[Preparing for the raid] Frost or arcane?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

i am back in WoW swith this expension (i left at wotlk) and i really want to do PVE. Now, back in the old days, frost spec was a PvP only spec, but it seems that now, it is the way to go if we want to do some decent damage.

But apart from people qqing on official forums and some theoretical simulations like http://www.simulationcraft.org/reports/Raid_T17M.html , i didn't see any specific numbers, even on that forum.

I reached a point where i have to make a choice about my stats priority, and i spent  quite some time mastering the arcane cycle rotation (or priorities shall we say). Now i am wondering if  continuing in that way is a big mistake or not.

Is staying in the arcane spec and prioritising mastery stats a decent option? . Or is Frost the only viable option to get a high DPS? (and then, read about this spec that i don't know a damn thing about and try to find some multistrike gear).

I have to say i really like the arcane and it's arcane charge system!

Thank you very much for your answers :)

Hey tapn

It really depends on the guild you are in. If you are within the top 200 let's say and you absolutely need to do every little bit of damage because otherwise the boss won't die, then Frost is sadly the main option.
However Arcane isn't useless. Its a good spec and you won't be gimping your raid in any way by playing it.
If you enjoy it play it!

Sadly? Frost4lyfe! Hahaha

It's true though, for most guilds either spec is good. Just don't touch Fire. As much as I love Fire, atm no. Just no.

It's not too terrible, as long as you like tickling bosses and being carried by your rogues.. :D

Hey guys,

Thank you for your answers!

i am definitly not in the top 200 guild (sadly not time for that even though i would have loved to try the hardcore raiding once in my life), so i think i'll remain true to the arcane way and the day lord Blizzard buffs us, i'll be rewarded by having my gear already optmised!

Arcane got a small buff today.  :)

Arcane Blast damage has been increased by 10%.

Though there's a note in the patch notes that not all class changes are live yet.  Would be nice if they specified which ones were live or not.

Yea arcane now is almost equal to frost for single target damage patchwerk.

do you have the numbers on this? on simulationcraft i still see a 2k(normal) and a 4k(mythic) gap between the 2.

i love playing arcane but frost gives shiny numbers

Isn't caster DPS overall a lot lower than melee? For single target at least

umm... no?

Hi guys,

Well i guess i didn't wait that long after all =)

I have a few questions :

1) how does this 10% buff on arcane blast stack with the arcane charge? Do we add the percentage or do we multiply them?

So for example, if i have 4 arcane charge, is the dps of my new arcane blast (AB) equal to (oldAB dmg)*110%*200% =220% or rather equal to (oldABdmg)*(10%+ 200%) = 210%

2)Does this arcane blase buff means that on a mono target fight, would it be wiser to get the passive talents rather than spending time casting nether tempest and/or Arcane orb?

3) I am not sure i understand multistrike correctly. If multistrike procs, does it hit the same target or an additional target?

Thanks for your answers!

hey tapif

1) If I am correct they are additive buffs to the %spellpower of a spell. Like Arcane Blast has for example 100% Spellpower coefficient and after the recent buffs it has 120% Spellpower coefficient.

2) Good of you that you noticed that the AB buff means a secret buff to Unstable Magic. But no, it's still not strong enough.

3) Same target!2

Not with blues on, but with 665 item level, Fire is on top again. But the spread from top to bottom is simming at 1K DPS even in BiS gear, so once we get into raiding, you should be able to play whatever you like.

im going to try arcane tonight and see how it feels. frost and arcane are both very cloth in sim. with frost im annoyed that PC screws up so many things for frost.

1 if tank moves mage no dmg.

2 if boss moves mage no dmg.

3 MI or elementel only hit the boss not the PC ---> water jet aswell.

4 PC and FO do not have the same CD

5 you if RNG doesnt like you you're screwed, FB basedmg is to low they should nerf procs and put base dmg up.
