Brawler's Guild: Leona Earthwind (Rank 4) (MoP 5.4)

Leona Earthwind is your second Brawler's Guild Rank 4 opponent. The fight against her will require you to quickly dispose of adds she spawns. Classes with weak AoE abilities are at a clear disadvantage here. Before we delve further into the explanations, we advise you to first watch this very short video, which shows how the fight with Leona Earthwind goes.

1. Abilities and Strategy↑top

Leona Earthwind has three abilities.

  • Wrath Icon Wrath deals between 50k and 60k Nature damage.
  • Solar Beam Icon Solar Beam summons a beam of light at your location. If you cast a spell while standing in this beam, you will be silenced for a few seconds.
  • Earthliving Seed Icon Earthliving Seed summons 3 Earthliving Sprouts. These adds chase you and deal 40k damage per hit with their melee attack.

To defeat Leona, you need to interrupt Wrath Icon Wrath as often as possible. Whenever you see a Solar Beam spawning at your location, you need to stop casting and move away from it. Most melee classes can safely ignore the Solar Beam.

The tricky part of the fight is to deal with the adds (the Earthliving Sprouts).

  • Some classes can automatically, or with very little trouble, spread the damage they do to Leona onto the adds. For these classes, the fight will be very easy.
  • Some classes can easily slow, root, stun, or fear the adds. So they can kill Leona while keeping the adds under control.
  • Other classes are missing the proper tools and will need to burn Leona down, all the while trying to survive the damage.

2. Generic Advice↑top

  • Do not panic. It does not matter if you mess up your rotation, but you need to stick to the strategy.
  • If you are in for a long Brawler's Guild session, you may want to use a flask.
  • Prepot! Use a Potion of Brawler's Might Icon Potion of Brawler's Might, a Potion of Brawler's Cunning Icon Potion of Brawler's Cunning, or a Potion of Brawler's Deftness Icon Potion of Brawler's Deftness right before Leona Earthwind appears, depending on what your main statistic is.
  • When the 60-second cooldown on your potion is over, you can use the same potion again or you can use a Brawler's Healing Potion Icon Brawler's Healing Potion if you need healing.
  • Group up with other players so that you benefit from each other's buffs.

Josiah said: As a Frost Death Knight, item level 482, I had no problem with this fight, The main things I would recommend using are Glyph of Anti-Magic Shell Icon Glyph of Anti-Magic Shell, the Anti-Magic Zone Icon Anti-Magic Zone talent for her Wraths, and the Chilblains Icon Chilblains and Remorseless Winter Icon Remorseless Winter talents for the adds. You can Mind Freeze Icon Mind Freeze / Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell or Anti-Magic Zone Icon Anti-Magic Zone most of the Wraths that she casts and the adds have about 50k HP so they don't even need to be single targeted, just toss out a few Howling Blast Icon Howling Blasts and they go down no problem. Move from the solar beams and you should really have no problem. It took me about 40 seconds roughly to kill her, having pre-potted with a Potion of Brawler's Might Icon Potion of Brawler's Might. I hope this helps.

7. Mage↑top

To deal with Leona Earthwind, we advise you to make use of the following Mage-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

  • If you play Fire, you may want to use Scorch Icon Scorch as your Tier 1 talent. You will be able to use it while moving and it can proc Heating Up Icon Heating Up or transform it into Pyroblast! Icon Pyroblast!.
  • Use Ice Barrier Icon Ice Barrier as your Tier 2 talents and always keep it up. Remember that Ice Barrier has a 1-minute duration, but only a 25-second cooldown. So, try to cast it before being teleported into the arena. This way, the cooldown will be over by the time Ice Barrier drops from the damage you take, and you will be able to recast it immediately.
  • Use Cauterize Icon Cauterize as your Tier 4 talent. This will save your life on many occasions. As soon as it procs, use Ice Block Icon Ice Block to remove the DoT effect it leaves on you. If you are using Glyph of Ice Block Icon Glyph of Ice Block, removing Ice Block will cast an instant free Frost Nova Icon Frost Nova and render you immune to spells for 3 seconds, which can be extremely useful.
  • Frost Bomb Icon Frost Bomb is the key of the fight and you should take it as a Tier 5 talent.
  • Use Invocation Icon Invocation as your Tier 6 talent, in conjunction with Glyph of Evocation Icon Glyph of Evocation. This will enable you to heal yourself for 40% of your life, on a 10-second cooldown.
  • In addition to Glyph of Evocation Icon Glyph of Evocation, which is nigh-mandatory, and Glyph of Ice Block Icon Glyph of Ice Block, which we have already mentioned, you may find the glyphs listed below useful.
    • If you play Arcane, then Glyph of Arcane Power Icon Glyph of Arcane Power can be very useful for your initial burn phase (in conjunction with your trinkets procs/uses and your potion).
    • If you play Fire, then Glyph of Combustion Icon Glyph of Combustion can be very useful for your initial burn phase (in conjunction with your trinkets procs/uses and your potion).
    • Glyph of Frost Nova Icon Glyph of Frost Nova reduces the cooldown of Frost Nova Icon Frost Nova, which can be very beneficial if you often find yourself in need of healing and need to root your opponent to cast Evocation Icon Evocation.
    • If you play Arcane, then Glyph of Slow Icon Glyph of Slow will cause the boss to be almost always slowed, giving you previous seconds to cast Evocation Icon Evocation or damage your opponent without getting hit.
    • If you play Frost, then Glyph of Water Elemental Icon Glyph of Water Elemental will be very beneficial because it will allow your Water Elemental to cast while moving.

To defeat Leona, simply make sure to time your casts of Frost Bomb Icon Frost Bomb in such a way that it detonates just as the adds are spawning. It will instantly kill them.

You also need to make sure that Solar Beam Icon Solar Beam does not silence you because this will prevent you from casting Frost Bomb Icon Frost Bomb, which can be problematic.

Use Frost Nova Icon Frost Nova and Blink Icon Blink to get away, if you run into trouble.

9. Paladin↑top

Some of our readers shared their experience of the fight, as a Paladin, in our forums, and we decided to reproduce their contribution(s) here.

Ivresse said for Retribution Paladins: What I did it is to go full on burst at the beginning to get Leona's health down as much as possible, as well as stun with a Fist of Justice Icon Fist of Justice a few seconds from the beginning so it gives you a bit more time to burst her down before she starts summoning the adds. Make sure to move out of the solar beam the moment it appears.

As soon as the adds start spawning, start moving backwards and attack the buggers with ranged Judgment Icon Judgments and Exorcism Icon Exorcisms, with a Templar's Verdict Icon Templar's Verdict to finish them off when they get too close. The adds have very little health and will die after a few hits. Just make sure to keep distance away from them instead of fighting them in full on melee.

Once they die, switch back to Leona and hurt her some more before switching back to the adds, using Fist of Justice Icon Fist of Justice where possible, before switching back to the adds when they spawn.

Tanek said for Retribution Paladins: I recommend a build of 213223. Most of the talent options can be interchanged but this is my preferred method and makes good use of the burst that Rets have available. Remember that with a 2 minute enrage timer the T14 4 set bonus will not help, so if you have other pieces that have better itemization use them instead. The 2 set bonus is still beneficial if you have it.

As is the case with most fights in the brawlers guild you will be attacking the boss from the front a majority of the time which means being hit capped and expertise capped (up to the hard cap) is the best way to improve DPS.

Use Sacred Shield Icon Sacred Shield before the boss spawns to get the shield rolling. Keep Rebuke Icon Rebuke handy to interrupt Wrath. Save Fist of Justice Icon Fist of Justice for when she starts casting Earthliving Seed. Use Blinding Light Icon Blinding Light to interrupt her second Earthliving Seed cast and if she is still alive long enough to cast a third time Fist of Justice Icon Fist of Justice should be back up. If she does manage to sprout her Earthliving Seeds use Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm and Hammer of the Righteous Icon Hammer of the Righteous (both for damage reduction and AoE damage). I would leave Divine Protection Icon Divine Protection unglyphed as Rebuke will not be up often enough to stop all of her Wrath casts. Glyph of Templar's Verdict Icon Glyph of Templar's Verdict is great for damage mitigation. I would also recommend using Glyph of Blinding Light Icon Glyph of Blinding Light as unglyphed it breaks on damage and the knock down acts as a stun.

10. Priest↑top

Some of our readers shared their experience of the fight, as a Priest, in our forums, and we decided to reproduce their contribution(s) here.

Anisah said for Shadow Priests: I've tried to burn her down (item level 488). And I end taking way too much damage.

Tried to kite. Leona casts, so I lose HP faster than I DPS her, nevermind the adds, eventually they catch me due to the huge amount of them.

Tried to interrupt. Sometimes Psychic Horror Icon Psychic Horror or Psychic Scream Icon Psychic Scream just wouldn't stick on her, just have to pray on this one...

Tried to burn adds down. Shadow Word: Pain Icon Shadow Word: Pain works perfectly fine if you switch fast enough between them and take large amounts of health from adds, you just need to keep an eye on your HP wich goes down like crazy.

Tried my best, still no win but I guess CC/fear Leona while casting Earthliving Seed, if fear doesn't pull the trick, DoT the adds with Shadow Word: Pain Icon Shadow Word: Pain quickly, if skilled, even throw some Shadow Word: Death Icon Shadow Word: Death. And of course, don't forget your Mindbender Icon Mindbender and Fade Icon Fade so you let him tank for you!

Michael said: I am a 470 geared Shadow Priest and I finally beat her tonight. I figured out that if you hit her with a fear effect just as she completes her everliving seed cast you can manage to make it where she doesn't actually get any of the adds out. Basically I used Psychic Scream Icon Psychic Scream for the first, Psychic Horror Icon Psychic Horror for the second, Psychic Scream Icon Psychic Scream again for the third, my fear pet for the fourth, and Psychic Scream Icon Psychic Scream for the fifth. If you can execute the fear perfectly successive times in a row without being silenced when you need to use them then you should be able to win.

One thing of note... if you fear her to early in her cast when fear breaks she will almost immediately begin the cast again.

11. Rogue↑top

To deal with Leona Earthwind, we advise you to make use of the following Rogue-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

For this fight, we heavily recommend using Combat. Blade Flurry Icon Blade Flurry will dispose of the adds automatically, allowing you to focus on Leona all the time. The adds will still live for a short amount of time, so make sure to use Evasion Icon Evasion and Combat Readiness Icon Combat Readiness to mitigate the damage from their melee attacks.

We do not advise to use Subtlety for the Brawler's Guild, as you will not be able to use Backstab Icon Backstab, your main damaging ability.

12. Shaman↑top

To deal with Leona Earthwind, we advise you to make use of the following Shaman-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

For both Elemental and Enhancement Shamans, the fight will require you to use Chain Lightning Icon Chain Lightning on Leona as soon as the adds spawn. Doing so will allow you to rapidly dispose of them and limit the amount of damage that they will deal to you. Make sure to also move out of the Solar Beam Icon Solar Beam as soon as it appears. If you get silenced, you will not be able to heal yourself or kill the adds.

Enhancement Shamans can also use Fire Nova Icon Fire Nova to kill the adds, once Lava Lash Icon Lava Lash has spread Flame Shock Icon Flame Shock.

13. Warlock↑top

To deal with Leona Earthwind, we advise you to make use of the following Warlock-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

  • For self-healing and survival purposes, you should use Soul Leech Icon Soul Leech as your Tier 2 talent and Glyph of Siphon Life Icon Glyph of Siphon Life. Soul Leech will cause your main spells to give you large shields for a fraction of the damage they deal, while Glyph of Siphon Life will cause Corruption Icon Corruption (Affliction/Demonology) or Immolate Icon Immolate (Destruction) to heal you for a percentage of the damage it deals.
  • Use Howl of Terror Icon Howl of Terror as your Tier 2 talent. It will come handy towards the end of the fight.
  • Dark Bargain Icon Dark Bargain is an extremely useful ability and your best option for your Tier 4 talent. Always try to use it at the end of the fight, if you need a few extra seconds to kill your opponent. Note that when Dark Bargain runs out, you will often die from the damage that it has prevented you from taking.
  • Use Grimoire of Supremacy Icon Grimoire of Supremacy as your Tier 5 talent. This way, you can use your Voidlord to make the fight trivial.
  • Kil'jaeden's Cunning Icon Kil'jaeden's Cunning will prove invaluable as a Tier 6 talent, as it allows you to use all your spells while moving.
  • In addition to Glyph of Siphon Life Icon Glyph of Siphon Life, which is mandatory, you may find the glyphs listed below useful.
    • Glyph of Healthstone Icon Glyph of Healthstone increases the healing from your Healthstone, but this increased healing is done over 10 seconds. You should try to use your improved Healthstone when you have taken about 30% of your health as damage. This will help you make the fight last longer, giving you more time to kill your opponent.
    • Glyph of Demon Training Icon Glyph of Demon Training will be useful to allow your Voidlord to survive longer against Leona and the adds.

While Warlock have very good AoE capabilities, they need some time to set it up. Unfortunately, the adds will not give you that time. What we advise you to do is to use your Voidlord. When it dies, revive it. After your Voidlord's second death, use Howl of Terror Icon Howl of Terror to send Leona and the adds as far away from you as possible. Then start attacking Leona again and finish the fight with Dark Bargain Icon Dark Bargain up.

You will need to use all your offensive cooldowns at the beginning of the fight, including your Doomguard. This will allow you to burn Leona without being distracted by the adds.

14. Warrior↑top

Some of our readers shared their experience of the fight, as a Warrior, in our forums, and we decided to reproduce their contribution(s) here.

Soulrupture said: I just did this fight as a Fury Warrior (single-minded). All I did was make a macro with all CDs (Recklessness Icon Recklessness, Skull Banner Icon Skull Banner, Avatar Icon Avatar) and burned her down. When the adds got kinda crazy I feared them and kept burning, but when they come back you should use Rallying Cry Icon Rallying Cry and/or Die by the Sword Icon Die by the Sword. Hopefully she's dead by then. If you have to, Whirlwind Icon Whirlwind the adds down and make sure you use Impending Victory Icon Impending Victory for the nice battle heal. Don't forget about the Arena potions!!!
