Akkhan Holy Shotgun Crusader BiS Gear, Gems, and Paragon Points
Below, we detail the items and gems that you should use for your Akkhan Holy Shotgun Crusader in Diablo 3 and why. We also list your paragon points and Kanai's Cube items. Updated for patch 2.6.4 and Season 16.
1. Best in Slot Gear and Alternatives
Like any Akkhan-based build, you will be striving to reach a 56% CDR breakpoint in order to achieve permanence of the Akarat's Champion buff. Note that in this build, you will be using Gogok of Swiftness as one of your Legendary Gems, allowing you to lose CDR rolls from two major slots — ideally weapon and belt — in favor of other offense stats. You will be equipping all six core Akkhan armor pieces, losing the Talisman of Akkhan in favor of the Endless Walk set, as discussed below. Cooldown Reduction takes priority on the slots where you can get it — certainly on the Gauntlets of Akkhan, where it accompanies the Crit stats, as well as on the Pauldrons of Akkhan. The Pauldrons of Akkhan and Breastplate of Akkhan will also host Heaven's Fury skill damage rolls, augmenting your main damage dealer. The Helm of Akkhan, Cuisses of Akkhan and Sabatons of Akkhan should be largely dedicated to high toughness stats.

Taking enough pieces to obtain the 6-piece bonus of the Akkhan set naturally opens a powerful offensive combo in the jewelry. One of the 2.4 reworks, the Endless Walk set — The Compass Rose ring and The Traveler's Pledge amulet — adds a unique mechanic that slowly increases your damage by up to a 100% if you remain stationary, and drains it away and increases your damage reduction while moving. This dynamic fits the playstyle, which alternates Flash-powered bursts of scouting with stationary Punish and Heaven's Fury spam.
The remaining ring slot will be taken by Justice Lantern, whose unique stat Block Chance is now enhanced by a legendary property that reduces incoming damage by up to 55% of your Block Chance. The independence of the damage reduction mechanic from followers and the tie-in with the set bonuses and Ivory Tower make it superior to Unity.
The best-in-slot belt for the build when pushing Greater Rifts is the glass cannon favorite, The Witching Hour. What this belt lacks in unique properties, it makes up in unique rolls: it is the only item in the slot that can roll Attack Speed and Critical Damage. Both stats are immensely beneficial to your damage output, so seek as close to the maximum 7 IAS and 50 Crit Damage as you can.
The remaining item slots — bracers, weapon and offhand — will be occupied by dedicated Heaven's Fury legendary items that increase the skill's damage and modify its properties in a beneficial way. In your wrist slot, Bracer of Fury will augment your main damage dealer against targets affected by a hard crowd control effect. Fate of the Fell will not only provide a general boost to the skill, but will add two extra rays, producing the signature shotgun effect. Finally, you have two crucial shields in the build, Ivory Tower and Shield of Fury, the better of which will be worn and the worse — cubed. Shield of Fury is ideally worn, since it is a dedicated Crusader shield, and can roll vital Cooldown Reduction and skill damage rolls; unlike Ivory Tower, which is classified as a standard Shield despite its Crusader-specific affix. However Shield of Fury with the ideal stats and a maximized unique property (30% damage increase to Heaven's Fury per hit) being very hard to attain, it is more than likely that you should wear an Ivory Tower (and its fixed legendary power) for a long, long time.
1.1. Season 16 Adjustments
During Season 16 (and in seasonal play only), you will be getting the benefits of Ring of Royal Grandeur passively, without the need to wear it. For the Akkhan Holy Shotgun Crusader, this allows you to ease Cooldown Reduction requirements on individual gear pieces.
You are able to drop one of the main Akkhan armor pieces, the Helm of Akkhan, and replace it with a Leoric's Crown. This legendary helm has the potential to double the value of gems slotted in it; when coupled with a Flawless Royal Diamond, it shaves off a significant chunk of your 56% Cooldown Reduction requirement for a permanent Akarat's Champion (the basis of a proper Akkhan build). In turn, this allows you to drop two more Cooldown Reduction rolls from gear — i.e. your shoulders and gloves — and replace them with pure offense stats like Area Damage.
2. Paragon Points
Bane of the Trapped is a potent source of additional damage, as it is its own multiplier in your total damage calculation. The gem procs itself with its level 25 property when in range and is otherwise triggered by Judgment, making it an inseparable part of this melee range setup.
Gogok of Swiftness synergises well with the build in Greater Rift pushes, indirectly providing you with more cooldown resets and improved healing through your faster attacks. The 2.4.1 addition of scaling Dodge chance to the gem is just survivability icing on the cake.
Free from the omnipresence of Bane of the Stricken due to Shield of Fury fulfilling the same role (but better), the Holy Shotgun Crusader is able to take extra tankyness in the build. With its scaling elemental resistances offering the perfect counterpart to the Crusader's naturally strong Armor, Esoteric Alteration is easily your strongest mitigation option. The gem is a very welcome addition to a build whose approach to combat is taking as many hits to the face as possible.

4. Kanai's Cube
Aquila Cuirass cuts incoming damage in half if you maintain above 90% of your resource, which is a permanent effect in a build without a Wrath spending attack.
While stored in the Cube, Convention of Elements will provide a massive bonus to your main damage skill at regular intervals, as it rotates through all elements available to Crusaders and eventually reaches Holy.
