzard has stressed that tank damage matters and so it does. Fights are tuned with tank damage output in mind. Tanks need to be handling both intake and output simultaneously and because of this, tank classes are often chosen because of the difference between output since intake will be manageable on any class. Threat generation is tied into damage output as well.

With the buffs BrM monks just got they are really strong, druids are very very strong atm with savage defence now a 70% reduction and 2 charges of it.

But like Etsarriol said its about how you play as a player more then as per class.

Tanking is going back to tanking, in other words staying alive and positioning the boss/raid rather then loling at your dps cause you damage is twice they can put out.

You day that you will be tanking on your warrior in WoD and to be fair prot warriors do seem pretty strong, Estarriol would be able to go further into that as she plays prot warrior but when tanking with her on beta (on my pala) there wasnt any majir issues, font forget warriors were the original tank and have always done awesome when it comes to survivability.

Hopefully thecks TMI will start becoming a real tracked log thing much like dps and hps is now and then us tanks will actually start being ranked for something that makes sence for us... survivability!

In the mean time, love what you play and play it well, thats why we play this game aint it?
