Site crashes and malware ads

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, first of all I love your build guides for WoW and HotS.

As a marketing professional who works with ads all day, I can tell you, you really need to review your ad suppliers. I keep getting auto routed to malware install pages. (Your chrome/phone/computer is infected, install our software to clean it up!) Which then prevent use of the back button to return to your pages. This is extremely frustrating and can be damaging to your users. This happens on both my Android and desktop, and is becoming more frequent. Yours is the only site I visit that does this.

This definitely shouldn't be happening. Is there any information either of you can give about the ads and where/when they occur? Also, if you see them again, try to grab a screenshot of them. It makes identifying them far, far easier.

Hello and thanks for taking the time to report this issue (and for the positive feedback about our content!).

Please accept our apologies for these ads (and for replying two days late, I haven't been browsing the forums much during the holidays and Vlad is on vacation). I need to replicate the issue so I can do a proper report. Could you please tell me from which country/state you are browsing from and which browser you are using? You can send me a private message, if you don't feel comfortable sharing these pieces of information here.

And no need for apologies, I guess. I'm pretty sure it's not your fault :)

We're not indeed directly at fault for this, but it's our website and the least we can do is apologize when people report these ads and do our best to get them removed :)

I've been browsing the site with a proxy in Germany and Chrome/Firefox, but didn't get these ads to show. I'm working on getting the report ad button re-added. The ad agency assured me that with the new 3rd party tools they are using, it was no longer necessary, but it doesn't look to be the case :P

As I said it happened not very often and we all should be able to protect our own systems, but sadly you can't protect against everything and it's just sad with such threats on trusted a beloved sites like this :)

Glad to see an active thread on this topic, as I'm seeing the same issue. Browsing from the US on an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S7). This issue persisted after a factory reset and doesn't occur on any other sites.

Hello Shaddoch! Sorry about that. Can you tell if the redirect always lead to the same page or if it is different every time. If it happens again, could you try to please share the URL you get redirected to.

These ads are really hard to track, but the good news is that Google Chrome is soon going to block them at the browser level: https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/8/16617794/chrome-redirect-blocking-announced-google So there's hope that this will never happen again. For now, all we can do is try and track these ads to ban them.

All the best,

Damien

Thanks for the quick reply, Damien. Screenshot of a redirect is attached. I haven't noticed if it's a different page each time or not, but I'll start monitoring.

Rapid fire ad redirects this morning. Couldn't get to the forums until I installed an ad blocker. Hope these new screenshots are helpful and thanks for the news about Chrome.

Many thanks for the URLs. I've passed them on to the ad agency. Chrome 64 beta (which implements parts of the built-in Chrome adblocker) has rolled out on the Google Play. If you could try it and give me your feedback with it regarding the ads, it would be awesome!

First of all, thanks for all the great build info! Icy-veins is my goto. I'd like to add something to this as well.

My typical process is something like this: Open D3, open icy-veins to whatever build I'm checking to see progress.

Go to D3, check inventory, check gear, etc... come back about 5-10 minutes later to icy veins and chrome has the "Woops! This site has crashed" message. It's not intermittent either, it always does this. I've just learned to hit F5 to refresh the page. I have an overclocked i7 8700K to 5Ghz with 16 GB of Ram.

Anyway, I still love the site. I'm a web developer, and I think it could have to do with the constant ad rotation / downloading. It stays constant at the bottom of the site (waiting for ads.****.com).

EDIT: Picture added, I left the forums open while I crafted gems

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Sorry about the delay, no one notified me of the post and I was away these days. Could you please tell me the exact domain from which things are still loading?

Awesome, thanks a lot for posting this (and our apologies for the continued issues). As I mentioned in several other threads before, we've been at hard work fighting this and our ad agency has been providing us with new tools to combat these ads. Could you please visit this page and fill the form? https://www.icy-veins.com/enthusiast-gaming

All ads on the site are currently sandboxed, logged and monitored, so by filling this form, they will be able to dig through your ad history and find the culprit ad (which is extremely difficult for us to find otherwise).

I just want to report the same here. It started last month and I always get redirected to malware and scam websites just after one minute. When I go back to Icy Veins it does not seem to happen again for a while.
I hope the issue is not too much of a big deal to fight with :) You have an awesome place here for Blizzard Fans.

Did you use the link that Damien gave above to report it as well? It's the fastest way of getting information to the right people to start fixing things. If not, this is the link again:

Thank you for your post and our apologies for this! Did you notice this issue in the past week? We found the culprit partner and banned them, but now we're trying to make sure that these ads are not coming back through another way.

Yes. It happened last week and even right now as I wanted to check out the reply. The website changed to a fake Microsoft page saying I had problems with my PC. Yesterday it was an iPhone giveaway scam. I immediately closed the website as my Avast Antivirus detected and blocked attacks.

I will add screenshots to this specific post if I see the same happening tomorrow or in the following days. but for now I just filled your report sheet.

Edit: As I expected it happened today again. I got redirected to this website that says "Your system is damaged. Please click here to scan and update your system.". It also gives a timer to react to put some pressure on unfortionate victims.

Sorry that it is in German.

Thanks a lot! We're speaking every day to our ad agency about it. It's apparently an issue affecting most of our industry and it's pretty bad. It seems to be coming from every big exchange and every time a fix is deployed, these ads find new ways to bypass filters...

Just found this post so I can add my feedback and disappointment in this happening.  It's a major issue and I don't have this happen on ANY other sites.  What gives?  This has been going on for months.  Sounds like it's time to change your ad provider.

I can't give a whole lot of specifics, but I've seen this more than once. I've had Icy Veins open on the Genji build guide for HotS for no longer than 15 minutes and suddenly, AVG force-minimized my game to let me know it closed my connection to a site with a pretty fishy URL. For the safety of others I'm not going to post it here, but I'll PM it to a staff member if I can get a name and a way to do so (just made an acc for this, idk how)
This must be from Icy Veins as if I hit back on it, it returns to the forum every time. It's happened around four times now, and didn't begin happening until I decided to turn off uBlock for Icy Veins.
Precisely, AVG says: "We've safely aborted connection on {URL} because it was infected with URL:Mal."

For a long time, I've been meaning to write a post explaining our stance on ads and website monetization in general. I just want to make sure everyone (those who will read this, at least) understands why we have ads on the website, how we obtain these ads, how much control we have over them, which ads we accept / do not accept, etc. I also want to say a few words about Ad Blockers and donations.
      Contents:
Why ads on Icy Veins Ads -- How does it all work? What ads do we allow on Icy Veins? How come I still see bad ads? How much control do you really have? How to report an ad? What do you think of Ad Blockers and what do you do against them? What about donations? Conclusion Why ads on Icy Veins?
Vlad and I work full time on this website. We put in as many hours as we would in any other job, if not more, which means that we need to have the same kind of income for us to be able to continue working on the site.
With time, we expanded to other Blizzard games and hired people to help us, because there is only so much we can do with just two people working full time (even if we do receive quite a bit of help from our wonderful crew of moderators).
So, proper monetization of the website is important. To monetize the website only slightly, (for example, so that it pays for its server hosting) is not viable, because it would mean we would need to get full time jobs elsewhere and only work on the website in our spare time. This is something that we cannot do if we wish to maintain the standards of the website.
The easiest way to monetize a website like Icy Veins (with a lot of written content and nothing to sell) is to use ads, which we do. You could say that this is a necessary evil, although I don't think things should be seen this way. Advertising is not a bad thing in itself, but a lot of sites have abusive practices when it comes to ads, with popups and whatnots, which really damage the image people have of online advertising.
There are other ways, like donations (which we tried and were not very successful with; more on that later) or setting up a premium system, where users can pay to remove the ads and get some goodies. Premium systems do work, and in August 2017, we finally released our own. You can subscribe here and it removes all ads and tracking.
Ads -- How does it all work?
We're too small to contact other companies to advertise on our website, so we need an intermediary. Larger (much larger) companies, like curse.com, have sales teams that are dedicated to the task. In our case, we have worked with several reputable ad agencies other the years (Intergi, Playwire, Proper Media, Enthusiat Gaming, etc.). They do all the advertisement-related work and we share the revenues earned on Icy Veins. They negotiate with big companies in the video game industry (Blizzard, Activision, Bioware, Sony, etc.) to sell ad space on the sites they managed (including Icy Veins).
What ads do we allow on Icy Veins?
The ads we allow on Icy Veins are ads that we would not mind seeing on other websites. That is a rather vague and subjective statement, so I will try to clarify things, so that you can decide to contact us if you see something that isn't allowed.
There are two ad formats on the website, 728x90 and 300x250 (these sizes are in pixels). Anything different than this is not allowed and if you see ads that are bigger, then you should definitely notify us. That said, 300x600 ads may occasionally show up in 300x250 ad units, but only on pages where it will not break the design. In addition, the mobile layout also features smaller 320x50 ad units instead of the regular 728x90 ones.
Regarding the content of the ads, we do not accept ads that auto play sound or video, popups, popunders (same as popups, but the ads open up in the background), interstitials (ads that show up before the page you're trying to browse loads). We try to avoid "con" ads, like the ones that tell you that you've won an iPad 2 or that you're the latest lottery winner, but as I'll explain in the next section, that is hard to do. We used to accept video ads, as long as they matched the aforementioned criteria, but we no longer do.
From time to time, there will be website takeovers. When this happens, the background of the website changes and features advertisement. The 728x90 and 300x250 ads will match the content of the background (and sometimes even complement it). You can often see that on most other gaming websites, so that shouldn't be anything new to gamers.
Here, you can see one that we ran on the site for Blizzard during the weeks leading up to release of the Necromancer class in Diablo 3:

How come I still see bad ads? How much control do you really have?
We have very little a priori control and the same goes for the companies we work with directly. The main problem is that the agencies we work with do not have enough ads by themselves to fill all our ad units for every visitor, so they need to complement them with ads they get from Google and other 3rd parties. With these 3rd party advertisers, what we can do is very limited. We can ban ads when we see them on the website or when someone is kind enough to notify us (and even then, they need to describe the ad very very precisely, so that we can find it amongst the millions of ads proposed by these 3rd party networks).
So, there will always be bad ads (like redirects or low quality ads). There are many checks, done at different levels to ensure that the ads are acceptable, but finding every bad ad is a very difficult task. Let me give you an example. A year ago, many MMO websites, including us, were seeing complaints from their users in the Netherlands browsing from mobile devices. These users were being redirected to pornographic websites when arriving on these MMO websites. People seeing the same ad from other countries or from the Netherlands but with a different device were not redirected. It took several weeks to track the ad that was causing that and finally get it removed. That's only one example, but you can see how sneaky people who submit bad ads can be.
      How to report an ad?
Since we will always have bad ads coming up from time to time, it is important to notify us when you see them. See it as a collective effort to keep the internet clean. If a reader of a different website sees a bad ad and reports it, then chances are this bad ad will be banned across all advertisement networks and it will never make it to Icy Veins, and vice versa.
Reporting ads used to be complicated, but now you can simply click the "Report Ad" button beneath the ad.
What do you think of Ad Blockers and what do you do against them?
About 50% of our readers use Ad Blockers to prevent the ads from showing on the website. This certainly means lost revenues, but we don't want to discriminate or take any kind of measure against it. Everyone should do as they feel and if they feel that their browsing experience on Icy Veins is better without ads, then so be it. Every reader is valuable to us, because it's not all about the ads and money. Many people who block the ads do contribute in other ways (forum posts, recommending the website, giving feedback, etc.), and that is totally fine with us.
As a result, we don't do anything against Ad Blockers and don't currently intend to ever do anything against them. We actually try to make the website look good even when Ad Blockers are used. We do show them a message from time to time to remind them that there are other ways they can contribute :)
      What about donations?
Donations are more than welcome We use Paypal and you can find links below for your currency (we only made links for currencies from the countries where we get the most visits from).

USD: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=ZGA8JSAUKTPUA EUR: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=CG2GSWAELN3NL GBP: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=MQH93TF3EC2VA AUD: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=8SEEMZN4HFVD2 CAD: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=U7QV8XYGA8HLQ SEK: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=E7EUPUBSQ3E56 Previously, we had a Paypal button on Icy Veins, but we were receiving maybe 2 or 3 donations a month, so we decided it wasn't really worth having a button for that on every single page of the website
      Premium Membership
Users who want to pay a small amount every month to remove all ads and tracking can do so with our Premium Membership system.
      Conclusion
Many readers have a bad opinion regarding advertising, and we can't really blame them for that. I simply hope that this post will have shed some light on how things work in the background and why we don't have much control over the ads. Things should get better and better though, as advertisement networks take more and more proactive measures against bad ads.
