What is the Fishing Derby?

The Fishing Derby began two years ago during the cloud data center stress test, wherein players were given a Lv80 character and 50 million gil to play around with and help the development team assess the addition of a cloud data center. The Fishcord took this opportunity as a challenge: how many fish could the community net during this week-long period.

This event was a massive success, hooking players across Eorzea and turning the Fishing Derby into an annual tradition. Each year, the fin-tastic community continues to scale up the fun with exciting challenges, point systems and creative twists. For example, last year had specific limitations on what bait could be used.

The Fishing Derby is best explained through YouTuber of all things fishy, announcer of the Fishcord Fishing Derby and owner of the Eorzean Aquarium, Fruity Snacks:

It’s a 10 day long in-game (FFXIV) fishing event where the FFXIV Fishing community is challenged to catch as many fish as possible off a unique fishing log which I create under specific conditions and restrictions. The goal is to complete the fishing log in the 10 days based on a specific condition that I’ll announce at the start of the event.

Players who want to track which fish they catch during the event can submit the list at the end of the event to be put up for personal scoring. All participants who meet a minimum scoring criteria will get a unique role and role icon here in discord based on how well they did.

Please note, no preparation ahead of the event is required, and only catches made during the event will count towards the event goal. This year there is no limitation on gear or bait, so if you want to stock up on bait and fully meld you’re gear – please feel free to. Again, preparation will give you no additional advantage this year.

Requirements

To participate in the Fishcord Fishing Derby, players only need to be level 50. This is the level at which players can begin catching Big Fish in A Realm Reborn and can therefore contribute to the community log and also submit fish for personal scoring. Even the smallest fry can contribute in the Fishing Derby, so don’t be koi!

For players new to fishing who want to participate in the Derby but are unsure of when Big Fish become available or how to know their time/weather requirements. I would recommend checking out Carbuncle Plushy. This is a fish tracker app that shows you, in chronological order, what fish are available and when as well as listing the locations and requirements. Additionally, these fish can be filtered by expansion and even pinned making it easier for you to track the fish that specifically fall under the requirements present in this Fishing Derby.

With baited breath, the community awaits more information on the exact conditions of this years Fishing Derby. Make sure to keep an eye on Fruity Snacks’ YouTube channel for the full trailer and announcement!
