Welcome to our Amon the Forgeknight Leveling Build! During your leveling journey, Borderlands 4’s skill trees can be intimidating to interact with at first. The following guide details a setup designed to work at any stage of the campaign, without requiring any particular gear.

Leveling and experiencing the game for the first time is an individual process where discovery and experimentation is encouraged. This build is designed to accompany players regardless of their approach and speed.

Strengths
  • Short cooldown abilities that trigger several effects
  • Safe mobbing with freezing axes
  • Does not require specific weapons, class mods or shields.
Weaknesses
  • Requires certain Underbarrel Attachments to maximize damage against bosses

Quick Navigation

Skill Overview and Playstyle

Amon’s Crucible action skill is the cornerstone of the build. This is an axe throw on a short cooldown that can freeze enemies and trigger multiple different skill effects.

The high uptime and crowd control of his kit enable fast paced and aggressive gameplay during mobbing.

Skill Point, Augment, and Capstone Order

The following skill order prioritizes quality of life and immediate power gains in order to offer a smooth leveling experience.

The focus is to raise the frequency of Crucible and Double-Edge skill casts that will then trigger several buffs such as Bellows, Blast Furnace, Gut Punch, Forged in Steel and Berserk.

Opting out of Crucible capstones to grab more points in the Calamity tree is a valid choice. After rushing for Searing Cold there is a certain degree of flexibility in the sequence, especially if you prefer offensive power over defense and stability.

Strategy

Early Game (0-15 Skill Points)

The early goal is to reach the Searing Cold augment as quickly as possible. The guaranteed freeze allows you to disable dangerous targets and net easy critical shots. Cast Iron cooldown rate and gun handling enable faster quick swaps with underbarrel weapons to deal with bosses.

Mid Game (16-25 Skill Points)

Mid game is where we start to spend points in the Calamity tree to add more survivability with Gut Punch and Heavy Plate. By now the gameplay loop is focused around almost exclusively using the Cryo Axe for mobbing as a mean to freeze targets, followed by Double-Edge for extra damage. Incendiary Axe is worth casting for damage on red and yellow bar bosses.

Late Game (26+ Skill Points)

The late section is when we path to reach Forged in Steel and then Berserk for invulnerability and additional elemental damage. The last ten points are then spent in the Cybernetics tree for additional damage and to create Cryo Hazards.

Teamplay

This setup plays similarly in single players and team environments. In group play, there might be merit in going for earlier Permafrost and Blast Furnace over your individual safety.

Gun and Gear Priority

Personal preference and your best available drops will generally dictate your leveling journey.

That said, the following list can help you guide your gearing process:

  • A loadout of your favorite mobbing weapon (preferably Cryo or Kinetic), and 3 underbarrel attachment weapons will work in any situation.
  • Matching elemental weakness is important, but thanks to the extra Cryo and Shock damage from talents you can make due even with suboptimal setups.
  • Underbarrel attachments like Taser, Shotgun, and Spread Launcher are extremely potent boss killer tools, and require no License Part combination, unlike Energy Disc with Jakobs
  • Ordnance is complementary to the build: Lingering Payload Ripper grenades are good for mobbing, while Tediore Satchels are very usable thanks to the guaranteed freeze from axes.
  • Firewerks is a good option early game, but defensive shields offer room for mistakes, particularly against bosses.
  • Look out for Stormcaller, Outlaw and Guardian class mods, alongside cooldown reduction.
  • Pay attention to repkits with the Accelerator perk.

Quick Tips

  • Amon’s defenses are tied to Action Skills and his Forgeskill. Use your abilities when in a tough spot!
  • Cryo Axe is an excellent single target disable option; Permafrost makes it an area denial tool as well.
  • Consider Incendiary Axe on bosses with Blue or Red health bars.
  • Mobility in combat with slides, air dashes and glides, to extend momentum, is an important and fun tool to survive.
