The following guide outlines how to play Midrange Purify Priest. The deck utilises powerful minions with drawbacks and aims to Silence them to take advantage of their powerful stats. The nerf of Ironbeak Owl hurt the potential of the archetype but Silence Priest decks have seen some resurgence with the addition of Purify from the One Night in Karazhan Adventure.

3. Strategy

This particular build of Priest aims to overwhelm the opponent by getting powerful minions onto the board much sooner than they would normally be played. By having access to many cards able to Silence, the deck is able to negate the drawbacks of minions such as Ancient Watcher and Eerie Statue and use them to create strong board pressure.

During the early-game you are specifically looking for Ancient Watcher or Northshire Cleric combined with Power Word: Shield to get you a foothold on the board. If you have Silence in hand, it is not necessary to use it as you play an Ancient Watcher as you may find a better opportunity the following turn such as an opponent’s Nerubian Egg. Additionally, your opponent may even remove your minion before you even Silence it if they feel particularly threatened.

The Priest Circle of Healing package is included in this deck as it offers huge mid-game Tempo which is where this deck aims to thrive. The cards role is threefold, offering flexibility for various situations you may come across. Firstly, it can be combined with Injured Blademaster to develop a strong 4/7 minion that will likely stick around for turns to come, this provides strong board Tempo that can help control the board and potentially chip away at the opponents life total and making them easier to burst down later in the game. If you face a lot of aggression in the early game, Circle of Healing can be paired with Auchenai Soulpriest for a 4 damage AoE board clear. Additionally, the card can be used in combination with Northshire Cleric to draw multiple cards allowing go further into the game before running out of threats.

Heading into the mid-game, you are looking to play Deathlord and Eerie Statue as your big threats. The Deathrattle of Deathlord makes it a good Silence target to prevent the risk of giving your opponent a strong minion. However, as Silence also removes the Taunt effect of the minion, it is sometimes better not to Silence Deathlord to make sure you do not get rushed down and to protect your higher attack minions.

Wailing Soul is a strong minion that can often catch your opponent off-guard in the mid-game. While it already has respectable stats, being able to Silence your whole board offers the opportunity to activate multiple minions you may have set up previous turns. As it Silences your whole board, it can be worth holding off playing a Silence or Purify if you plan on playing Wailing Soul the following turn, this will ensure you do not run out of cards too fast and can potentially save you Mana to be spent elsewhere.

Shadow Madness is used to help against more aggressive decks. By using your opponent’s minions to trade into each other, you are often able to avoid the awkward situation of having to trade with your high attack minions. When using Shadow Madness it is important to prioritise Deathrattle minions where possible as you will also receive the Deathrattle effect if the minion dies on your side of the board. It is also perfect for dealing with Secrets by using a stolen minion to trigger them you remove the risk of falling victim to Noble Sacrifice or Freezing Trap.

Barnes is an excellent fit for the deck due to the Silence effects available in the deck. When playing Barnes, you should try to have a Silence ready to use the same turn as you will be able to turn the copy into a full strength minion. Although some targets are much better than others, any minion summoned by Barnes guaranteed to give value when the stats of both bodies are taken into consideration. It is worth looking out for Auchenai Soulpriest and Northshire Cleric when playing Barnes as both of these minions can offer useful effects to take advantage of before they are Silenced.

When trying to win the game, it is important to note that this is not a Control deck and therefore has finite power it is able to put onto the board. Outside of the early-game you should only really be trading if your opponent has a threat on the board that needs an immediate answer or you are protecting another minion. With a couple of threats on the board it should only take a few turns to take down your opponent, however if your opponent does manage to clear your board in time, the deck also have some burst damage available with Flash Heal combined with Auchenai Soulpriest.

3.1. Synergies & Combinations

The various Silence effects in the deck can be combined with Ancient Watcher, Deathlord, Eerie Statue, and Barnes to gain access to cheap powerful minions.

Auchenai Soulpriest can be used with Circle of Healing for a cheap 4 damage to all minions.

Injured Blademaster can be used with Circle of Healing for an early 4/7 minion.

Flash Heal can be used with Auchenai Soulpriest for additional burst damage. .

3.2. Mulligans & Matchup Specific Strategies.

As a proactive deck, you are just looking to mulligan for a powerful curve of minions in all matchups. Ancient Watcher is a key card to keep to allow you to start being aggressive as soon as possible, if you already have it in hand then you can additionally look for Deathlord and Eerie Statue for the following turns. As with other Priest decks, if you happen to have both Injured Blademaster and Circle of Healing in your opening hand then keep both as the amount of Tempo this combo generates cannot be overstated.

Against Aggro, you can give extra weight to Deathlord in your mulligan as it is likely to get you high value in the early-game. You can additionally keep Silence in your opening hand if you have a suitable target to ensure you have a cheap activator available.

Against Control, you can give extra weight to Eerie Statue as it is the main source of damage in the deck, it is important to have access to it as soon as possible before your opponent can draw into suitable answers.

3.3. Card Swaps

Sunfury Protector can be included as an additional activator for the deck, however it loses some value with the inclusion of Wailing Soul.

Fel Reaver can be included over Northshire Cleric to offer additional threats for the deck.

The removal in the deck is fairly flexible, Shadow Word: Death, Shadow Madness, and Holy Nova can be swapped with Shadow Word: Pain, Holy Smite, Excavated Evil, and Lightbomb based on personal preference.
