Making in-game gold - hints and tips!

Recommended Posts

If you're like me then you just love making ingame gold. I'm by no means the richest WoW player out there, but hitting milestones likes 100k, 200k, 500k etc have been really rewarding for me.

For those that hate making gold (like half of my guild) it seems like its almost impossible.

So how do you make gold?

My favourite money maker at the moment is selling Mysterious Fortune Cards. I am quite amazed the number of people still buying them to flip over for cash. I also use them to make plenty of Fortune Cookies which sell really well on my server.

I have the majority of professions maxed out which does seem to help a lot. But I find I am grinding mats less and less and just buying them off the auction house, milling, prospecting etc and making a quick easy profit that way.

In terms of my most profitable sale, I managed to buy a Ranseur of Hatred right at the beginning of 4.2 for 35k and resold it for 75k within 5minutes. Not too bad for a few clicks!

So what tips do you have for fellow players? Boast your gold hoard, your greatest sale or how bad you truly are!

I made most of my gold through Jewelcrafting. At the beginning of Cataclysm, I prospected a lot of ore and sold the gems on the AH. These days, I mostly buy raw Queen's Garnet at the cheapest price I can. I cut them and sell them back on the AH.

For those interested, there is this blog: http://coldsgoldfactory.blogspot.com, it gives regular tips on how to make gold. We have been following it for quite some time.

I've never thought about grinding any transmog gear to sell! Might check that out at some point.

I've started to buy plenty of Cata mats on the cheap. Things like hypnotic dust, ore and herbs are really starting to drop in price on my server. There will be plenty of new monks with MoP as well so I am gathering mats for professions that people will want to power level.

"Choke points" of a profession where you need certain mats to get to the next stage are always great. A particular favourite of mine is Illusion Dust and Greater Eternal Essence. With a lot of people going to Outland at level 58 these mats are always in short supply so you can make some nice profit!

Nearly every profession has hard parts to push through so if you dont have an enchanter just look through your own professions and try and remember the hard parts and sell those mats instead!

It actually works very well. You might have heard of the Mogfather transmogrification contests on the US servers. They are organised by Keelhaul from Disenchanting Azeroth. More than 3 million gold have been given away during these contests. A large part of it came from the profits Keelhaul made at the beginning of Patch 4.3 by selling tons of BoE transmog gear he had acquired for almost nothing during Patch 4.2.

I just wanted to add that Keelhaul has retired from running The WoW Factor transmog shows, the last post on his blog is here. If you're looking for more information the WoW Factor shows or how to get them to come to your realm, check out their site here.

Right now, I'm running at around 10k gold. Most of it made from Enchanting. It would be higher had I not got really into LoL and I let my sub expire... I usually just disenchant items or do some merchanting to make my money.

I have got every profession at maximum level across several level 85 characters. The key I have always found to making maximum gold was in timing. For example, prior to the Inscription profession being added there was a lot of discussion about it on several sites and forums. I knew I would have needed a massive amount of herbs to maximize profits so I dropped mining on my hunter, and farmed every herb at every zone I possibly could. I deposited all the herbs into a herb bank character - complete with 3 tab private bank. Once the inscription patch went live, I levelled the profession as quickly as I could using as many of the mats I had gathered as possible. I made a huge amount of glyphs and sold the lot at ridiculous prices. Result!

When patch 4.3 went live, I did the same thing again. Only with Red gems and "common" enchants. Every player and their alts were replacing gear like crazy from the HoT dungeons and there was a constant massive demand for all gems and enchants. I had a miner mining like crazy, ore was prospected. Gems were transmuted and any of the less desirable gems I prospected got turned into rings / neck items for disenchant. I made 300k+ gold profit in less than 2 weeks from that alone.

The gem / enchant market has slowed down a lot now as I would have expected it to. But there are still a lot of other easy money makers. As a tailor doing Tol Barad dailies, I pick up a lot of cloth (via Northrend scavenging) - easily enough per run to make at least one pvp blue item.. These sell for 700k each on my realm.

You just need to see what's in demand - and make sure YOU are the one who can supply it.

Please tell me that's a typo. If not, tell me your server so I can transfer :)

A tip of the wise for you tailors...make bags. and make a lot of them. When Cata launched, I made nearly 250k in bags by saving up all the Netherweave and Frostweave bags I could get my grubby hands to make...and they sold. When no one else had bags or cloth to make bags, I happily price gouged bags up to 350g per...and they sold faster than I could post more. I have 500 Netherweave bags, 400 Frostweave bags, and 100 Embersilk bags ready for people with big wallets to drop gold into my wallet for their alts/Monks to have nice bag space =)

Quite an obvious tip here, but still a good and very over looked tip. Simply don't spend money on the AH. Don't buy anything - farm the mats and make it yourself or have a friend / guild mate make it for you.

Zagam thats a great idea! May get onto that one with my tailor! Keep the ideas coming people.

Exactly what Redcross said. Getting the mats yourself increases your profit by a lot. Right now I'm at about 96k gold (most gold owned ever). I'm only making money in GDKP runs and in our DS25HC raid sales. They give a pretty good income.

On one of the realms I play on, player run casino / gambling seems to be very popular at the moment. I personally would strongly advise AGAINST ever participating in this kind of activity. There are repeated instances of people being scammed very large sums of gold. The promise of winning big is only there to entice you in, and like any gambling activity - is usually weighted in favour of those in charge of the event. Stay well clear of it!

I always thought this was against EULA Redcross? Like you said the odds are always stacked against you and you are putting a lot of trust in the person organising the event as you have to hand your money over in advance. I would definitely stay away from them. There are much easier ways to make gold without ever having the chance of potentially losing any.

Am not sure what Blizzard's stance is on in game player run gambling. I would imagine it is a very grey dodgy area. I personally am very self sufficient and certainly would never entertain the idea of using it. When I see people advertising (usually by /yelling) gambling activities, I will always right click - report player .. and would suggest others always do the same.

I remember using it once with a character that was on a brand new server, with no friends, guild or gold and I wanted to get a head start on my cash. I managed to make my whopping 5g into 40g after a few gambles and decided to walk away with the cash jingling in my pocket. Maybe a little bit of fun with lower amounts but never worth any large cash sum!

Don't quote me on this, but I believe that I read a post from Blizzard saying that it is within the bounds of the EULA, with some sort of caveat. It's ok to do it, as long as you don't "do X". I'll research it.

i can tell you from experience, that a lot of these ideas above work, because i do them Posted Image im stockpiling bags to sell as well, and just a hint, Kara (where the spiders are) run in, kill, loot, run out, reset repeat, ALL the netherweb spider silk you need for 150g bags Posted Image ran that section of kara for 1/2 an hour and had 10 bags made.

I normally herb farm, and i also Rare spawn hunt!!! use npc scan and set up routes on your farming runs that overlap, and use those blues they drop as extra 300-1k gold per drop for MORE sales! or get lucky and get poseidus mount to sell, which sells for 65k-150k, and ive had it 3 times now doing my herb/rare spawn route!

Also pets, pets pets pets ..people love their pets, and on our server you can pick up pets in netherstorm and resell them on ah for obscene amounts over what they were worth. Mana Wormling 30g i think to buy, i sell them for 125g ea. the snakes, roaches, bunnies, etc sell for about 50-75gold each. Use your baby Horde alt to transfer to you in booty bay auction house all the dragonhawk hatchlings.... buy them for a few silver each, and sell them on alliance auction hall for 125g EACH...... i ALWAYS have at LEAST 300 items on AH at all times, and a LOT of gold that just keeps rolling in ..... we also do charity giveaway fridays...our "alms for the poor" days to help us balance out our gluttony LOL, have to keep our Angels straight Posted Image

This is very against the Terms of Use. I've seen several people banned for this, although they eventually got the ban repealed. Also they were the ones running it so that's probably why they got banned.

im starting to think of the hierloom enchants in MOP.

as we all guess there will be many pandaren monks. i have not read much about them but they seem to have AGI as a major stat, at least dps and tanks(?). the majority will roll dps and an off spec. so if we focus on the dps - which enchants will be needed?

for the weapons its the +15 agi that needs rep with timbermaw hold. i did that and it took like 45min to get it. they also have the 2h agi enchant but that might go for the tanks?

the chest is major health or the +stats. major health is bought by vendor and the other one is a rare drop in tbc i believe. crazy expensive when ever in ah. i believe this goes for all specs?

the cloak i think the stealth option is good for dps and tank. it provides +dodge and +agi. it needs exalted with cenarion so i guess this is my next projec.

feel free to add enchants that might be needed in MOP

Following up on my earlier post, here is a link containing the blue posts on the matter of gambling ("casinos", as Blizzard calls it): http://www.wowwiki.c...inos#Blue_posts

As you can see, the issue is kind of gray (although it seems that in Europe it is indeed outright prohibited). Moreover, keep in mind that these blue posts are 3 years old.

The Enchant Weapon - Agility has always been a good seller due to high demand from low level PVP players. The mats are slightly annoying to farm for it though, and if you are looking to make profit I'd recommend not buying them from AH.

My wow subscription is ending today (i'm taking a break from wow for a bit)
but my main is a level 36 hunter and has about 300 gold.
I know that when you dont have a subscription there's a limit on how much gold you can have (10 i think. same a the starter edition) so my question is. what would happen if i were to go into my level 36 hunter (if i could) what would happen to the gold i already have?

I've been trying my hardest to climb in Ranked. I started the season at Gold 2, and have now fallen to Gold 4 from losing streaks. How half my games go these days. 1. I call Support 2. I play nearly perfectly 3. We lose, with me having DOUBLE the healing of the enemy healer, sometimes doubling an enemy double support as a solo support (not an exaggeration), and no deaths, with healing percent around 50%. And yet my teammates are comical. Once we lose a fight, they do things like hang around alone against the entire enemy team, push alone, blame teammates, and generally be useless. Nor do I cause the frustration, I'm nearly always polite and helpful (encouraging teammates, making strats, etc.). Yet I keep losing. Do I need to do TRIPLE the enemy healer to win, or am I just cursed? Perhaps someone from IcyVeins could spectate a match of mine and tell me what, if anything, is wrong with my play. I know that's a big favour, but I'd appreciate it. I can upload replays if someone tells me how.

Hi guys. I got this idea from a thread on reddit talking about how players "share" the challenge a friend quest to double the gold earning by finding players on discord who have the same quest and playing against them so both players get 160g. My innitial thought was how to filter out people who may pretend to have the same quest to get the 80g, without the actual quest owner getting an extra 80g in return. I don't know if there are people like that out there, but I feel icy-veins being a more closely knit community, would inherently keep such people at bay. We can have a thread for each region and people can edit their posts once they have found someone and completed the quest.
I thought this would be a nice way for people who don't have rl friends playing the game to find new friends  to share gold with. Plus it doubles the gold you earn from that particular quest. I think many people would be interested in getting max gold before Un'goro hits. I don't know if icy-veins policy allows for this or not so I thought I'd ask what you guys thought about this?

This Guide is no longer valid
(Only valid during Warlords of Dreanor. Before Patch 7.0.3)
So I've been watching some Youtube videos (MetaGoblin) and found several videos regarding how to make gold using your garrison in WoD and Legion, spending about 5 minutes each day per character for about 1000g per day per char.
      Section 1: Garrison Setup:
      Large Plot:
Barracks Level 3 (Simply for the +5 Follower Perk)

      Medium Plot:
      Trading Post Level 1
Lunarfall Inn / Frostwolf Tavern Level 3

      Small Plots:
Gem Boutique Level 2 (Assign Follower)
Scribe's Quarters Level 2 (Assign Follower)
      Salvage Yard Level 3 (Pre-Legion)
Alchemy Lab Level 2 (Can replace the Salvage Yard)
      Special:
Pet Menagerie Level 3 (Pet Battle Dailies)
      Shipyard Level 3
      Section 2: Followers and Missions
Using the above setup, you should have about 23 followers able to do Follower Missions. Ideally you should have followers with the Treasure Hunter trait, which can be recruited weekly from your Inn/Tavern.
The Level 3 Inn/Tavern Perk allows you to do Follower Missions that rewards gold, and with each follower doing the mission with the perk increases these rewards.
There are also some follower missions that reward a Medallion of the Legion, Champion's Honor and Ogre Cache (Resources) that can be sold on Auction House
I suggest you get the addon called Master Plan. This allows you to optimally send followers out on missions.
You can get about 200g per character per day simply doing these follower missions.
      Section 3: Shipyard
The shipyard occasionally has missions missions rewarding gold. Simply see the Icy Veins' Garrison Shipyard guide.
      https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/garrison-shipyard-complete-guide
      Section 4: Trading Post
This will allow you to trade those Garrison Resources (GR) that are automatically generated for materials. The only 2 traders you need to be using are:
Pyxni Pennypocket - Sells Herbs at a 1:4 ratio.
Trader Yula / Elder Surehide - Sells Ores and Furs at a 1:4 ratio.
      Section 5: Menagerie
      Simply see Peelyon's guide:

These reward 8-10 Pet Charms per character per day. Also in Legion, you will need about 2000 Charms to buy the new pets and toys.

      Section 6: Small Buildings
      Gem Boutique:
When you assign a follower, you can do a daily quest. These quests can be completed without having the Jewelcrafting profession by using the NPC inside the building.
      Rewards a bag containing 180-250g.
      Scribe's Quarters:
The follower can craft partial orders every day per character. Once you combine 2 partial orders of the same name it can be vendored for about 75-250g.
      Alchemy Lab:
You can craft the Draenic Philosopher's Stone simply to vendor it for 25g
      Salvage Yard:
Follower missions reward a chest that contains items which can be vendored or sold on auction house for gold. I suggest you keep all your boxes until the Transmorg/Wardrobe system is available before opening the chests so you have all the transmorgs that they will provide.
