Stat Priority - Haste

Recommended Posts

Hey hey,

My mage has been my main since WoTLK. I'm just curious as to why haste has gone from being our No. 1 stat priority, to dead last. Is it not still beneficial, more so than crit and mastery?

We have great crit chance with Shatter and haste increases pet dmg as well as lets us pump out FB faster which directly results to the possibility of more FFB procs. At the moment I'm sitting on 336ilvl and feel so sluggish getting frostbolts off, especially with fights requiring a lot of mobility.

I too have been looking at my haste stats slowly lowering item by item and cringeing each time, debating whether I should keep a lower level item with loads of haste in it, or scrolling through the AH to find an item enhance. Nothing I have picked up yet has gem slots. However I read somewhere, that we should be looking to improve our multistrike stats, and that this will help instead of haste. I am not convinced probably because I don't really understand what multistrike is all about. Would love to hear what others think and happy to be enlightened.

Hey there guys!

I can answer this in a pretty simple way.

The fact that haste is dead last aint true tbh,

you could play with alot of haste to and get good dps.

But the fact is that you need more haste than you need multistrike to put out the same amount of dps.

I dont know the exact maths for this but,

30% multistrike is around 1 out of 3 hits should be a multistrike wich can procc u 3 frostbolts wich then will do first 30% dmg and then after that it will do around 10% dmg.

If you want to play around with haste to get the same amount of dmg you would need around 60% haste if i didnt miscalculate.

And that would be hard to reach this early in an expansion since i have like 4.5% :P And i have about 20% multistrike..

I think haste will be a valuable stat to have under control later on in the expansion but only until you've reached a breakpoint and after that multistrike will become the absolute best again.

Each of the two potential additional hits from multi strike can lead to brainfreeze procs, so that really makes that stat shine.

Between haste and crit I think it has to do with the multitude of abilities we have that generate fof. Fof itself only benefits from the lower gcd provided by haste, so the more you proc through means other than fb the less valuable haste becomes. The opposite is true for crit. The more often your casts are impacted by shatter the more often crit is getting 1.5x it's base value. T17 bonuses are also probably impacting this.

Less sure on reason for versatility being valued over haste/mastery without doing maths.

Ninjaplupp, you are doing better than me! My haste has dropped to under 3%. I would prefer it to be higher, but I am just not picking up items with any haste in them, so I would have to enchant cloaks, add belt buckles, and what ever I else I can, in order to get a decent haste percentage back. My gear is changing so quickly, this doesn't seem to be a good way to spend my gold until I settle with some higher level gear. I am a stubborn old gal and am sticking with fire, which I started back in BC, despite suggestions that I should go to frost.

Fuzada, I am sorry, you have a much better understanding of the game than me, and I just don't understand all the letters and numbers you have used. Could you please explain what is fof? fb? procs/proc? T17? I should be able to work out what you mean if you could kindly explain these.

Many thanks,

Jac

There are several reasons why haste has become quite bad.

I have only played frost since 5.4 so i can only comment on the changes since then.

Reasons why haste fell off.

1) Multstrike attunement and its role in procing Brain Freeze.

2) Raising the crit cap necessity. Considering that crit was a terribly strong stat till the cap for us it now remains to be so only the cap is raised.

Reasons for versatility and mastery and haste being roughly equal: In siege of oggrimar we really liked haste was our only way to increase the amount of FoF and BF procs per fight.

Now we have water jet, T172set AND frozen orb to generate FoF and Multistrike to generate BF.

We also have little versatility in gear inflatez the stat weight of vers from SimC.

Mastery is worse now partly because more of our damage comes from non Mastery generating spells (more FoF's).

Hope this gives some insight.

Edit: Forgot to m3ntion haste stacks multiplicatively so thr fact that we cant have high enough haste whilst prioritizing ms and crit makes us benefit very little by the raid buff

5.4 versus previous tiers is about the same. I think the Haste changes in 6.0.0 is really what killed it. And to be fair, it killed it for a lot of classes.

Also, if you aren't in that 90-100 range then whatever gear you have works. At 90-100 all gear is predetermined by spec in quests. So you don't really need to worry about stat weights until 100.

      Hello everyone,
Last patch gave us 40% and 10% damage increase on ray of frost and glacial spike
Does anyone know of these changes make them relevant ?
Should frost mage play with these or one of these now ?

      Hi Everyone,

Returning to D3 after an absence.
Trying to figure out the best desired stat rolls for items as per the guides, have always struggled with this.
Am deciding to play DH Shadow Impale build this season 25. For example:

      The Compass Rose
      1. Socket
      2. Critical Hit Chance
      3. Critical Hit Damage
      4. Area Damage or Attack Speed
So am I looking for a ring rolled with all these stats? Because most of the time it will roll with Dexterity. So wouldn't it be unlikely that I would find such a ring?
If I had one with say Dex,CHD,socket and Attack speed    -     should I reroll Dex into CHC? Doesn't this defeat the purpose of Ancients? (as the ancient would have possible higher Dex but not higher CHC)
What if CHD was really low and Dex was really high? What if overall damage goes down because I re-roll Dex?
I'm confused. Just trying to figure out how to decide between 2 items.
EG: I have 2 Convention of Elements
      Priorities are:
      1. Socket
      2. Critical Hit Chance
      3. Critical Hit Damage
      4. Area Damage or Attack Speed
      Ring A (Ancient):                Ring B (non-Ancient):
      +618 Dexterity                     +473 Dexterity
      CHD : + 46% (rolled)            + 49% (rolled)
      CHC: + 4.5%                           +5.0%
      Socket                                     Socket
The game shows no difference in damage but minus in toughness and recovery on Ring B (must be secondary stats)

Which Ring is better? (should I choose?)
Thanks for any explanation of this. Especially @Deadset

So the stat priority page of the guide ranks haste much higher than strength but the consumables guide recommends the feast for strength even though the haste food offers more haste which should make it the better choice surely?
Hoping someone more aware of the theorycrafting to clear that up for me.

This mainly applies for raiding by the way but if there is a different answer for M+ I am interested to know the answer there.
