This guide contains detailed Strategy, Mulligan, and deck-building information to help you play Combo Priest in The Rastakhan's Rumble expansion.

Combo Priest is an archetype that has existed since the very beginning of Hearthstone. The deck has seen a broad range of builds over its long history, but all builds share the same goal of using the powerful synergy between the Divine Spirit and Inner Fire spells to create a huge minion to burst down opponents. Despite Combo Priest always existing in some form, it was the Journey to Un'Goro expansion that make the deck truly formidable by adding spell synergy cards like Shadow Visions and Radiant Elemental.

Following the February balance patch, Combo Priest has greatly risen in popularity as many of its weaker matchups have been affected by card nerfs.

Combo Priest is a very proactive deck that has minimal interest in opposing plays. In your Mulligan, you should primarily be looking for card draw tools to allow you to start assembling a game-winning combo as soon as possible.

In your opening hand, you should look for your card draw tools like Firetree Witchdoctor, Acolyte of Pain, Northshire Cleric, and Power Word: Shield in your opening hand.

Against Aggro decks that have explosive openers, especially Odd Paladin, you can keep Duskbreaker or Wild Pyromancer in your opening hand to help fight back onto the board.

4. Combo Priest Wild Strategy

In the early game, you will be looking to develop a board with card draw tools like Northshire Cleric, Firetree Witchdoctor, and Acolyte of Pain to begin cycling through your deck. However, you should consider your opponent's potential responses before doing so. For example, playing a Cleric into a class that can easily deal 3 damage, such as Druid or Rogue, is a poor choice as Cleric is a key source of card draw for Combo Priest. Similarly, if your opponent is likely to play a 3/2 minion the following turn, then it is also unwise to play out your Cleric on turn 1, unless you have a Power Word: Shield available to buff it the following turn.

Combo Priest decks are highly dependent on on buff effects, especially Divine Spirit and either Inner Fire or Topsy Turvy to close out games. However, there are far more buff effects in the deck than are ever needed to win the game. It is often worth using small buffs like Power Word: Shield and Unidentified Elixir to help prolong the life of your Northshire Clerics and Acolyte of Pain to maximise the amount of card draw you can extract from them.

As you reach the mid game, you should continue trying to draw cards where possible while trying to develop a board as solid as possible. If your opponent has managed to control the board in the early game, Duskbreaker can first be used to clear the board. If the board is empty or you have control of it, your primary aim should be to get a high-Health minion on the board like Twilight Drake.

Throughout the game, you should look for opportunities to draw large amounts of cards to rapidly assemble your combo. While there are many combinations available that are generally used, it is important to keep in mind how the various effects of cards in the deck interact to be able to spot combo opportunities. Firstly, you should look to find a way to damage minions on the board. This is most easily done with, but not limited to, Wild Pyromancer or Dragonmaw Scorcher. Secondly, you should find a way to draw the cards, which will always be Acolyte of Pain or Northshire Cleric. In the case of Acolyte of Pain, simply damaging the minion as many times as possible is enough. However, for Northshire Cleric, you should also look for Circle of Healing, or a Divine Hymn from Firetree Witchdoctor, to draw 1 card for every minion healed and quickly cycle your deck.

Shadow Visions is one of the most flexible cards in the deck and is a great tool for boosting consistency. For example, the two copies in the deck can aid in drawing key cards like Mass Dispel against a wall of Taunt minions or to generate final combo pieces to be able to close out games. Because it is such a flexible card, you should hold off using it too soon so that you can have a better idea of what card you are going to need from it. With the aid of Radiant Elemental, it is usually possible for you to have enough Mana available to play Shadow Visions and all relevant combo pieces in a single turn when you try trying to end the game.

When it comes to winning games, a specific set of cards is required. This usually involves using multiple copies of Divine Spirit followed by Inner Fire and often a Power Word: Shield or Unidentified Elixir beforehand on a minion to give it a huge Attack value to burst down your opponent. Against opponents that use Taunt minions, Mass Dispel is often required too, so that you can attack your opponent directly. These combos are possible as early as turn 3 and will sometimes take you a whole game to assemble, so it is very important to keep track of how much potential damage you have available at all times.

5. Combo Priest Wild Card Swaps

Combo Priest is a very flexible deck and has very few core cards aside from the spells needed to perform the final combo.

Lyra the Sunshard can be included to give even more card generation opportunities and to take advantage of the large number of spells in the deck.

Most Dragons in the game are viable in the deck and can be used in place of Dragonmaw Scorcher or Nightscale Matriarch.

Extra Arms can be included over Unidentified Elixir as a way to add even more buffs into the deck. However, you should not run both cards in the deck at the same time to prevent diluting your spell pool for Shadow Visions.

6. Alternative Combo Priest Wild Decks

This section of the guide contains some alternative Combo Priest Wild variants that can be used instead of the deck used in the main guide. The variants listed are still able to compete at Legend ranks but have minor differences in the way they play.

6.1. Wild Pyromancer Combo Priest Wild Deck

This version of Combo Priest cuts out the Dragon package in favour of a much more aggressive draw engine. The lower curve of the deck makes it much easier to get many minions onto the board to create more opportunities to use Wild Pyromancer, Northshire Cleric and Circle of Healing to draw cards incredibly fast. Injured Blademaster, Unpowered Steambot, Damaged Stegotron, and Tar Creeper are also used as powerful high-Health combo targets that synergise well with Circle of Healing.

7. Budget Combo Priest Wild Deck

This Budget Combo Priest follows on from the Dragonless version of the deck to avoid the cards in the deck with higher dust costs.

The strategy of this deck offers very little deviation from the Wild Pyromancer Combo Priest. The only notable difference is the lack of Lyra the Sunshard, which removes any contingency plan if the Combo strategy fails.

This Wild Combo Priest variant uses a very aggressive card-cycling strategy to draw into combo pieces as quickly as possible. Deathlord and Kabal Talonpriest are utilised to aid in pulling off combos. However, it is frequently possible to win without having minions on the board by temporarily stealing opponent's minions using Pint-Size Potion and Potion of Madness as your combo target.
