Vend of the Line is a lucrative non-repeatable Borderlands 4 Side Mission found in the Carcadia Burn zone. The Mission offers one of the few ways to consistently get your hands on a piece of Legendary equipment, and is a perfect opportunity if you want to to bolster your firepower or are simply looking for ways to finding a specific Legendary piece of equipment.
Where to Start?
The Side Mission can be picked up on the west side of the Carcadia town near a vending machine, where Penelope Streams reports on the hunt for the legendary vending machine. Before beginning the side mission you should make sure to have the following pieces of equipment in your backpack:
- Two green pieces of equipment,
- Two blue pieces,
- Two purple pieces (epic),
- One orange piece (legendary).
You will be asked to trade in some of these items throughout the quest, but don’t worry, none of these items will be lost during the mission as you can buy them back immediately after completing each step of the scavenger hunt.
Once you are ready, proceed to talk to Penelope Streams to begin the Side Mission
Puzzle 1: Carcadia Town Vending Machine
After you’ve spoken to Penelope, talk to the “Vault Gatherer” to learn some information about the markings you may have already noticed on the back of certain vending machines. These are actually clues to finding the legendary vending machine! You can inspect the back of the nearby vending machine to learn how to proceed.
Following the instructions on the back of the machine, you quickly realize that it wants you to sell two green-quality items followed by two blue-quality items in order to unlock the first piece of the puzzle. If the items you sold are important to you, or you do not have spare items for the subsequent steps, make sure to buy back the items from the vending machine before moving on!
After the vending machine has revealed the first piece of the puzzle to you, three new vending machines will be revealed on the map for you to seek out and solve their puzzles. Proceed to the small island south west of Carcadia City to find the next vending machine.
Puzzle 2: Carcadia Outskirts Vending Machine
Once you arrive at the next vending machine, you will find that it is powered down. Climb on top of the roof of the building and turn off the jukebox in order to repair it.
After powering it back up again, look through the slit in the wall behind it in order to reveal the next part of the puzzle.
Unlike the previous one, this machine requires you to buy items from it, instead of selling your own. Unfortunately, it does not have any stock itself, so in order to satisfy its requirements, you will have to sell your gear and then buy it back in the specified order..
First, sell and buy back one green piece of gear, then do the same with one purple (epic) piece of gear, then with one blue equipment piece, and finally one more green one.
Once complete head south-east to Crumblehall for the next vending machine.
Puzzle 3: Crumblehall Vending Machine
Instead of series of colored cash symbols, the Crumblehall vending machine features two arrows for you to investigate and follow instead. While the arrows appear to be pointing north you’ll notice that it has fallen over, meaning the arrows are actually pointing directly above.
Once you climb the building to follow the arrows, you will quickly find another arrow pointing to the west side of the building and subsequently reach the final clue for this puzzle that aims at a small slit in the wall: Your next clue!
Looks like this vending machine requires one purple, one blue, and two Legendary items to be sold. Lucky for you, the unfortunate soul currently trapped underneath the machine is willing to do the work for you, and will provide the secret code of the puzzle without you having to sell two of your coveted Legendary pieces yourself. Yay!
Puzzle 4: Embracer’s Bluff Vending Machine
For the final vending machine head south to Embracer’s Bluff by fast-traveling to the Makeshift Chalet Safehouse in Lopside. Once you reach the machine, you will find a disgruntled customer struggling to make the vending machine work. Melee the machine in order to break down the wall behind it and reveal the machine’s hint.
You’ll have to get rid of the customer first, so shoot the machine, or melee the customer, based on your moral compass, to move them out of the way. Proceed to sell one green, one purple, one blue, and one more purple item to the machine to reveal the final piece of the code from the machine. Remember to buy back your items if needed before moving on!
Puzzle 5: Dusty Dangler Vending Machine
After you have received the information from every previous vending machine, you will be provided with coordinates leading to The Dusty Dangler. Head to the location either by jumping east of Carcadia or make your own way there and clear out all the Rippers in the area.
Once the area is clear you will find a vending machine in the center of the area with one final clue.
Use the machine and proceed to sell one green, one blue, one purple, and one orange Legendary. This will power up a wire that will lead you to the final location. Don’t let the machine keep your valuable Legendary item by buying it back before moving to the final step of your journey!
The Legendary Vending Machine
Proceed to follow the wire under the area to reveal a hidden door. You will find some of the “Vault Gatherers” have beaten you to it already. By following the subsequent tunnel, you will finally reveal the legendary vending machine, which will attack you upon interacting with it!
Once you have taken down the mutinous machine, you can finally interact with it to claim your prize.
The machine will provide a random selection of eight Legendary items that have a price tag of just 1 cash. You will only be able to purchase one of the items so choose carefully as this is the primary reward for the Side Mission!
Make sure to not sell any items to this machine as this will also consume your ability to use it!
Once you have made your purchase from the machine, a short dialogue will play, and you will receive your other experience and item rewards. Side Mission complete, and Legendary acquired!
