WOM or COW in HM?

Recommended Posts

Kargath: CoW - no movement, great tank heal for the impaled tank, and lets face it, what else are you *really* going to be doing? Mythic Kargath is easier than heroic Imp... >.>

Butcher: CoW - tank healing which can be an issue on this fight because he hits like a damn truck and cleave hits like a damn truck.

Brackenspore - CoW *ONLY* if necrotic breath destroys your tanks, otherwise WoM
Tectus: WoM, lots of movement, no time to hard-cast CoW.

Twin Ogron: WoM - again high movement, no time to CoW when needed. Although, maybe spec CoW if WW tank death is an issue.(I don't see why it would be, but idk)

Ko'ragh: CoW - RIDICULOUSLY strong at keeping up the soaker. Keep an eye on the shield and pre-CoW the person going in to soak so you can then CoW adds tank and then just spam CoW on soaker, GG WP soaker doesn't die. Plus it's relatively lower movement so you *CAN* afford to stand there hard-casting CoW.

Imperator: WoM - LOTS of movement, lots of raid-wide damage, no time to CoW the active tank.
I know you've heard this from me before, but this is my thought-process behind my 100 talent choice ^^'

Edit: Keep in mind that I've done all of Highmaul via PuGs, so I tend to take CoW on the harder hitting fights to make up for loss of a decent holy pally or decent tanks and co-healers. I go into raids with the premise that both tanks and all healers suck, so CoW to help with that. If you're with a guild group you could probably WoM everything, especially if you have a decent holy pally or two(tank healing is all they're good at pretty much). Only fight I'd definitely CoW is Ko'ragh and Bracken if necrotic breath gives trouble.

Kargath: WoM. Seems the norm is to take CoW to help the tanks during impale, but in our group CDs, a shield and a EAA+FH usually takes care of it. There's enough movement that I'd rather not be standing around casting for 2.5 seconds.

Butcher: WoM, no time to cast CoW and plenty of opportunities to cast PWS so that PoM just jumps around

Brackenspore: CoW, there is no contest here. It's pivotal to keep the tanks up during necrotic breath and it helps tremendously with the mushrooms

Tectus: CoW, tank damage becomes insane in the later phases.

Twins: Either, depends on whether our paladin is there to pad our whirlwind tank. Though CoW is unideal with so much movement.

Ko'ragh: CoW, really strong for either healing the tank with the intermission adds(hit like a truck) or the soakers.

Imperator: WoM, no really big need for tank healing and PoM is decent during nova and adds.

Do as I say, not as I do.  My selections don't always reflect what I suggest in the Priest notes.  They are based on those Priest/guilds learning the fights  :)

Heroic (assuming guild group):

Kargath - WoM

Butcher - WoM

Brack - WoM

Tectus - WoM

Twins - WoM

Ko'ragh- WoM

Imperator - WoM

Mythic:

Kargath - WoM

Twins - WoM

Brack - CoW

Butcher - WoM

Tectus - CoW

CoW on Tectus is one thing I really don't see how it works out? In the last phase you literally have NO time at ALL to sit there and cast CoW, there's so much shit going on - Crystalline barrages, lots of small pillars and Earthen Pillars. This is espcially true in mythic when you have all 8 shards up at the same time, you have so much movement going on and a decent chance at getting a barrage I really don't see how CoW can work here. WoM is just so much easier to manage, whilst good CoW usage relies on RNG not throwing all the mechanics at you. I mean, if you can show me via logs or something how it can work out I might have another look at CoW when I next do Tectus, but I just don't really see how it can work.

My own guild has a policy of keeping logs private, so I can't show you mine. But here's one example of using CoW on Tectus a friend of mine partook in.

Oh wow, okay. I might take another look at CoW for Tectus then.

I fill in for a run on Fridays as a disc priest. I normally do WoM but I'll tinker with CoW and get some logs up here. I run as Holy for Heroics as we already have a disc priest so I won't be able to showcase it properly.

This debate is going to light up in 6.1 if the PoM buff goes through. A 100% increase to the number of stacks and a roughly 50% increase to its coefficient is a huge change.

absolutely, I mean even now I am already getting into arguments with various priests and other players over which is better for each fight. There seems to be a lot of COW fanboys who defend its use even in HEROIC in which I think (unless your tanks and healers are under-skilled or under-geared) it is absolutely useless

For the most part, I agree with Gwen's choices- I RARELY, if ever, choose COW for any heroic encounter, and I'm still very hesitant to use it on Mythic Brackenspore - I have to really just hold my breath and force myself to choose it over WOM for that fight. I am much more comfortable using it on Tectus.

COW is definitely the more difficult choice to play with because it really requires a lot of uptime and skilled usage to make it worthy or beneficial

One good point that was made to me was the superiority of COW over WOM if you are stacking mastery. I heavily stack mastery- at 669 ilvl I currently have 34.69% unbuffed (according to armory)- does that mastery go to waste if I choose WOM over COW? Would it be a good idea to start focusing a little on crit, or is mastery stacking worth it for PW:S alone?

I used CoW for almost every fight in HM and made the time to cast it.

We had no pally so it worked well.

Alot of the choice imo comes from what group makeup you have and if WoM is going to be wasted or not.

I definitely agree.  For our group composition, I focus on the tanks and melee in group 1 with a holy paladin on melee and beacons on tanks - resto druid and shaman on ranged.  The fights with a lot of movement make CoW challenging to use of course, but I've found I still get more out of it than PoM for the most part.  Tanking classes are also a factor to consider - I find CoW helpful to keep our prot paladin more stable whereas not needed as much on our monk when he has guard up.
