Blood DK Multistrike Softcap?

7 posts in this topic

I am growing increasingly curious if there's ever going to be a part in our stat priorities where we stack multistrike until enough of it, then going mastery afterwards, seeming as Wowhead tends to mention the idea of stacking Multistrike until the spec flow feels comfortable in their little guide, was wondering if this is worth trying at all.

P.S Thanks for giving me your thoughts on this in advance! :)

In first place: Mastery is our main defensive stat (besides bonus armor of course).

As I am a more defense-fan in tanking, I will always prefer mastery over multistrike for exact that cause. Also mastery is a more reliable stat as it is considered for every deathstrike you use.

There are some theories around to use multistrike to hit more often with our deathstrike, but I am curious if this will really outweigh the bonus we gain from mastery.

So I personally would never trade mastery for multistrike.

Regarding the next-prior attributes (versatility, crit etc..)... maybe it makes sense to use multistrike as your next priority after mastery.

Also in the discussion thread for the guide in the forum (http://www.icy-veins.com/forums/topic/7281-blood-death-knight-603/page-3) this basically is also part of the last discussion (in first place by me ...).

But at the main guide site you will also see 2 different stat priorities depending on more offensive (more or less the way you think about handling your playstyle) or more defensive (the way I prefer).

One time I forgot to change from my DD equip back to my tank equip for some HC inis... still worked out quite good with a not really good equipped heal on my side, and the DD gear mostly consists of multistrike of course, but also has a good amount of mastery.

So I guess there is a possibility that mainly depending on multistrike may indeed be a valid way and worth to try (but maybe with a heal you can trust on this).

If you tested it, please also tell us the results.

TLDL;

I guess the way is valid, but is an extremely offensive way (and will give the healer a tougher time) and in my opinion, mastery should at least have a higher priority than multistrike.

According to logs multistrike hits from death strike don't multistrike heal, so there's 0 defensive gain from multistrike, unless someone can prove otherwise with the combat log.

This seems to be the case. I have examined my logs since January (44 boss pulls) and can see quite a lot of Death Strike multistrike damage, but not a single instance of Death Strike multistrike healing.

Wondering if this is a bug to be reported, or Working As Intended . Other tanks´ self heals, for instance prot pally WoG can multistrike.

I'm not sure. it could be a bug in Warcraft logs. I've checked world of logs also and it doesn't track multistrike at all for anything. It could be a bug on blizzards side, or maybe it's working as intended because Blood DK's are really strong right now as is, if we add in multistrike heals we'd be extremely overpowered, and they'd probably need to nerf the base DS heal to make up for it. If I'm feeling really ambition at some point I'll hit a target dummy and read through the raw log to see if I can find any mulstrike DS heals.

I'm quite positive that DS heals don't multistrike. Also with enough multistrike, like 25% (or more? i haven't tested it) and spell_deathknight_breathofsindragosa.jpgBreath of Sindragosa you can do some serious dps as tank, if you can manage your runic power well. Of course at some fights its better to use defile.

I love mogging. To my knowledge, these are all original. I'm sharing cause I love finding cool mogs to spark my imagination and push the boundaries of what I've made. You'll notice I have favorite pieces of gear that I re-use in a number of these. As far as I know these are all blood elf death knight obtainable. I have completed almost every set you see here. I'm currently digging frost...

I have one of every class so I'll eventually have a video up for them all. I won't be sharing what each piece is. You are of course welcome to remake them yourself, I've just found that discovering the pieces and trying to see which ones fit really help devolop mog sense. If that's what you're looking for, this video should be fun!

I will NOT be using BoS in 7.1.5...  why?
      http://www.wowhead.com/item=132459/perseverance-of-the-ebon-martyr
      Build:
      http://www.wowhead.com/talent-calc/death-knight/frost/cj7z
Basically with the combination of Gathering Storm (extended RW) and fitting more Rime into that time period I'm hoping that my M+ hybrid spec will remain competitive and the sims thus far seem to support the theory.
If you have the helm too, grats! and look forward to the major increase in it's power with Freezing Fog +30% and Tier 19 based around more Rime and more RP from Rime we should see many viable builds popping up on logs. **Stay with FP for now until you have T19 x 2 - see updated build link ^^
Why not BoS and Hungering? ... well, I'm looking for big Rime crits and don't fancy the long CD to manage. I also want to remain powerful in M+ which should be the case with this build... I'm pretty sure I can become more useful with Winter is Coming + extended RW... stunning mobs for the whole of PoF uptime.
Obliteration will be used to maximise rune spam for Gathering Storm.
      Lets hear your thoughts?

So, i'm lvl 866 crit - castigator - soul reaper. Crit 27%, haste 18%, mastery 29%.  Draugr, Girdle of the Everlasting King and Sephuz's Secret. I simc at 305k dps single target. When i switch to CS - necrosis - dark arbiter, i simc at 298k dps. But my gear is crit-heavy low-mastery and i've no Deadliest coil traits yet, so i wonder if mastery build is really better now. But icy and noxxic still suggest crit-build. Does anyone have the possibility and gear to simc two of this builds with the same ilvl gear. Please share.

The advice for frost dks on this site right now seems very... oversimplified. With so much different gear, with different legendary combinations things can get rather variable, so I had a few thoughts and questions.
Firstly, base 'rotation'. Recommended talents tend to go:  Runic Attenuation and Obliteration for single target, or Frostscythe and Glacial advance for the aoe true 'machinegun build'. Single target with obliterate is simple enough, but using machinegun build during periods of single target dps, all they have is a base priority list that seems lacking.
      They recommend:
      Frost fever up>Glacial Advance>Remorseless Winter>Frostscythe>Frost Strike
And that's really all it says. I've been sticking with the same talents even in single target, and I've been making due with the following:
      Frost Fever up
Frost strike to keep Icy Talons from dropping (typically once every 2-3 global cooldowns) or if your RP is almost capped.
      Frostscythe with KM proc
      Howling blast with Rime proc
Glacial advance and Remorseless Winter when available
Obliterate for rune dump and rime procs

Done properly, and with normal luck on procs (and decent haste), you should be able to keep Icy Talons at near 100% uptime.
Beyond that, the stats it advises amounts to soft crit and haste caps, then Versatility > Mastery. But a spec using lots of RW, GA, and big Frostscythe crits makes me wonder if more mastery wouldn't be better. Especially if you get  the legendary bracers (Toravon's whiteout bindings) which give an extra 15% frost damage during PoF.
With the same legendary in mind, is it worth using Frostscythe on single targets during PoF?
And if you have the bracers AND the ring that gives 2x charges of Empower Rune Weapon, how does dps compare for Breath of Sindragosa build? I can imagine amazing burst dps every 2 minutes, but would that make up for the lack of avalache and glacial advance?
