Time Warp Quest Mage (AKA Exodia Mage) Archetype Guide

Time Warp Mage, often referred to as Quest Mage, is an archetype enabled by the Journey to Un'Goro expansion. The archetype aims to stall the game while completing the Open the Waygate Quest. Completing the Quest rewards the powerful Time Warp card, which provides the user with a second turn, opening up the potential for various One Turn Kill combinations that would not be possible in a normal turn.

In order to be successful, decks need to strike a balance between card generation tools such as Cabalist's Tome and Primordial Glyph to go towards completing the Quest and powerful Freeze Mage tools such as Frost Nova and Blizzard to slow down games to allow enough time to complete the Quest and finish off opponents.

Below, you will find link to our deck lists for Time Warp Quest Mage, starting with our featured deck, which we consider the most common variant.

This Giants Quest Mage Deck aims to stall the game using Freeze effects and Ice Block. It takes advantage of the Mana reduction effects of Arcane Giants and Molten Giants to add a huge amount of power to the board at a negligible cost and utilises Time Warp to allow them to attack immediately to kill opponents.

This Exodia Mage Quest Deck has much more emphasis on Quest completion than other variants. It uses the "Exodia" combo of 4 Sorcerer's Apprentices and Archmage Antonidas to create an endless supply of Fireballs to be able to burst down opponents from any amount of Health.

Aim of Quest Mage

This archetype aims to stall the game for as long as possible while also playing randomly generated spells to complete the Open the Waygate Quest. Once the Quest is complete and the appropriate combo cards have been drawn, Time Warp can be used to enable one of many powerful combos to kill opponents before they are able to react.

Quest Mage Strengths and Weaknesses

The requirement of generating 6 random spells and finding the Mana to play them while also needing to draw a very specific card combination to win the game makes Time Warp Mage a very slow archetype in general. As a result, it is quite vulnerable to faster decks that are able to maintain enough pressure to disrupt the completion of the Quest.

Conversely, the consistent power of Time Warp Mage combos make it especially powerful against slower Control decks that are unable to apply enough pressure, allowing enough time to complete Open the Waygate and draw into a win condition.

Quest Mage Key Cards and Crafting

Open the Waygate is an essential card to craft as the archetype fully revolves around using it to win the game.

Primordial Glyph is another card that is almost essential. It is a very flexibly card that is also great at contributing towards the completion of Open the Waygate, thanks to the Mana reduction of the Discovered spell being equal to the cost of the card. It is also occasionally possible for Primordial Glyph to Discover a copy of itself, which provides additional increments to the Quest counter at no additional cost.

Due to how slow Time Warp decks are, Ice Block also becomes a powerful tool. Having 2 additional turns where you cannot be killed is extremely powerful and are often neccessary to set up a position where you can end the game.
