About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Diamond Flex player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. General Diablo Gameplay

Diablo's frontline role throughout all stages of the game is to:

In general, Diablo is at his best when working with one or more allies. This is due to the fact that he does not particularly deal much sustained damage until the later stages of the game, making it difficult for him to effectively take down objectives that are best taken quickly, such as Mercenaries and Structures. His sieging and waveclearing deficiencies make him sorely dependent on aggressively working towards Hero kills to generate an advantage; a passive Diablo is a dead pick.

Due to the length of his cooldowns, Diablo counterintuitively is at his best while on the outskirt of combat, waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce in. Such opportunities include fragile Heroes overextending, powerful Heroic abilities that must be interrupted, or a need to peel for allies being attacked. Patience is especially important for Diablo players, as he lacks the means to easily "get out" after engaging due to the nature of Shadow Charge Icon Shadow Charge. Also keep in mind that despite a large Health pool, you are not invincible; of all tanks, Diablo has the most limited damage mitigation and self sustain. Beyond this aspect, learning to body block block is an essential aspect of playing any tank; Diablo is especially good at it due to his large collision size and Overpower Icon Overpower's ability to displace opponents behind you.

2. Outside of Team Fights

Diablo is one of the stronger gankers around. Incidentally, his great dependence upon other Heroes make him a poor solo laner, as well as a poor candidate to claim Mercenary Camps. As such, you should see either occupy a lane along another Warrior or Assassin so as to try and land kills, or roam about between lanes to achieve the same goal. Before acquiring the Firestorm Icon Firestorm talent at Hero Level 13, his waveclearing is so abysmal that you should expeditiously express your intent to fulfill the role of a ganker to your allies.

3. Team Fights

Your team fighting goals and general behaviour vary depending on your Heroic ability choice. Apocalypse Icon Apocalypse is more reactive than Lightning Breath Icon Lightning Breath, in the sense that its use tends to be directly dictated by your environment and team composition. Refer to this section of the guide for more details regarding the recommended usage of these abilities.

A best-case scenario for Diablo players, beyond teamwide Heroic Ability hits, is that of singling out a valuable target, such as Assassins or Support Heros, with Shadow Charge Icon Shadow Charge and Overpower Icon Overpower so that your allies may follow up with their own abilities for quick and efficient kills. As such, you must develop the self-discipline to never waste these cooldowns unless your teammates are ready and willing to follow through. As an initiator, it is your duty to play to your Hero's strengths by evaluating important targets or being opportunistic, calling out your intended targets in time, all while appreciating your own teammates' positioning. Remember that the strongest of tank players are confident leaders that learn to dictate the flow of any match.

4. Summary of Tips and Tricks

  • Your main combo consists of using Shadow Charge Icon Shadow Charge to reach your target, and then displacing them towards your team with Overpower Icon Overpower.
  • The aforementioned combo is one of the most reliable means of both initiating a fight and peeling in the game; learn to recognise whether you are the aggressor or the defender.
  • Despite a large Health pool, Diablo is actually one of the easiest Warriors to take down due to his lacking mitigation, self-sustain, and mobility. Play safely.
  • After reviving through Black Soulstone Icon Black Soulstone, your Health pool is going to be 20% smaller; be sure to take this fact into account when re-engaging.
  • Shadow Charge Icon Shadow Charge can be used as a makeshift escape ability by targeting enemies that are away from your attackers.
