Enabled War Mode Increases XP Gains by 15%

Recommended Posts

War Mode in Battle for Azeroth is Blizzard's answer to ganking and World PvP. It's a mode that can be toggled on/off at will in Stormwind and Orgrimmar and enabling it will increase your Experience gains from all sources by 15% and opt you into World PvP.

It does not matter whether you play on a PvP or PvE server, everyone can participate in or completely turn off PvP in Battle for Azeroth. To incentivize War Mode, all players that have it enabled will receive the EnlistedEnlisted buff - Experience gained from killing monsters and completing quests increased by 15%.

War Mode

  • Enables World PvP with the opposing faction. Activates PvP Talents in the outdoor world.
    • This can only be turned on or off in Stormwind/Orgrimmar.
  • Enable War Mode to receive the Soldier of the AllianceSoldier of the Alliance/Solider of the HordeSolider of the Horde buff and use PvP talents in the outdoor world.

PvP Talent Slots

In Battle for Azeroth, you have four PvP talent slots and a bucket of talents to choose from. The first PvP talent slot is the same for every Class and you have three talent choices:

The other three slots obviously have more variety. We'll have a preview of all PvP talents up soon!

I like it, as someone who is going to spend time off work to rush to 120 then go ganking on the other island its nice to see a boost to the leveling process.

I wonder if this is going to lead to a lot of quest hoarding and waiting to turn in till you can turn on War Mode.

It sounds like an inefficient way to get experience to me though. As for Warmode, I think it is a good incentive.

This seems like a bad idea.

Incentivizing players for doing something is fine. I can understand that. But a 15% EXP boost is huge, and hiding it behind a giant sign saying *PvP or fall behind* is idiotic. It incentivizes subjecting yourself to PvP just to be able to keep up with other people, and a lot of players have no interest in having that over them out in the wild.

Putting in this system will make PvE players resentful, and for good reason. I severely hope that they do something else, or add an EXP bonus for PvE content too to compensate. Otherwise, non-PvP'ers are gonna loose on this, one way or another.

It will certainly add a bit of flavor to the world/server first lvl 120 race, but personally I'm not interested. Maybe when leveling alts, but not in BfA.

Server first isn't an achievement anymore. And  PvE'ers need to stop acting like getting to 120 first some how graduates you from the Harvard of video games - it's 2018 and anyone who has played this game for a long period of time could care less at this point. The time spent pvping will likely offset the XP gains.

If people want to collect a log of quests, turn on war mode, then turn in their quests they're still going to be subject to running around, handing in quests, and getting ganked.

I like that this introduces a CHOICE and some chaos. Bring it on.

Fair point, but you have to remember that this doesn't really cause any harm at all. Sure you might be ganked here and there but realistically you pace yourself how you want to be paced. Most of the raids or Mythic+ options will not be released until a couples weeks later (much like in Legion) so you have plenty of time to level to 120.

Also it's not like you won't be receiving any help at all from your fellow players!

So basically everyone is getting a 15% xp boost? There is absolutely zero risk of losing anything in this game at all in pvp, so why would someone not take advantage of this?

Edit: Also at max level, do you get 15% extra gold?

Given the population imbalances on most servers (Including the biggest Horde/Alliance dominated ones.) this is a no brainer.  Who is going to camp someone while leveling upon launch?  Leveling alts I can see it possibly being an issue but overall it’s a big MEH.

I paid actual money (before the bnet balance thing) to get away from World PvP so no incentive they offer is getting me to go back, but good for those that do it I suppose.

because of the new sharding tech when you turn on warmode the realm you are on doesnt matter anymore, you WILL see players that are ready for pvp.

Plenty of people will be wasting time running back to their corpses. There is a winner in each PvP fight, which means at least 50% of the people engaging in War Mode that actually fight are going to lose time compared to people that don't touch it.

Also, don't forget, rares, escort quests, quests hand-in hubs, they're all going to be far harder to get through with War Mode enabled.

From what I understand on how PvP servers work at present...players tend to ignore one another at the start of an expansion while leveling. I see no reason for this changing. So...essentially...PVPers will be getting a free 15% XP boost at the start of BfA until they start reaching cap and the ganking starts.

Edit: and I wonder how much War Mode will be utilized once we're a few weeks into BfA and there's lots of 120 level players. I;m guessing it will be minimal.

This is true, however, with the introduction of faction assassins, players will now have incentive to "interact" with each other for the 15% extra damage/healing buff.  I can see this promoting corpse camping and lvl 120 players hassling people who are still leveling, just to get the buff before going off to do world quests or whatever.

My opinion in this matter is simple: chaos is great bring it on!

Food for thought tho, if leveling as a group is often the most efficient way to go about it early on, it will be even more the case now. Grab a healer, mix in four dps and get ready to steamroll both the monsters and the enemy players who get in your way! Island expeditions World PvP version.

Personally, I'm not a fan, I think it hurts both pve and pvp people.

Kind of destroys the whole pvp and pve server thing. I play on Tichondrius a lot, it has a horde majority and is pvp enabled. I guarantee that tons of alliancr players will just say fuck it and disable pvp and then there will be no one to fight at max level.

On the other side, I imagine it's kind of AIDS for a person who purposefully chose a pve server to then enable pvp if they want to level faster.

Blizz gave people a choice of servers, they don't need to mess it up.

No need to worry about either of those things SMorcMan.

If you enable pvp mode then you will be placed along with similar numbers of enemy faction players from other servers when you go into the world. So it literally doesn't matter if you would be super outnumbered or super outnumber in your server because the world content is basically all xrealm in BFA outside of RP servers.

If people don't want the risk / stress of pvp happening they can just disable it at any point by going to their capital city and no one can touch you = same experience as pve server.

If you opt in to pvp and then complain about doing pvp then you're just out of it but I think people will figure it out in time. Also that choice was something a lot of people (like me) did in WoW launch 14 years ago. But I feel like being in a pvp server is straight up worse nowadays than being on a pve one because you waste time pvping for no reward. BFA is going to be a breath of fresh air in this subject!

That'd be an interesting way of possibly helping to even out one-sided servers. Moving to a completely Horde server as an Alliance with a free transfer is more appealing when you know it's not PvP enabled.

Thanks for the info both of you. I was not aware that they were balancing the numbers and also having all servers pve by default. Will definitely be a different experience than legion, my only hope is that they somehow prevent max levels from camping lowbie quest givers cuz that is and always will be annoying.

Well, arguments for both sides on War mode are valid.

From my experience, I turned it on in the Beta on my 2nd Mage, got ganked three times by a 120 DK, remembered why I hate PvP and why I'm so glad all servers are becoming PvE in Legion and ragequit. Someone else might enjoy the extra challenge.

The annoying thing is that you can turn it on and off only in Orgrimmar, I really hope they change that.

I'm guessing, if they let us change it outside of cities, they'll add a timer like they do with PvP currently, so people can't use it to pick their fights.

We have a Crest switch fix and weekly maximum increase, as well as a quest fix in retail, the big class tuning pass for Season of Discovery, and more in today's hotfixes.
      April 23 (Source)
      Items
Season 3 (Dreaming) crests are now correctly removed from players' currency tabs. Players have received a small amount of gold for their unused Dreaming Crests. Players can now earn up to 120 crests of each type per week in Dragonflight Season 4 (was a maximum of 90 per week in Season 3). This will allow for up to 8 upgrades per week, per crest type (was 6 in Season 3). Developers' notes: For players who don't reach their maximum crest earnings in a given week, we've implemented the increasing-seasonal-cap system from previous seasons. Please note that this increase is likely applicable to Season 4 only. We expect the weekly maximum to return to 90 for The War Within Season One. Quests
Resolved an issue where abandoning the quest "Something Worth Celebrating" could make it unavailable. Cataclysm Classic
The dates for Children’s Week have been adjusted so that the holiday begins and ends three days later than previously scheduled. Season of Discovery
Players who have completed the quest "Warranty Claim" but have misplaced their Pristine G-7 C.O.R.E. Processor before handing in the quest "Salvaging the Salvagematic" may now speak with the Lost and Found vendor Rix Xizzix in Booty Bay to recover the misplaced quest item. Fixed a Sunken Temple issue where the Atal'ai Defenders encounter would not reset properly. Druid The Natural Weapons talents now increases all damage done by druids in Season of Discovery, instead of just physical damage. The Gale Winds rune now reduces the mana cost of Hurricane by 60%. Swiftmend no longer consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth effect on the target when used. Developers’ notes: Please note that it does still require Rejuvenation or Regrowth to be on the target to be used. Hunter Rapid Killing now reduces the cooldown of Rapid Fire by 80% (was a reduction of 2 minutes). Chimera Shot weapon damage percent increased to 135% (was 120%). Explosive Shot base damage before attack power increased by 50%. Sniper Training has an additional new effect: while Sniper Training is at 5 stacks, Aimed Shot is instant. Serpent Spread now causes Multi-shot to apply Serpent Sting to its targets for 12 seconds (was 6 seconds). Steady Shot now deals 100% weapon damage (was 75%). Developers’ notes: There are more adjustments coming for Hunters. In general, we intend to improve the ranged playstyle and diminish the melee playstyle so that the two become more equivalent. Paladin Seal of Righteousness damage can now be critical hits. Sacred Shield’s duration is extended to 60 seconds (was 30 seconds). Crusader Strike has now gained an additional effect: Crusader strike now refreshes all judgement effects active on the target to a 30 second remaining duration. Seal of Martyrdom can now “twist” with other seals, including Seal of Command. Developers’ notes: Seal twisting was an interesting emergent effect that became popular during the original Burning Crusade, that utilized the slower server messaging system used in early versions of WoW to slightly extend the duration of the paladin’s active seal for a short time whenever a second seal was cast. This effectively allowed paladins to momentarily gain the benefit of two seals at once if they timed the application of a new seal to line up perfectly just before their weapon swing. We recreated this playstyle in Burning Crusade Classic and since then it’s been a popular request in other versions of original WoW, including Season of Discovery. As the game matures and we continue to listen to player feedback however, we recognize that for some, this is part of the charm and uniqueness of playing a paladin during those early eras of WoW’s history. We consider this change to be experimental and we will watch the performance and behavior of Retribution closely after this change. Priest Shadowform now increases all shadow damage done by 25% (was 15%). Rogue Saber Slash bleed now stacks up to 5 times. Saber Slash bleed now also increases the impact damage done by Sinister Strike and Saber Slash by 15% per stack for the rogue who applied the bleed. Saber Slash bleed now deals 3% of the rogue’s Attack Power in damage per tick (was 5%). Shaman Mental Dexterity now only triggers from dealing damage with Stormstrike and Lava Lash, and it now lasts 30 seconds (was 10 seconds). Burn now increases Flame Shock Damage by 100% and flame shock DoT duration by 6 seconds, and causes Flame Shock to strike up to 5 targets (was 3 targets). Developers’ notes: We’ve received a lot of feedback about the overall usability of mental dexterity, particularly for Elemental Shamans. This ability was not intended to be used by elemental, so the adjustments we’ve made are to help ensure its usage is a bit more enhancement-centric. To compensate, we’ve increased the output and usability of the Burn rune, with a slight quality-of-life improvement in the form of a Flame Shock duration increase which allows two Lava Burst casts to be used within a single Flame Shock duration.

Blizzard have announced that Season 4 will see an increased number of maximum Crests acquired each week, and also have the increased cap system for players that don't reach the maximum each week.

Players can now earn up to 120 crests of each type per week in Dragonflight Season 4. This was a maximum of 90 per week in Season 3. The increase will allow for up to 8 upgrades per week, per crest type.
