Borderlands 4 Surpasses Borderlands 3’s Steam Peak

Just a few days after release, Borderlands 4 recorded an all-time peak of 304,398 concurrent players on Steam. That puts it among the platform’s biggest launches this year and shows that the series still draws huge crowds.

Current Player Numbers

Right now, the hype has not cooled off completely either. At the time of writing, more than 138,248 Vault Hunters are online, with a 24-hour peak of 229,324. Sure, that is lower than the launch weekend frenzy, but it shows steady momentum instead of a quick drop-off.

For some context, Borderlands 3 peaked at around 250,000 concurrent players on Steam back in 2020. Borderlands 4 has already passed that milestone, and it did so despite plenty of chatter around performance problems and Randy Pitchford’s usual controversial comments.

What Is Next for Borderlands 4

The real test for Borderlands 4 is not just hitting a big launch peak, but keeping people playing once the honeymoon phase is over. Right now, Gearbox is pushing out stability patches to deal with the PC headaches, which is going to be important if they want to stop frustrated players from dropping off early.

Beyond that, the roadmap already hints at in-game events, new Vault Hunters, and more story content. That could be enough to keep the hype going, especially if the fixes land quickly and the game feels smoother week by week.

For now, though, the numbers speak for themselves; Borderlands 4 had one of the biggest Steam debuts of the year, beating Borderlands 3 without much trouble. If Gearbox can ride that wave and keep the momentum alive, we might be looking at the strongest entry the series has had in years.
