Brawler's Guild: Fjoll (Rank 5) (MoP 5.4)

Fjoll is your second Brawler's Guild Rank 5 opponent. The fight against may initially seem confusing because of the number of void zones on the ground, which you must avoid, and because of Fjoll's main attack, which seems very damaging. In reality, the fight is very simple but requires you to execute it almost perfectly.

Before we delve further into the explanations, we advise you to first watch this very short video, which shows how the fight with Fjoll goes.

1. Abilities and Strategy↑top

Fjoll spends most of his time casting spells. As a consequence of this, he will be mostly stationary. Sometimes, he will pull players out of his range to his location and attempt to melee them, but this is of little concern. The spells Fjoll casts are the following.

  • Dark Barrage Icon Dark Barrage is Fjoll's main nuke. It is channeled for 3 seconds and will damage you 6 times (so every 0.5 second), dealing approximately, 3,500 damage each time.
  • Darkzone Icon Darkzone is sometimes cast by Fjoll. This creates a very large void zone on the ground, at your location. If you are still standing in the void zone after a few seconds, your damage and movement speed will be reduced by 25% for 15 seconds.
  • Shadowy Blast Icon Shadowy Blast is cast a few times during the fight. It deals approximately 65,000 damage to you and knocks you back.

In addition to all this, very damaging shadow void zones will randomly appear and disappear.

As said in the introduction, the fight is very confusing at first, but is actually easy. This feeling is amplified by the size of Fjoll and his apparent strength.

  • Your first priority is to avoid the shadow void zones and move out of them, if they happen to appear at your location.
  • Your second priority is to move out of the Darkzone when it appears. This is very important if you are not over-gearing the fight and are dying to the enrage timer.
  • Your third priority is to mitigate the damage caused by Dark Barrage Icon Dark Barrage.

Other than that, make sure to be prompt to move, if Shadowy Blast knocks you back into a damaging shadow void zone.

If you are a caster, make sure to move away from Fjoll when he pulls you to him.

2. Generic Advice↑top

  • Do not panic. It does not matter if you mess up your rotation, but you need to stick to the strategy.
  • If you are in for a long Brawler's Guild session, you may want to use a flask.
  • Prepot! Use a Potion of Brawler's Might Icon Potion of Brawler's Might, a Potion of Brawler's Cunning Icon Potion of Brawler's Cunning, or a Potion of Brawler's Deftness Icon Potion of Brawler's Deftness right before Fjoll appears, depending on what your main statistic is.
  • When the 60-second cooldown on your potion is over, you can use the same potion again or you can use a Brawler's Healing Potion Icon Brawler's Healing Potion if you need healing.
  • Group up with other players so that you benefit from each other's buffs.

4. Classes We Did The Fight With↑top

4.1. Mage

To deal with Fjoll, we advise you to make use of the following Mage-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

  • Use Ice Barrier Icon Ice Barrier as your Tier 2 talents and always keep it up. Remember that Ice Barrier has a 1-minute duration, but only a 25-second cooldown. So, try to cast it before being teleported into the arena. This way, the cooldown will be over by the time Ice Barrier drops from the damage you take, and you will be able to recast it immediately.
  • Use Cauterize Icon Cauterize as your Tier 4 talent. This will save your life on many occasions. As soon as it procs, use Ice Block Icon Ice Block to remove the DoT effect it leaves on you. If you are using Glyph of Ice Block Icon Glyph of Ice Block, removing Ice Block will cast an instant free Frost Nova Icon Frost Nova and render you immune to spells for 3 seconds, which can be extremely useful.
  • Use Invocation Icon Invocation as your Tier 6 talent, in conjunction with Glyph of Evocation Icon Glyph of Evocation. This will enable you to heal yourself for 40% of your life, on a 10-second cooldown.
  • In addition to Glyph of Evocation Icon Glyph of Evocation, which is nigh-mandatory, and Glyph of Ice Block Icon Glyph of Ice Block, which we have already mentioned, you may find the glyphs listed below useful.
    • If you play Arcane, then Glyph of Arcane Power Icon Glyph of Arcane Power can be very useful for your initial burn phase (in conjunction with your trinkets procs/uses and your potion).
    • If you play Fire, then Glyph of Combustion Icon Glyph of Combustion can be very useful for your initial burn phase (in conjunction with your trinkets procs/uses and your potion).
    • If you play Frost, then Glyph of Water Elemental Icon Glyph of Water Elemental will be very beneficial because it will allow your Water Elemental to cast while moving.

As a Mage, you will need to keep Blink Icon Blink for escaping when Fjoll pulls you to him or when he knocks you back with Shadowy Blast Icon Shadowy Blast.

Other than that, you can mitigate the damage from Dark Barrage Icon Dark Barrage with Ice Barrier Icon Ice Barrier or with Mirror Image Icon Mirror Image. When Mirror Image is up, you should use all your cooldowns to burn the boss.

To regain life, you can use Evocation Icon Evocation right after a Darkzone Icon Darkzone or a Shadowy Blast Icon Shadowy Blast.

4.2. Rogue

To deal with Fjoll, we advise you to make use of the following Rogue-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

As a Rogue, make sure to use Mind-numbing Poison Icon Mind-numbing Poison as your Non-Lethal Poison. It will slow down Fjoll's casts of Dark Barrage Icon Dark Barrage, which means that he will spend more time casting this ability and less time casting his other abilities, which are more difficult to deal with.

Other than that, make sure to useEvasion Icon Evasion or Combat Readiness Icon Combat Readiness when Fjoll pulls you to him. You can also mitigate the damage of Dark Barrage Icon Dark Barrage with Cloak of Shadows Icon Cloak of Shadows.

4.3. Shaman

To deal with Fjoll, we advise you to make use of the following Shaman-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

  • Use Astral Shift Icon Astral Shift as your Tier 1 talent. It will enable you to sometimes reduce the damage you take. Enhancement Shamans can also use Shamanistic Rage Icon Shamanistic Rage for the same purpose.
  • Use Elemental Mastery Icon Elemental Mastery as your Tier 4 talent. Cast it at the beginning of the fight to increase your initial burst damage.
  • Use Ancestral Guidance Icon Ancestral Guidance as your Tier 5 talent. Cast it whenever you are in need of healing.
  • Use Primal Elementalist Icon Primal Elementalist as your Tier 6 talent to further increase your initial damage burst.
  • If you play Enhancement, you may find the glyphs below to be useful.

Fjoll has a large health pool of 4M. Your burst damage should enable you to take him down rapidly, but you will still need to contend with his abilities. None of them is deadly, so simply make sure to get out of void zones of all kinds and you should be safe.

If you need to heal yourself, wait until after Fjoll casts Shadowy Blast Icon Shadowy Blast or Darkzone Icon Darkzone.

4.4. Warlock

To deal with Fjoll, we advise you to make use of the following Warlock-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

  • For self-healing and survival purposes, you should use Soul Leech Icon Soul Leech as your Tier 2 talent and Glyph of Siphon Life Icon Glyph of Siphon Life. Soul Leech will cause your main spells to give you large shields for a fraction of the damage they deal, while Glyph of Siphon Life will cause Corruption Icon Corruption (Affliction/Demonology) or Immolate Icon Immolate (Destruction) to heal you for a percentage of the damage it deals.
  • Dark Bargain Icon Dark Bargain is an extremely useful ability and your best option for your Tier 4 talent. Always try to use it at the end of the fight, if you need a few extra seconds to kill your opponent. Note that when Dark Bargain runs out, you will often die from the damage that it has prevented you from taking.
  • Use Grimoire of Supremacy Icon Grimoire of Supremacy as your Tier 5 talent. This way, you can use your Voidlord to make the fight trivial.
  • Kil'jaeden's Cunning Icon Kil'jaeden's Cunning will prove invaluable as a Tier 6 talent, as it allows you to use all your spells while moving.
  • In addition to Glyph of Siphon Life Icon Glyph of Siphon Life, which is mandatory, you may find the glyphs listed below useful.
    • Glyph of Healthstone Icon Glyph of Healthstone increases the healing from your Healthstone, but this increased healing is done over 10 seconds. You should try to use your improved Healthstone when you have taken about 30% of your health as damage. This will help you make the fight last longer, giving you more time to kill your opponent.

Your Voidlord will once again come in handy. It will easily tank the boss for most of the fight. If it dies you can revive it.

If a void zone spawns at your location, simply move out of it.
