1. Death Coil

Arthas Death Coil
Death Coil (Q) World of Warcraft Arthas
  • Mana: 50
  • Cooldown: 9 seconds

Deals 360 (171 + 4% per level) damage to target enemy. Can be self-cast to heal for 522 (248 + 4% per level) Health.

Death Coil Icon Death Coil causes Arthas to damage a single enemy target for a medium amount of damage. Arthas can also use Death Coil on himself to restore a medium amount of health.

Death Coil provides Arthas with a medium-range ability that is very easy to hit. Arthas can use Death Coil in two different ways: it can damage nearby enemies for a decent amount of damage, or it can restore lost health if cast on himself. If combined with the burst damage Frostmourne Hungers Icon Frostmourne Hungers provides and the damage-over-time of Frozen Tempest Icon Frozen Tempest, Arthas becomes a dangerous duelist who can bear down any other Hero before Level 10.

Death Coil is also a solid self-heal ability that is extremely useful if Arthas finds himself targeted by one or several enemy Heroes. During the laning phase, it is better to cast this ability on yourself in order to restore lost health than to use the Healing Fountain too early.

2. Howling Blast

Arthas Howling Blast
Howling Blast (W) World of Warcraft Arthas
  • Mana: 60
  • Cooldown: 10 seconds

Root enemies within the target area for 1.25 seconds and deals 149 (71 + 4% per level) damage.

Howling Blast Icon Howling Blast causes Arthas to root all enemies caught in the target area for 1.25 seconds. Rooted enemies also take a small amount of damage.

Howling Blast is a powerful ability that adds some great crowd control to Arthas' kit. It works very well with Frozen Tempest Icon Frozen Tempest and makes it extremely difficult for enemies to escape Arthas. However, Howling Blast needs to be aimed very diligently due to its slow moving projectile and thus requires Arthas players to correctly guess the movement of their chosen target.

Being an aggressive bruiser, Arthas is an excellent ganker who is capable of wreaking havoc in every lane he shows up in. It is very effective to let him rotate across the map. The following list contains the Heroes that harmonise particularly well when ganking with Arthas:

3. Frozen Tempest

Arthas Frozen Tempest
Frozen Tempest (E) World of Warcraft Arthas
  • Mana: 15 per second
  • Cooldown: 1 seconds

Deals 114 (55 + 4% per level) damage per second to nearby enemies. Slows enemy Move Speed by 6% per second, stacking up to 30%.

Frozen Tempest Icon Frozen Tempest is an ability that can be toggled on and off (instead of simply being cast). While toggled on, it costs 15 Mana per second, and it causes Arthas to be surrounded with an aura of ice that slows the movement speed of nearby enemies by 6% per second, stacking up to 30%. Enemies affected by Frozen Tempest also take a small amount of damage each second. Toggling Frozen Tempest off places it on a 1-second cooldown.

Frozen Tempest has a very low cooldown of only 1 second and can thus be used very frequently. It is an outstanding chasing tool that allows Arthas to pursue fleeing targets persistently. By the same token, it can be used to zone enemy Warriors and melee Assassins in order to protect your own team's backline.

Frozen Tempest also provides Arthas with decent waveclear that allows him to stop large numbers of enemy minions, and also enables him to clear Mercenary Camps very quickly. However, one of the biggest disadvantages of Frozen Tempest is its tremendous Mana consumption. If Arthas uses this ability imprudently, he will find himself low on Mana very quickly.

4. Army of the Dead

Arthas Army of the Dead
Army of the Dead (R) World of Warcraft Arthas
  • Heroic Ability
  • Mana: 100
  • Cooldown: 100 seconds

Summons Ghouls that last 15 seconds. Sacrifice Ghouls to heal for 586 (278 + 4% per level) Health.

Army of the Dead Icon Army of the Dead causes Arthas to summon 6 ghouls that last 15 seconds and attack nearby enemy targets. Arthas can activate this ability again to consume 1 ghoul which restores a medium amount of health. After consuming a ghoul this ability is on a 2-second cooldown until Arthas can consume the next one.

Army of the Dead lets Arthas summon several ghouls that will fight at his side. This Heroic Ability is purely defensive and allows Arthas to become an extremely durable frontliner. If your team composition consists of only one Warrior or lacks overall support, Army of the Dead is your go-to Heroic Ability.

There are several talents in Arthas' talent tree that synergise very well with Army of the Dead, as they will further boost his survivability. Frost Presence Icon Frost Presence fits into Arthas' role as a ganker, Rune Tap Icon Rune Tap provides some extra healing on Arthas' Basic Attacks, and Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell protects him against incoming burst damage from abilities.

5. Summon Sindragosa

Arthas Summon Sindragosa
Summon Sindragosa (R) World of Warcraft Arthas
  • Heroic Ability
  • Mana: 100
  • Cooldown: 100 seconds

Deals 504 (240 + 4% per level) damage and slows enemies by 60% for 3.5 seconds. Also disables non-Heroic enemies and Structures for 20 seconds.

Summon Sindragosa Icon Summon Sindragosa causes Arthas to stand in place and channel for 1 second. After the channeling process is complete, Sindragosa flies in a long, straight line slowing each enemy in its path by 60% for 3.5 seconds. Enemies hit by Sindragosa's frost breath take a large amount of damage. Minions, Mercenaries, and Structures hit by Sindragosa's frost breath are disabled for 20 seconds, meaning they cannot attack.

Summon Sindragosa is one of the most powerful crowd control abilities in the game. If timed correctly, it can single-handedly impact the outcome of a team fight. However, similarly to Howling Blast Icon Howling Blast, Summon Sindragosa requires some experience until you can get the most value out of it. The first thing an Arthas player has to take into account is its activation time of 1 second, which requires you to think ahead before actually casting the ability. This means you have to watch the enemy team's movement very closely in order to slow as many opponents as possible. Summon Sindragosa's very long cooldown of 100 seconds makes it a very unforgiving ability if used inefficiently.

Another way to use Summon Sindragosa is to disable enemy Structures while your team pushes, especially while having objectives like the Dragon Knight, the Garden Terror, or Webweavers active on the map.

6. Frostmourne Hungers

Arthas Frostmourne Hungers
Frostmourne Hungers World of Warcraft Arthas
  • Trait

Your next basic attack deals 100% increased damage and restores 30 Mana.

Frostmourne Hungers Icon Frostmourne Hungers resets Arthas' Basic Attack animation, meaning he can immediately execute another Basic attack. It also causes Arthas' next Basic Attack to deal 100% increased damage and to restore a small amount of Mana.

Frostmourne Hungers, Arthas' activatable trait, balances out one of his biggest weaknesses, which is his extensive Mana consumption. As previously mentioned, having Frozen Tempest Icon Frozen Tempest active for too long can exhaust his Mana pool very quickly. The same applies if he uses Death Coil too frequently, which is why we suggest using Frostmourne Hungers whenever it is available in order to maintain a healthy amount of Mana.

There are several talents in Arthas' talent tree that synergise with Frostmourne Hungers, however only Eternal Hunger Icon Eternal Hunger at Level 1 is considered to be a worthwhile investment. Other talents like Frost Strike Icon Frost Strike or Absolute Zero Icon Absolute Zero provide too little utility compared to their alternative choices.
