Wild Mind Blast Priest Deck List Guide - Rise of Shadows April 2019
This guide contains detailed strategy, mulligan, and deck-building information to help you improve your Mind Blast Priest play for The Rastakhan's Rumble meta.
Mind Blast Priest is a deck that rose in popularity late in the Kobolds and Catacombs expansion. It is a hybrid archetype utilises a mix of Dragon Priest and Control Priest to maintain strong control over the board. While controlling the game, the deck aims to assemble a combination of burn damage like Shadowreaper Anduin and Mind Blast to burst down opponents when the time is right.
The Rastakhan's Rumble expansion has provided a few additional tools for Mind Blast Priest, specifically Firetree Witchdoctor and Dragonmaw Scorcher. These additional Dragon synergy cards provide the deck with a bit more flexibility and control, making it more viable for the meta.

The Mulligan strategy for Mind Blast Priest is primarily split between Aggro and Control decks. Against Aggro decks you will want access to a range of defensive tools as your goal is to simply survive. Conversely, against Control decks you will want to jump straight into cycling through your deck in order assemble a game-winning combo.
In all matchups, you can keep Northshire Cleric, Firetree Witchdoctor and Power Word: Shield in opening hand. This multi-purpose set of cards allows you to contest the board against Aggro and also create the foundation for cycling through your deck against Control.
The deck offers very few options to play on the first few turns outside of Northshire Cleric and Power Word: Shield. In general you should avoid playing your Cleric on Turn 1 as most opponents will immediately remove it. Instead, you should aim to save it for a later turn when it can be played in the same turn a minion is healed to help cycle through your deck. The exception to this is against Aggro decks, where the Cleric can be used to contest the early-game board and stop your opponent from snowballing out of control.
If you are playing against an Aggro deck, having key cards in your hand like Wild Pyromancer and Duskbreaker will greatly dictate how you play out your cards. If you have Duskbreaker in hand, with another Dragon available to activate it, you can usually skip the first few turns and use the Battlecry of Duskbreaker to swing back onto the board when you have 4 Mana. This play will allow you to save some of your cheaper cards to be weaved into later turns and put you in a better position in the long run. A similar effect can be achieved using a combination of Wild Pyromancer The Coin, Power Word: Shield, and other cheap spells. However, this combo is a much lower priority as it can offer you more value later in the game when combined with Acolyte of Pain or Northshire Cleric.
Once you reach the mid game you can start to develop your board and put pressure back onto your opponent. You have two solid 4-Mana plays in the form of Twilight Drake and Duskbreaker to secure the board. You should prioritise getting your Drake on the board as soon as it is safe to do so due to it having superior stats of the two minions. However, if your opponent has any minions on the board, then it is often better to play your Duskbreaker first to prevent dealing damage to your own minions.
Although Mind Blast Priest is primarily a Control deck, the win condition of the deck almost always comes in the form of a combo. To help you get into a position to win the game, you should always be looking for opportunities to cycle through your deck. The primary draw tools in the deck are Northshire Cleric and Acolyte of Pain. Both of these cards have excellent synergy with Wild Pyromancer and you should use it to help maximise your card draw. When combining Pyromancer with Acolyte, playing any number of cheap spells such as Power Word: Shield and Shadow Visions will suffice. However, when combining Pyromancer with Cleric, you should be additionally looking for Divine Hymn and ideally find a situation where you have multiple minions on the board. With this combo, you can use a cheap spell with the Pyromancer to damage the board and then heal everything back up with your Divine Hymn, drawing you 1 card for every minion you have on the board with the effect of your Cleric.
While navigating each game, it is important to understand your win condition in each matchup. Nearly every win will require the use of Shadowreaper Anduin in order to use the Voidform Hero Power to ping down your opponent. Without your opponent using any healing effect, a two-turn kill is available by using Alexstrasza for 9 Mana to set your opponent's Health to 15 and following it up with 2 Mind Blasts with 3 Voidform Hero Powers to deal a further 16 damage for 10 Mana. However, games rarely go that smoothly and further planning is usually required and you must be able to react to the state of the game.
- Against Aggro decks, you will often be able to skip the Alexstrasza part of your combo. Small amounts of damage you should have been able to deal to your opponent throughout the game in combination with Mind Blasts will often be more than be enough damage.
- Against Control, you should try and save up for a full combo and be aware of healing effects your opponent may have, such as Divine Hymn for Priests, Dark Pact for Warlock, and Malfurion the Pestilent for Druid.
- Against Druid and Warrior specifically, you should be very mindful of the amount of Armor they can gain as it can get out of control quickly and become impossible to burst them down. To help with this, you should aim to play Shadowreaper Anduin as early as possible. This will allow you to start using Voidform each turn to keep your opponent's Armor to a minimum. Additionally, as Alexstrasza does not remove Armor, you are free to use Mind Blasts to remove Armor if you ever have spare Mana.
Having your win condition in mind will also help you make much more informed decisions when using Shadow Visions. Because damage is not very relevant against Aggro decks, you will be looking to use Shadow Visions to gain additional healing like Divine Hymn or a cheap spell like Power Word: Shield for your Wild Pyromancer. Conversely, against Control decks you will almost always want to pick up burn damage in the form of Mind Blast to help you burst down your opponent.
Mind Blast Priest offers some flexibility in its card choices and has many options that allow it to be teched towards other matchups.
Holy Fire can be included to provide additional burst damage and healing against other Mind Blast Priests.
Harrison Jones can be included to provide weapon removal against Druids, Cubelock, Warriors, Paladins, Hunters, and Rogues.
Quick Tips and Tricks
- Use Wild Pyromancer to maximise your card draw from Northshire Cleric and Acolyte of Pain,
- Be mindful of how matchups will play out when picking cards from Shadow Visions. Pick burst damage against Control and healing or AoE against Aggro.
- Try to play Shadowreaper Anduin as early as possible to weave in as many Voidform Hero Powers as you can.
