On this page, you will learn how to optimally play Sonya in a competitive environment in Heroes of the Storm. Everything you need to know is explained, from general gameplay to specific tips and tricks.

About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Rank 1 Flex player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. General Sonya Gameplay

Sonya's frontline role throughout all stages of the game is to:

  • pressure fragile isolated Heroes through strong dueling potential;
  • punish melee Heroes that attack your allies through high sustained damage;
  • initiate team fights with Leap Icon Leap (if Wrath of the Berserker Icon Wrath of the Berserker was not chosen);
  • claim Mercenary Camps when appropriate.

Sonya is a very independent Hero due to her well-rounded ability kit and strong duelling potential, though she works best when accompanied by a tank to initiate for her, or a healer. Still, her strong waveclear, solid sustained sieging, and second-to-none self-sustain, make her a great candidate for solo laning.

Although she is not a tank, Sonya belongs near the enemy frontline due to her melee nature. While her Health pool is very respectable, much of her survivability stems from knowing when to engage — which is typically after a tank has provoked the premature use of important abilities or disabled key targets. Flanking is an important part of playing Sonya, as Ancient Spear Icon Ancient Spear is of limited use as a gap-closer due to its short range.

2. When Not Team Fighting

Sonya is comfortable with handling several different tasks, depending on your team's needs. In general, her strong dueling and pushing potential allow her to dominate 1v1 lanes, take down Structures for additional experience, and safely soak due to Whirlwind Icon Whirlwind's outstanding escape and self-sustain potentials. Make sure to avoid becoming too passive, and rotate to help out your allies wherever you may be needed.

If your team elects to play more aggressively, or already has another good solo laner that does not gank very well (such as E.T.C. or Illidan), Sonya makes for a solid roamer if she is accompanied by anyone else with a reliable source of crowd control. However, Sonya truly shines when she is on Mercenary Camp duty, as she claims them quickly and very safely.

Sonya can solo the Boss Mercenary Camp as early as Hero Level 10, granted that you have the talents recommended in our Mercenary Lord build. The strategy is simple: activate Wrath of the Berserker Icon Wrath of the Berserker, then alternate Seismic Slam Icon Seismic Slam and Basic Attacks, avoiding the Boss's Ground Slam attack, and reengaging it with Ancient Spear Icon Ancient Spear to generate enough Fury to sustain Wrath of the Berserker. The process should take approximately 40 seconds. Be watchful of your Minimap for potential ganks. This is particularly effective if your team reaches Level 10 first, as the threat of Heroic Abilities is often enough to deter opponents from initiating team fights. Just be sure to inform your teammates of your intents.

3. Team Fights

Your main team fighting strategy varies depending on your Heroic Ability choice, but your goals are generally similar to that of a typical Assassin: find and kill key targets.

With Wrath of the Berserker Icon Wrath of the Berserker as a Heroic Ability choice, your ultimate goal is to follow up against whatever gets crowd controled within your range. A simple Ancient Spear Icon Ancient Spear + Seismic Slam Icon Seismic Slam + Basic Attack + Whirlwind Icon Whirlwind ability chain is often enough to outright kill vulnerable or otherwise damaged Heroes while Wrath of the Berserker is active. You can even remain mounted while waiting for an opportunity to deliver your combo. Otherwise, a mix of Seismic Slams and Basic Attacks can deal a large amount of damage to any nearby melee Hero. Just be sure to never overextend, especially before your defensive talents become available.

With Leap Icon Leap as a Heroic ability choice, you forego much of your direct damage for the unique ability to near-instantly stun a large group of enemies from range. Your strategy is then to work with your team so as to combo Leap with other key abilities to dispatch key targets before they can react, receive healing, or otherwise escape. It is usually a good idea to announce your Heroic Ability choice so that your allies know what to expect from you. Leap is particularly good against team compositions that feature two or more ranged Assassins.

4. Summary of Tips and Tricks

  • Wrath of the Berserker Icon Wrath of the Berserker can be maintained almost indefinitely with proper Fury management.
  • Whirlwind Icon Whirlwind heals more the more targets it hits, which is especially good versus Minions.
  • Whirlwind lets you feely move through units; use this to go exactly where you want.
  • Practice hitting Ancient Spear Icon Ancient Spear; it is core to Sonya's effectiveness.
  • Do not draft nor play Sonya as a tank, but rather, as a melee Assassin.
  • Intertwine Seismic Slam Icon Seismic Slam with Basic Attacks for maximum damage output.
