The Bastion meta arrives? Including server/game browser, CTF as an official game mode, Mercy, Roadhog, and D.Va changes and individual skill sensitivity options!

The Bastion patch aka Bastion meta has arrived, and it brings with it a lot of other changes as well. The server/game browser is the biggest new addition, featuring an easy way to find custom and (usually) crazy game modes to play. There are also a lot of new individual sensitivity tweaking options for specific hero abilities, as well as a much welcomed change to how point capture works - if there's more attackers than defenders on a point, the defenders will start respawning slower! Capture the Flag is now also a full game mode, getting promoted from a brawl and there's significant changes to Mercy, Roadhog and to a lesser degree, D.Va. Check out the full notes, they're well worth the read:

PATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

New Feature: Game Browser

Starting today, every player can create their own, unique Overwatch experience and share it with their friends, teammates, or the entire world. Introducing the Game Browser.

An extension of Overwatch's Custom Game mode, the Game Browser allows you to adjust the settings on various maps, modes, and heroes to create your own tailor-made match. For example, if you want to increase the speed of Pharah’s rockets or remove the cooldown from McCree's Combat Roll, the power is yours. Once you're happy with your settings, and you're ready to launch your game, you'll need to set up permissions. You can limit the people who can join your game by toggling the "Friends Only" or "Invite Only" options, but if you want to put your strange creation to a real test, set your server to "Public" and click the launch button.

If you'd like to learn more about the Game Browser, click here.

New Mode: Capture the Flag

Capture the Rooster has been, without a doubt, Overwatch’s most popular brawl. We don’t want the excitement to end, so we’re bringing Capture the Flag to the Arcade as an ongoing game mode. Starting today, we’re adding Capture the Flag versions of Nepal, Lijiang Tower, Ilios, and Oasis, which gives you 12 maps to try when creating a Custom Game.

HERO UPDATES

Ana

  • New Hero Option: Nano Boost Sensitivity
    • Allows players to adjust Nano Boost’s targeting sensitivity

Bastion

  • Configuration: Sentry
    • Reconfiguration time decreased from 1.5 seconds to 1.0 second
    • Bullet spread increased by 50%
    • Bullet spread is always at maximum (it no longer increases as the weapon is fired)
    • Magazine size increased from 200 to 300
    • No longer deals critical damage

  • Configuration: Recon
    • Bullet spread decreased by 25%
    • Magazine size increased from 20 to 25

  • Self-Repair
    • Can now be used while moving
    • Now bound to secondary fire (formerly Ability 2)
    • A new resource meter has been added that depletes while Self-Repair is active and recharges when not in use
    • No longer interrupted by taking damage
  • Configuration: Tank
    • No longer grants bonus armor

  • New Passive Ability: Ironclad
    • Bastion takes 35% less damage while in Configuration: Sentry or Tank

Developer Comments: The goal of these changes is to move some of Bastion's power from Configuration: Sentry to Recon, while keeping its sentry mode a strong option, especially versus tanks and barriers. Overall, Bastion should feel stronger and more flexible with these changes.

D.Va

  • Defense Matrix
    • Enemy shots no longer need to travel a minimum distance before they can be blocked

Developer Comments: Previously, there was a minimum distance a projectile had to travel before it could be destroyed by Defense Matrix. This made it nearly worthless in situations where an enemy was right next to your teammate, such as when Roadhog hooks your ally. This change removes that restriction so Defense Matrix should now reliably destroy projectiles regardless of how far they have traveled.

Mei

  • Cryo-Freeze
    • Mei can now be targeted by allies while in Cryo-Freeze

Mercy

  • Resurrect
    • While performing a resurrection, Mercy now becomes temporarily invulnerable along with the allies being revived
  • Caduceus Staff
    • Zenyatta can no longer be targeted when Transcendence is active
  • New Hero Option: Guardian Angel Sensitivity
    • Allows players to adjust Guardian Angel’s targeting sensitivity
  • New Hero Option: Beam Sensitivity
    • Allows players to adjust targeting sensitivity on Mercy’s Caduceus Staff beams

Developer Comments: Mercy’s Resurrect has always been very powerful, but it often forces her to sacrifice herself to use it well. There have been changes in the past that attempted to help her in this area, but haven’t done enough to solve it. This change means that once she uses the ability, she will always survive long enough to be with her team again.

Roadhog

  • Scrap Gun
    • Spread decreased by 20%
  • Chain Hook
    • Targets are now pulled to a location 3.5 meters away, up from 2 meters
    • Cooldown increased from 6 to 8

Developer Comments: The Roadhog changes overall reduce the power of his hook a bit, but his gun is now more effective when not using the hook.

Sombra

  • New Hero Option: Hack Sensitivity
  • Allows players to adjust the targeting sensitivity on Sombra’s Hack ability

Symmetra

  • Sentry Turret
    • [CONSOLE] Damage per second increased from 21 to 25.5

Developer Comments: Back in July, the damage per second from Symmetra’s turrets was reduced by 30 percent. We’ve been keeping an eye on her over the past few months and decided to restore about 15 percent of that damage. On PC, her damage is still 30.

Torbjörn

  • Rivet Gun
    • Ammo is now loaded earlier in the reload animation
  • Build Turret
    • [CONSOLE] Damage increased from 10 to 12

Developer Comments: Like Symmetra, the damage from Torbjörn’s turrets was also reduced by 30 percent in July. After monitoring his effectiveness, we’ve decided to give his turret a small boost, restoring about 15 percent of the damage. By contrast, the damage from Torbjörn’s turret on PC is still 14.

Widowmaker

  • New Hero Option: Grappling Hook Sensitivity
    • Allows players to adjust Grappling Hook’s targeting sensitivity

Winston

  • Critical hit volume reduced by 15%

Developer Comments: Winston's head hit volume was just abnormally big, making him take more damage than he otherwise should. This change brings it more in line with other heroes.

Zarya

  • New Hero Option: Projected Barrier Sensitivity
    • Allows players to adjust Projected Barrier’s targeting sensitivity

Zenyatta

  • New Hero Option: Harmony Orb Sensitivity
    • Allows players to adjust Harmony Orb’s targeting sensitivity
  • New Hero Option: Discord Orb Sensitivity
    • Allows players to adjust Discord Orb’s targeting sensitivity

COMPETITIVE PLAY

General

  •     Skill ratings below 500 will no longer be displayed.

Developer Comments: We’ve noticed that some players have been deliberately throwing their matches in an effort to reach the lowest attainable skill rating. We obviously don’t want to incentivize this behavior, because Competitive Play works best when everybody is trying.

MAP BALANCE CHANGES

General

  • Respawn Delay
    • When attackers outnumber defenders while taking a control point on Assault, Escort and Assault/Escort maps, the defenders’ respawn time will slowly increase until it hits a maximum value or the defense manages to gain the upper hand.

Developer Comments: Until now, stalling an attack by repeatedly throwing yourself at the point has been a common defensive strategy on Assault, Escort and Assault/Escort maps—even when the attackers have a decisive advantage. Typically, this tactic doesn’t change the outcome of battle; it simply delays the attackers’ progress.

Eichenwalde

  • A second gate no longer closes after the payload passes through the castle doors. Instead, rubble from the damaged doorway partially blocks the entrance.

Developer Comments: Once the offensive team gets through the castle entrance, the map becomes very heavily stacked in the defense’s favor. This change will give the offense more entrance options, which should improve the map’s overall balance.

BUG FIXES

General

  • Fixed an audio bug that prevented the point capture sound from increasing in pitch as the capture progressed
  • Fixed an issue preventing key bindings on the communication wheel from displaying properly
  • Fixed a bug causing some key bindings to revert to default after the first round of a Control map
  • Fixed a bug that allowed commendation cards to be recalculated and transferred to a new player after the previous recipient left at the end of a round
  • Fixed a bug that caused the “experience gained” audio effects to continue playing, even after the players left the game lobby
  • Environmental damage to barriers no longer counts toward the "Damage Blocked" statistic

A.I.

  • Fixed a bug that caused Roadhog bot to spin around after hooking a target

Competitive Play

  • Fixed a bug preventing “60 seconds remaining” and “30 seconds remaining” voice lines from playing during the second round of a match

Heroes

  • Fixed a bug preventing Lucio’s “Sound Barriers Provided” statistic from being properly calculated
  • Fixed a bug preventing Reinhardt’s Charge from properly pinning targets
  • Fixed a bug preventing Reinhardt’s shield from displaying cracks at low health with the Wujing skin equipped
  • Fixed a bug that allowed Roadhog to turn freely while pulling a hooked target
  • Fixed an issue that allowed Sombra’s Translocator to become stuck in the air
  • Fixed a bug preventing Tracer’s ”Clock’s Tickin’’ spray from matching the thumbnail in the Hero Gallery

Maps

  • Adjusted the collision in the attacker spawn room on Eichenwalde to prevent players from getting stuck in the pipes
  • Torbjörn can now construct turrets on the stairs in Oasis
  • Fixed an issue that caused Highlight Intros to clip into the roof of a building on Lijang Tower

And, in case you missed it a few weeks ago, here's the detailed version of the server browser explanation:

So I want to say "good attempt Blizzard."  The reason I say attempt is that Bastion now feels too good.  I have played a ton of games as him since the patch has come out and I definately am a killing machine now.  Too good of one.  I might say just ratchet it back a few notches.

The latest holiday event is here and will last through January 1st! Coming with it is the new brawl where players face off against a boss played by another player, Mei's Snowball Offensive from last year's Winter Wonderland returns as well and we get 50 new skins and other cosmetics, as well as last years' ones! There's also improvement for reporting players, and the usual bug fixes, so check out he full patch notes at the bottom.
      Winter Wonderland
      Yeti Hunter
This 6-player brawl sets 5 Meis against one Yeti player who utilizes Winston’s abilities. The Yeti must gather meat to unlock a powerful rage ability adding immunity to freeze and more powerful bonuses. The Meis try to find and eliminate their woolly opponent before he’s consumed enough meat. The Mei players have a new tool in their arsenal, though—a modified “Yeti trap” ultimate ability. Which team will emerge from the snow?
      WINTER WONDERLAND RETURNS
It's the most wonderful time of the year!
Overwatch is getting into the holiday spirit again for the next three weeks! Expand your collection of seasonal-themed items, and enjoy two winter brawls.
This year, we’re celebrating with a new brawl: Yeti Hunter, as well as bringing back Mei’s Snowball Offensive. We’ve decked the halls of Black Forest, King’s Row, and Hanamura. But we know what you really want: presents! Unlock over 50 new seasonal items—including legendary skins like Snow Owl Ana, Rime Sombra, Beachrat Junkrat, and Ice Fisherman Roadhog—alongside winter gear from last year at reduced credit costs.
      Mei’s Snowball Offensive
In this brawl, Mei's Endothermic Blaster has been modified to fire a single, super-powered snowball. Taking down an enemy only requires one hit, but a miss can be costly. Once your weapon is empty search for the nearest snow pile to reload. When the battle starts to heat up, you can activate Mei's Ultimate, which turns her blaster into an automatic snowball launcher, allowing you to fire continuously as your enemies scatter. This year, you play on the Black Forest map as well as Ecopoint: Antarctica.

      Player Warning Updates
Several changes have been made to the player report system.

Ongoing misconduct will result in silence, suspension, or a permanent ban, depending on the severity of the infraction (in severe cases, players may receive their punishment before receiving the initial in-game message).
Players who report someone for poor behavior, resulting in a disciplinary action, will now be notified with an in-game message when the issue has been resolved. We take every report seriously, along with your feedback. Thank you for your patience as we continue to fine tune these systems.

In order to improve matchmaking, Blizzard is planning a couple of changes for Season 8. The first change is limiting the maximum Skill Rating (SR) difference between the highest SR player on a team and the lowest SR player on the same team. The second change is the removal of performance-based matchmaking for Diamond tier players and above.
Don't forget that performance-based matchmaking is coming to Heroes of the Storm next week!
      Blizzard (Source)
Limiting the Skill Rating variance for Teams

With the debut of the new competitive season 8 in January we’re going to be making a few matchmaking changes to increase match quality. The first change is limiting the maximum Skill Rating (SR) difference between the highest SR player on a team and the lowest SR player on the same team. This will especially help players at both the lower and higher limits of SR, where there are typically fewer players available. If a player has an SR of 4500, there are not that many other players who have a similarly high SR. The matchmaker has previously assigned players who are of a much lower SR to the same team as 4500 SR player, and hasn’t always created the best match experience possible.

We implemented the technology for this change in the 1.17.0.3 patch at the end of November, but did not aggressively tune the SR value of the limit. During the month of December we will be quietly testing the effect of more restrictive SR limits to both match quality and queue times. With the data and player feedback from testing, we’ll then come back from our holiday break on January 2 and apply a finalized set of values for Season 8.

Note that the matchmaker will still allow you to group with other players according to the current SR limits at their skill tier, which is 1000 SR for Bronze through Diamond, 500 SR for Master, and 250 for Grandmaster. We recently restricted the SR grouping limit at Grandmaster with this new Season 8 change in mind.

Removing Personal Performance Skill Rating Adjustments for Diamond tier players and above
Ok, this explanation is going to be pretty lengthy, so everyone grab some popcorn and buckle up.

When you win a competitive match of Overwatch, you gain Skill Rating, and when you lose a match you also lose Skill Rating. The amount that you gain or lose is calculated based on many different factors, and here’s a quick list of some of the most important ones:

      • If you have a higher than 50% chance to win a match, you gain less for a win and lose more for a defeat. Conversely, if you were an underdog in a match than you gain more SR when you win and lose less SR when defeated.
      • New players experience both higher gains and higher losses than players who have completed a lot of matches.
      • You gain less SR for a win than you lose for a defeat as you more closely approach the system’s mathematical upper limit 5000 SR. (So at very high SRs you do need a greater than 50% win rate to keep your SR stable.)

There is also another factor in determining the SR change after completing a match, and that’s a measurement of how well you personally performed during the match. If you perform well than you gain more SR when you win, and lose less SR when defeated. The reverse is also true, so if you perform very poorly you gain less SR for a win and lose additional SR when defeated. The personal performance adjustments have been controversial amongst the community for quite some time, especially since the calculations for these adjustments are not at all transparent.

The adjustment does create a lot of positive system wide effects including rewarding players who make the effort to play well, punishing inactive players, and more quickly providing fairer matches for new players or those who decide to play a new hero or role. So we spent quite a lot of time examining data over multiple seasons, checking a lot of math, reading a LOT of community feedback, and then doing some deep soul searching about this. Especially at the higher levels of online competition where every point of SR matters, we want players to not be distracted and worry about how to optimize around the personal performance adjustment. They should just be trying to WIN. So after we get back from the holidays on January 2nd we’re going to turn off the personal performance SR adjustments for players in the Diamond skill tier and above.

We look forward to everyone playing matches and giving us feedback about these changes in Season 8!

The Overwatch League will be starting on January 10 and lasting through June, but the big news for us regular players is that we'll be getting some new skins out of it! Each team in the league has their own skins for each Hero and those will be available to all players, using a new currency - Overwatch League tokens. Every player that logs in within a month of the league's launch will be getting one skin for free, but there are still no details on how exactly we'll be getting these tokens, whether we'll be able to get them with in-game activities or only buying them with real money. What is known is that the money from the skin sales will help the teams themselves and the league, and you can check out more info from League commissioner Nate Nanzer in the video below:
There's going to be a LOT of skins coming, with 12 teams and 26 Heroes each, and redditor fireyREIGN compiled some of them to give you an idea of the team looks:

And an example of a full team's skins -the Florida Mayhem:
