Dragon Priest Archetype Guide

Table of Contents

Dragon Priest is a historically strong archetype that utilised many of the powerful Dragons from the Blackrock Mountain expansion to play a curve of powerful Dragons that quickly snowball out of control. As Blackrock Mountain rotated out of the Standard format, the archetype shifted from full dragon decks to including just enough to be able to take advantage of Duskbreaker. The AoE effect of Duskbreaker is immensely powerful and enough to create a deck built around Dragons to be able to use it.

Although the variants of the archetype are built around the same cards, strategies can vary greatly. The powerful minions can be used to put pressure onto opponents in order to overwhelm them and squeeze out a faster victory. Conversely, decks can also favour a more Control style, using the powerful Discover effects to generate huge value and out-sustain opponents.

Below, you will find link to our deck lists for Dragon Priest, starting with our featured deck, which we consider the most common variant.

This Dragon Priest Wild Deck features full strength Dragon Priest with many powerful additions from the Blackrock Mountain expansion. It aims to use the exceptional stats of Dragon cards to play a strong curve of minions that can rapidly snowball out of control.

1. Aim of Dragon Priest

Dragon Priest decks aim to take full advantage of the power of Duskbreaker. The efficient AoE effect is able to punish almost any decks and consistently sets the foundation for strong board states.

2. Dragon Priest Strengths and Weaknesses

With the rotation of the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan expansion, Standard Dragon Priest variants lost access to their powerful Discover effects that almost guaranteed the ability to outvalue opponents.

The strength of Dragon Priest now lies solely on cards like Duskbreaker and Twilight Acolyte. Both of these cards are very effective at controlling the board and provide enough breathing room for Dragon decks to be built very flexibly.

3. Key Cards and Crafting for Dragon Priest

Duskbreaker is an essential card for Dragon Priest. The Battlecry effect makes it one of the most powerful cards in the game and the key to success with Dragon Priest. Without it there would not be enough Dragon synergy available.

Twilight Acolyte is another key card for Dragon Priest. The powerful Battlecry means that you can easily handle a minion of any size. It works in tandem with Duskbreaker by greatly weakening any minions that cannot be killed with the AoE effect.

Primordial Drake is a common card in many Standard decks due to its strong stats, Taunt, and AoE effects. It is also essential in Dragon Priest due to the lack of good Dragon options available and most decks running the bare minimum number of Dragons to enable Battlecry effects.
