In the below guide, you will find instructions on playing Tempo Priest. Unlike many Priest decks that play quite reactively, this deck instead aims to aggressively gain a board advantage and maintain it throughout the game. This deck functions similarly in style to the old Undertaker Priest decks, and is aimed at replacing that archetype since the nerf of Undertaker.

3. Strategy

Tempo Priest is a Priest deck focused on gaining and maintaining a board advantage. Unlike many Control Priest decks that feature a large percentage of reactive cards that require specific situations to function, this deck instead focuses on having strong proactive plays on every turn and putting the emphasis on your opponent to have the right answers.

Your early-game options are very strong, with the potential for very fast starts using Mechwarper to rush out your Mechs for low Mana cost. Even if you do not get your Mechwarpers, you are able to still create strong board positions using early minions like Shadowboxer and Wild Pyromancer, while using Holy Smite to answer your opponents responses. Power Word: Shield is also a strong card in the early game to gain an advantage in the early minion trading battles. Gaining an advantage early is important for this deck, since it creates a platform you are able to build on in the later turns.

Going into the mid-game, you will start to gain access to strong tools such as Velen's Chosen to start to really impose upon your opponent. There are many fantastic targets in the deck for Velen's Chosen, Shadowboxer, Spider Tank, Northshire Cleric, and Mechwarper amongst others, all create huge problems for your opponent if they are buffed. You should avoid however, buffing one of your larger minions with Velen's Chosen as it puts too many resources into a single card, exposing you to hard removal like Hex, or Big Game Hunter.

Your mid-game also contains numerous other cards in order to maintain the tempo strategy of this deck. Azure Drake is great for digging deeper into your deck and ensuring that you always have strong options in your hand to maintain your advantage. Defender of Argus is a great tool for buffing two minions on board to create favourable trades, or to protect your minions from specific removal spells. Loatheb is another great tool to protect an established board from AoE, or spot removal from your opponent.

Should you fall behind on the board, this deck's options for catching up are relatively weak compared to other Priest builds, as you only have access to a single Holy Nova in terms of AoE. Due to this, you must pay close attention to the early turns and make sure you gain an advantage through trading your minions intelligently. This is not a deck that should be used to rush down the opponent directly, instead you need to use your superior minions, and the great utility of your Hero Power, to gain an overwhelming board advantage.

Entering into the late-game, the deck does play three great options to swing the final exchanges in your favour. Firstly, Piloted Sky Golem is a very awkward card for an opponent to deal with if they do not have a Silence available. Secondly, Mind Control is the ultimate trump card, and can be used to finally seal the game once your opponent has been forced to bring out the biggest threats in their deck in order to answer your momentum. Lastly, Kel'Thuzad is a great tool in a board advantage deck such as this. Since the deck plays a low amount of removal, and you will often have to clear your opponent's minions using your own, having access to Kel'Thuzad to revive your minions can be extremely powerful.

3.1. Synergies & Combinations

Wild Pyromancer in combination with spells can lead to some creative board clears. Priest can take better advantage of Wild Pyromancer than any other class. Using Power Word: Shield as your first spell will buff your Pyromancer's health and allow you to use more than the usual two spells before the Pyromancer dies. Compounding this further by healing your Pyromancer in the middle of the combo can extend your AoE range even further.

3.2. Mulligans & Matchup Specific Strategies

You will want to mulligan very aggressively for a strong start. Mechwarper is your number one priority, as it enables you to rush out strong minions like Shadowboxer and Spider Tank early. With this deck more so than most, you should pay close attention to your overall curve as opposed to just looking at the individual cards in your hand. You will want to make a strong play on each turn that uses all your Mana, and Mechwarper will have various effects on this.

Velen's Chosen can be kept if you judge that it is likely to have a strong target on turn 3. For example, against slower decks that are unlikely to fight back aggressively against your quick starts, Velen's Chosen can be extremely powerful to buff a high priority minion. However, in many cases, you would rather have a 3-drop minion like Spider Tank to play out instead. Keeping Velen's Chosen and having no target for it on the board on turn 3 can be very detrimental to your board development.

3.3. Card Swaps

Dr. Boom can be included in the deck in place of Mind Control in order to increase the proactive strategy of the deck. However, this deck currently plays no targets for Big Game Hunter, which means your Dr. Boom will be vulnerable if your opponent has one in their deck.
