[Arcane] Not pulling enough DPS-Frost change

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am an i577 Arcane Mage and I pull trash DPS... I burst for 700k on average but I on good pulls I can go up 1M and on bad ones 500k. By bad pulls I just mean bad trinket procs or just stupid mistakes. Those are getting rarer and rarer but unfortunately I shit the bed during the log so I will explain my usual opener in a bit.

So anyway the burst phases are fine but the I feel like after that I go downhill FAST. I usually end up around 300k DPS but on fights with heavy movement or mechanics that force me to stop DPSing for a bit (such as laser on Siegecrafter) I do much worse. The only fight were I have 400k numbers is Fallen Protectors but I should be WAY more due to multidotting.

So my question is am I playing arcane very poorly or is it that I need to switch to Frost to see way better numbers.

There was a bunch of stuff I forgot that fight because I was distracted but usually on Malkorok I would have Temporal Shield, better uptime on LB and also pre pot.

Thanks in advanced.

Hello blastyy and welcome,

Let me preface that if you play arcane poorly (I haven't even read the logs yet) that you are going to play Frost poorly as well.

The first huge think you should improve your Rune of Power uptime. As arcane the uptime of that is even more important than for example Frost Invocation. Lacking RoP means you don't have Mana. This means that your DamageperMana drops and blablabla your numbers become terribly gimped.

Second is that you have both a low uptime on Living Bomb combined with a low RoP uptime. That means your bombs both tick for lower damage AND you don't have bombs ticking all the time.

There are also times on Malkorok that you are doing nothing damaging to the boss, neither casting RoP. That means you simply lose damage because you are not doing any.

These are the only things I can see right now.

Also do not underestimate the power of prepotting.

Cheers
Berlinia

Ty Berlinia. I just discovered WarcraftLogs and this might be the most amazing analysis tool ever. I pretty much saw the same 2 things that you saw but I hadn't read your response yet. But like I said that was a bad fight for me. I got into a new raid (this was Flex btw) for Nazgrim and I ignored the adds up until the end so the encounter was mostly like Nazgrim.

My uptime for both Living Bomb and RoP while not perfect are much better and I would that this is actually what my uptime numbers look like most of the time. Sometimes they are higher and some times they are lower..

Nazgrim Log: http://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/1xcvCyJjAFmTbwYp#type=damage-done&source=5&graph=true

P.S. For some reasons someone lusted mid-fight and apparently my awareness sucks as while I did notice my DPS going up, I didnt notice that it was from lust. Could have timed something better with that but I would say this fight is a good benchmark for how I usually play.

P.P.S. I have been reading the theory-crafting for the Incanter's Ward and I am wondering if it would actually be superior to RoP my some margin on Thok. You wouldn't have to cast it during P1 so less chance of being interrupted and more time to cast AND you wouldn't have to re-cast it a billion times. I am not sure how most guilds do Thok but mine kites him from the left side, up, right and then all the way down the hall after which it goes back and forth between up and down. It is hard to DPS and keep RoP up like that.

Thok is a bitch... I have nothing more to say :P

But IW's problem is that it has lower mana regen % increase than RoP. The best way to handle RoP on Thok imo is using Blazing Speed and double blink.

I'll look through the logs later.

Ok cool! Just a side note I will be raiding Heroic SoO tonight and I plan to log every boss. I think it will paint a much more accurate picture so if you would prefer to analyse those then please give me a couple hours to get the logs up :).

Ok unfortunately my crappy WoW crashed like it does every so often and my combat logging turned off after Immerseus and I did not realize until the end of the raid... So no more logs for now :(

There is an addon called auto-combatlogger which will enable combat logging every time you enter a raid. :)

Also, try to reinstall wow or run a repair at least if it does it indeed frequently ^^

Ok I will be raiding tonight and ill be able to grab some logs but quick question... Atm including the raid buff I am not hitting the +2 ticks LB haste break point since I have been using mage armor exclusively.. Is it better to use Frost Armor to meet that break point?

Oh yea completely forgot about this post.

Essentially the first thing that stands up is your Living Bomb Uptime and Rune of Power uptime. RoP might at times be low on Malk if you get terribly gimped by RNG but Living Bomb has to always be high!.

The second huge thing that I can see is that you are not weaving Arcane missiles and Arcane Blasts!
AM/AB weaving is one of the main techniques of doing damage.

Ok I got some real logs..

Up to and including Irong Jugg: http://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/jYt371aVwyxAFbQn
Up to and including Spoils: http://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/vnBzf3xtYhwHNj8k

So the first thing I noticed was overall, I had an average of 85% uptime on LB for bosses. This is horrible tbh and I thought for sure I had a much higher uptime. I have a tracker showing me and I always refresh right after 2s remaining so clearly there are times where I forgot to refresh it for for an entire LB duration or something..

Second, what do you mean by AM/AB weaving? I looked it up and all I could find was scorch weaving...

Essentially the practice of staying at 4 charges and over 80% mana for the whole fight.
Reach 4 stacks. Use 1 AM to get 2set buff followed by AB again and again, unless by doing so you are going to get under 80% mana.

I have a question for Arcane mages that I couldn't find existing guides mention on any website. In dungeons, mana is not typically an issue as a healer because you can just drink/eat in between packs, I mained a healer up until now so that mindset is just ingrained in me. As Arcane Mage, would the same principle apply? Is it optimal to just forgo the conserve part of the rotation and just burn as much as you sustainably can with every  pack, since you can just eat conjured food in between packs, or should you still do conserve/burn phases similar to what you'd do in a raid?
      Thanks.

Skunkworks is a guild for players who can not or do not want to commit to the time-intensive raid schedules of traditional "hardcore" guilds.
However, we still maintain a high caliber player environment and make an efficient use of our raiding time.
We raid Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 - 11:00 PST, just 8 hours a week and never more.

We are very protective of our guild environment and selective in recruitment. We are looking for solid players mechanically as well as intellectually.
We all get paid to deal with idiots, why should we pay to spend our leisure time with them as well?

Skunkworks has been around for multiple expansions and has historically always been at the top of the 2-night raiding guild scene.

Right, so today Kil'Jaeden's burning wish dropped for me, my 3rd legendary.
I have Shard of the Exodar and Cord of Infinity currently - and with the 7.2 changes to Cord of Infinity I don't know what to do/pick/run with?

Is Burning Wish still going to be BiS with 7.2, the changes to Cord of Infinity on PTR are pretty awesome, and as for Shard - two Time Warps per fight is pretty awesome too.

      So, hence my dilemma lol...
Forgot to add, I play Arcane.

Ok so raiding in guild, on Star Augur Normal im struggling to hit and stay consistent at 300K, yet when i did LFR i did 500K+ (lowest i went was 450K)
Not doing anything different and its been like this with the other bosses. Followed the rotation guide and everything i'm doing is right, checked stats etc and they are right, but still struggling to get decent DPS.
In our logs i am always in the grey (meaning im not utilising stuff more) but yet i have no idea how to change this as i am literally using cooldowns when i can and also doing my burn phase and conserve phase when i need to.
