1. Skeletal Swing

Leoric Skeletal Swing
Skeletal Swing (Q) Diablo Leoric
  • Mana: 50
  • Cooldown: 8 seconds

Swing in front of you to deal 255 (121 + 4% per level) damage and slow enemies by 40% for 2.5 seconds. Deals double damage to non-Heroic units.

Skeletal Swing Icon Skeletal Swing causes Leoric to take a swing at nearby enemies in front of him, damaging them and also slowing their movement speed by 40% for 2.5 seconds. Skeletal Swing deals double damage against all non-heroic targets, excluding Structures and Skeletal Defenders on Infernal Shrines.

Skeletal Swing provides Leoric with a reliable source of waveclear because it deals double damage against all non-heroic enemies, such as Minions and Mercenaries.

When using Skeletal Swing, you should position yourself in a way that it hits as many enemies (or Structures) as possible to maximise its efficiency. Keep in mind that killing the Wizard Minion (the one that drops a Regeneration Globe) as quickly as possible should be your main priority while laning, especially if you go for the Reanimation Icon Reanimation talent at Level 1. Skeletal Swing also synergises quite well with Leoric's Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope ability. If you slow your Drain Hope target with Skeletal Wing, you will make it a lot harder for them to escape.

2. Drain Hope

Leoric Drain Hope
Drain Hope (W) Diablo Leoric
  • Mana: 60
  • Cooldown: 11 seconds

Grab an enemy Hero's soul, dealing up to 25% of their maximum Health as damage and healing you for up to 25% of your maximum Health while you are nearby, over 4 seconds. You are slowed by 20% while this is active.

Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope causes Leoric to grab an enemy Hero's soul, constantly damaging them for up to 25% of their maximum health over 4 seconds as long as they remain within his reach. Simultaneously, Leoric heals himself for up to 25% of his own maximum health over 4 seconds. While Drain Hope is active, Leoric's movement speed is reduced by 20%.

Drain Hope is Leoric's most important source of self-sustain and thus needs to be used carefully in order to grant as much healing as possible. Knowing which enemy Hero to target and when to do so is crucial to increase Leoric's overall combat performance.

Using Drain Hope efficiently during a team fight should be your main goal when playing Leoric. As a rule of thumb, try to avoid nimble and ranged Heroes such as Illidan or Valla who can just use their superior mobility to quickly escape your reach. Instead, try to use Drain Hope on enemy Warriors whenever possible as they are less likely to run away from you. Simultaneously, targeting a Warrior also causes Drain Hope to deal more damage due to their high health pool.

In order to avoid any confusion, we would like to stress the fact that Leoric always heals himself for 25% of his own maximum health. That is why it does not matter which enemy Hero you target in terms of healing. In terms of damage, however, Drain Hope is more efficient against Heroes with a high health pool, notably Warriors and certain Specialists like Azmodan.

3. Wraith Walk

Leoric Wraith Walk
Wraith Walk (E) Diablo Leoric
  • Mana: 50
  • Cooldown: 14 seconds

Separate from your body, becoming Unstoppable and gaining Movement Speed accelerating up to 50% over 2.5 seconds. When Wraith Walk ends or is canceled, your body jumps to your wraith.

Wraith Walk Icon Wraith Walk causes Leoric to separate himself from his body, becoming immune to any form of crowd control and gradually increasing his movement speed up to 50% over 2.5 seconds. During that time, Leoric's body remains frozen in place and the player takes full control of a Wraith instead. As soon as Wraith Walk expires or is manually cancelled, Leoric's body jumps to the Wraith's current location.

Wraith Walk is an incredibly versatile ability that provides Leoric with great mobility. It can basically act as a gap closer in order to catch up to fleeing enemies or to escape sticky situations if you find yourself in an unfavourable position.

There are three talents in Leoric's tree that have an impact on how Wraith Walk works of which we find Hardened Bones Icon Hardened Bones particularly effective. Picking this talent allows you to become very durable while Wraith Walk is active. This helps you to withstand the enemy team's focus without taking too much damage due to its 25% damage reduction. Also, keep in mind to use Wraith Walk in time if you expect an enemy Hero to stun or slow you, as it makes you immune to any form of crowd control.

4. Entomb

Leoric Entomb
Entomb (R) Diablo Leoric
  • Mana: 75
  • Cooldown: 50 seconds

Create an unpathable tomb in front of you for 4 seconds.

Entomb Icon Entomb causes Leoric to summon a tomb in front of him for 4 seconds that counts as unpassable terrain. However, abilities that ignore terrain, such as Tyrael's El'Druin's Might Icon El'Druin's Might or Zeratul's Blink Icon Blink can be used to enter or escape the tomb. Similarly to Nazeebo's Zombie Wall Icon Zombie Wall, Entomb can be manually cancelled by pressing R again, which causes the tomb to collapse.

Entomb needs a lot of experience in order to be executed with maximum efficiency. While the Heroic Ability itself is easy to understand in terms of what it does, it requires you to know exactly when to use it and what target to use it on. The following list contains high priority targets that lack any form of innate escape mechanisms and are thus good targets to be entombed:

As soon as you cast Entomb, Leoric blocks the entrance to the tomb, which is why you have to measure carefully whether you want to prevent the enemy from escaping or allow allies to enter the tomb in order to attack the target inside. The former is recommended if your team has enough ranged damage to kill the entombed target from a safe distance. The latter is recommended if your team consists of at least one melee Assassin who needs to enter the tomb in order to unleash their full damage potential.

5. March of the Black King

Leoric March of the Black King
March of the Black King (R) Diablo Leoric
  • Mana: 100
  • Cooldown: 80 seconds

Become Unstoppable and swing your mace three times, healing yourself for 7.03% of your maximum Health for each enemy Hero hit and dealing 401 (191 + 4% per level) damage.

March of the Black King Icon March of the Black King makes Leoric immune to any form of crowd control and causes him to swing his weapon three times while marching towards a target direction. Enemy targets standing in Leoric's path take a large amount of damage each time they are hit while Leoric heals himself for 7.03% of his maximum health each time an enemy Hero is hit.

March of the Black King is a powerful Heroic Ability that combines raw damage with great self-sustain. It is important to note that unlike Skeletal Swing Icon Skeletal Swing, which only damages enemies directly in front Leoric, each swing of March of the Black King damages nearby enemies in a full 360° radius around him.

However, this ability has two major downsides which need to be taken into consideration before using it. Firstly, March of the Black King has a fairly high cooldown of 80 seconds which makes it pretty unforgivable if you do not use it wisely. Thus, we recommend watching the course and location of a team fight very closely in order to hit the enemy while they are clumped or fighting in narrow choke points. Secondly, March of the Black King causes Leoric to walk towards a target direction and cannot be stopped while the effect is still active. This means that you should aim very carefully before activating the ability in order to avoid finding yourself in an unfavourable position at the end of its duration.

6. Undying

Leoric Undying
Undying Diablo Leoric
  • Trait

Become a ghost when you die, and resurrect upon reaching full Health. Your Abilities and Talents don't do damage while dead, but will still heal you for 50% of their normal amount, causing you to cheat death.

Undying Icon Undying causes Leoric to turn into a Ghost the moment he dies. While in Ghost form, Leoric is healing for 12.5% of his maximum Health per second. He is also able to use two Basic Abilities, Ghastly Swing Icon Ghastly Swing to slow enemy Heroes, and Drain Essence Icon Drain Essence to cheat death in order to accelerate his healing process. Once Leoric's Ghost has reached full health, he comes back to life at its current location. Healing and regeneration effects that work while Undying is still active, such as Reanimation Icon Reanimation or Ossein Renewal Icon Ossein Renewal, can accelerate Leoric's resurrection process.

Undying is a very unique trait which allows Leoric to have an impact on events even after dying in combat. Although Leoric cannot damage his foes while in Ghost form, he is still capable of using Ghastly Swing to slow them and applying Drain Essence on them to resurrect faster. We strongly recommend using these two abilities whenever they are off cooldown in order to be as useful to your team as possible until you have come back to life again.

Another important aspect of Undying is the fact that it provides your teammates with vision, as you can freely move your Ghost around the map in order to scout the enemy team's position. Keep in mind, however, that Leoric will materialise at the Ghost's current location once its health is fully recovered. Thus, when dying as Leoric, it is of utmost importance to constantly keep an eye on your Ghost's health bar in order to avoid respawning in the midst of opposing team members.

7. Ghastly Swing

Leoric Ghastly Swing
Ghastly Swing (Q) Diablo Leoric
  • Cooldown: 8 seconds

Swing in front of you to slow enemies by 40% for 2.5 seconds.

Ghastly Swing Icon Ghastly Swing causes Leoric to take a swing at nearby enemies in front of him, slowing their movement speed by 40% for 2.5 seconds. This ability can only be used during Undying Icon Undying.

Ghastly Swing is one of the two Basic Abilities Leoric is able to use while in Ghost form. Although it does not deal any damage to your enemies, its movement speed slow is still very useful to influence a team fight even after dying in combat. Do not hesitate to use this ability whenever it is off-cooldown and use it to slow down the enemy team's advance or retreat. Keep in mind that Ghastly Swing benefits from the Consume Vitality Icon Consume Vitality talent at Level 13 which allows you to resurrect significantly faster.

8. Drain Essence

Leoric Drain Essence
Drain Essence (W) Diablo Leoric
  • Cooldown: 11 seconds

Throw out a chain, attaching to the first enemy Hero hit healing you for up to 12.5% of your maximum Health over 4 seconds as long as you remain close to the enemy. You drain more essence the longer you remain connected.

Drain Essence Icon Drain Essence causes Leoric to grab an enemy Hero's soul, constantly healing himself for a medium amount over 4 seconds as long as his target remains within his reach. The longer Drain Essence stays active the more health it provides. Can only be used while Undying Icon Undying is in effect.

Drain Essence is one of the two Basic Abilities Leoric is able to use while in Ghost form. It works just like Drain Hope Icon Drain Hope, however, it neither damages its target nor slows Leoric's movement speed. Instead, it heals Leoric's Ghost for a medium amount as long as it remains in range of its target. This ability is crucial to accelerate Leoric's resurrection process which is why recommend using it as frequently as possible.
