1. Dive

Illidan Dive
Dive (Q) World of Warcraft Illidan
  • Cooldown: 6 seconds

Dive at the target, dealing 145 (69 + 4% per level) damage and flipping to the other side of the target.

Dive Icon Dive causes Illidan to leap behind his target, momentarily slowing the target and dealing damage. Dive can be used on all enemy and neutral targets, including structures. Dive can be used to jump over walls and other obstacles, if there is a target on the other side.

Dive acts as your main source of mobility, and using it as a source of damage will actually decrease your overall DPS, as your Basic Attacks hit for more in the time that it takes to cast Dive. Since Dive moves you to the opposite side of your target, using Dive on a large enemy building, like a Keep, Fort, or the Core, will create substantial distance from where you were originally standing.

Dive should not be used to initiate, especially when ganking. It is instead better to use your mount to get within range to Sweeping Strike Icon Sweeping Strike, using Dive to follow up when the target flees. Dive should not be used just because it is available, and should instead be saved for when the mobility is needed.

2. Sweeping Strike

Illidan Sweeping Strike

  • Cooldown: 8 seconds

Dash towards target point, dealing 261 (124 + 4% per level) damage to enemies along the way. Hitting an enemy increases your Basic Attack damage by 35% for 3 seconds.

Sweeping Strike Icon Sweeping Strike makes Illidan dash in the targeted direction, dealing damage to all enemies hit. If at least 1 enemy is hit, Illidan's Basic Attack damage is increased by 35% for 3 seconds.

Sweeping Strike serves as your main source of damage from abilities. It should be used whenever it is available. Always try and hit an enemy when fighting, to trigger the subsequent Basic Attack damage bonus.

3. Evasion

Illidan Evasion
Evasion (E) World of Warcraft Illidan
  • Cooldown: 15 seconds

Evade enemy Basic Attacks for 2.5 seconds.

Evasion Icon Evasion causes all Basic Attacks made against Illidan to miss for 2.5 seconds. This includes all attacks from buildings, but the slow from Forts and Keeps still applies. The Basic Attacks from summoned creatures are not evaded.

Evasion can be a difficult ability to use, but when it is timed correctly, it can reduce a substantial amount of damage. Evasion should be used directly before enemies focus you with their Basic Attacks or crowd control effects, and it is the main reason you are able to clear Mercenary camps with ease.

4. Metamorphosis

Illidan Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis (R) World of Warcraft Illidan
  • Heroic Ability
  • Cooldown: 120 seconds

Transform into Demon Form at the target location, dealing 101 (48 + 4% per level) damage in the area. Temporarily increase your maximum Health by 439 (208 + 4% per level) for each Hero hit. Lasts for 18 seconds.

Metamorphosis turns you into a demon for 18 seconds. When you use the ability, you are transported to the targeted location, where you re-appear dealing damage to all enemies in the area and gain health for each enemy hero for the duration of the transformation. While you are casting Metamorphosis (during your travel to the target location) you are temporarily untargetable and cannot be Stunned or damaged.

Metamorphosis is a very powerful ability that is responsible for a lot of your strength. Its uses vary, from increasing your health, to dealing damage, and to dodging abilities. Although it might be tempting, it is generally wiser not to initiate with Metamorphosis, and instead to use Dive Icon Dive. Metamorphosis should be saved to reposition or to dodge key abilities like Uther's Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm, Valla's Rain of Vengeance Icon Rain of Vengeance, or even Muradin's Storm Bolt Icon Storm Bolt.

You can also combine Metamorphosis with abilities like Rehgar's Ancestral Healing Icon Ancestral Healing, where the delay on the heal is roughly the same as the casting time of Metamorphosis. Since Metamorphosis makes you untargetable, it can also be used to dodge skill-shots, as well as stop targeted abilities. A few examples of targeted abilities are Zagara's Hydralisks, Tyrael's Judgment Icon Judgment, or even Tychus' Overkill Icon Overkill. Metamorphosis can also be used to chase enemies that flee into the fog of war, whereas The Hunt Icon The Hunt cannot, since you need to select a target.

5. Betrayer's Thirst (Trait)

Illidan Betrayer's Thirst
Betrayer's Thirst World of Warcraft Illidan
  • Trait

Basic Attacks heal for 30% of damage dealt and reduce your Ability cooldowns by 1 second.

Betrayer's Thirst Icon Betrayer's Thirst (Illidan's trait) grants Illidan's Basic Attacks 30% lifesteal and causes them to reduce the cooldown of his Basic and Heroic Abilities by 1 second per Basic Attack.

Betrayer's Thirst is one of the strongest traits in the game. While the health gained from using Basic Attacks is helpful, it is the cooldown reduction from Basic Attacks that provides the real benefit. In effect, Betrayer's Thirst will reduce your cooldowns by around half if you are constantly using Basic Attacks. However, slows and crowd control will prevent you from using Basic Attacks effectively, lowering your ability to reduce the cooldowns of your abilities. This can be especially problematic for Evasion Icon Evasion, as a longer cooldown means that you are more susceptible to damage.

When your are not in combat with enemy heroes, your Basic Attacks on minions, buildings, and Mercenary Camps will cause Betrayer's Thirst to keep your health topped off and to significantly reduce the cooldown of Metamorphosis Icon Metamorphosis.
