Control Warlock Archetype Guide

Control Warlock decklists often change significantly with the release of new expansions, but the feature which always remains is that the archetype relies on using its Hero Power, Life Tap, to gain card advantage. The extra cards afforded by Life Tap mean that there is an increased likelihood of having the cards in hand which you need.

One of the issues the archetype encounters is that it has to run on a low Health total due to the cost of Life Tap, and cards such as Hellfire. This means that Control Warlock will often have to include minions that restore Health, or gain Armor, so as to not die too easily while setting up its defenses.

With the release of Voidlord and Possessed Lackey in the Kobolds and Catacombs expansion, Control Warlock began to concentrate on repeatedly blocking the board with multiple Voidlords.

Below, you will find link to our deck lists for Control Warlock, starting with our featured deck, which we consider the most common variant.

The Year of the Raven rotation treated Control Warlock kindly. Although it lost Mistress of Mixtures and N'Zoth, the Corruptor, it retained almost all of the other important cards. Lord Godfrey and Voodoo Doll provide adequate compensation for the losses, and Control Warlock is a viable archetype.

This Wild Malygos Warlock Deck, often refered to as "Malylock" is a Control Warlock variant that uses Dragon synergies to control the board throughout the game. It uses Malygos in combination with Soulfires and Darkbombs for large amounts of burst damage to end games.

1. Aim of the Deck

This archetype gains card advantage through the use of the Life Tap Hero Power, while shutting down Aggro decks thanks to Possessed Lackey's ability to fetch Voidlord. Voidlords can be brought back with Bloodreaver Gul'dan which makes it almost impossible for minion-based decks to do further damage.

2. Strengths and Weaknesses

This archetype is very strong against decks which rely on minions to win the game. The Life Tap Hero Power provides consistency, while Voidlord makes sure that the opponent finds it practically impossible to deal further damage.

On the downside, this deck is very weak to burst and burn damage. It can struggle against Cubelock due to the burst, and to the burn of Secret Mage.

3. Key Cards and Crafting

There are several Legendary cards that can be played in Control Warlock. Bloodreaver Gul'dan is essential to all builds, but the others are optional. Bloodmage Thalnos, and Rin, the First Disciple both find their way into the archetype, but it can be played without those cards.

The Epic cards Voidlord and Possessed Lackey are essential.
