1. Heroes Sonya Works Well With

In this section, we will look at the heroes that work particularly well with Sonya.

1.1. Abathur

Abathur Portrait Sonya's typical forward position make her a perfect for target for Abathur's Symbiote Icon Symbiote, as it is much more effective at a short range. Talents such as Adrenal Overload Icon Adrenal Overload and Adrenaline Boost Icon Adrenaline Boost are especially valuable to Sonya, who relies on keeping up with enemies to deliver Basic Attacks in order to fuel her Fury. Carapace Icon Carapace helps with keeping her alive.

1.2. Jaina

Jaina Portrait Jaina's abilities inherently have a potent movement speed reduction effect. This fact alone allows Sonya to greatly improve her uptime against anything that has been targeted by Jaina. Leap Icon Leap can also be used to set up for Ring of Frost Icon Ring of Frost.

1.3. Rehgar

Rehgar Portrait Rehgar excels at supporting melee Heroes; since Sonya is likely to require healing when engaging, a healer with strong burst healing and an on-demand shield that also provides area of effect damage (Lightning Shield Icon Lightning Shield + Earth Shield Icon Earth Shield) has everything Sonya could ask for. Earthbind Totem Icon Earthbind Totem can even be used to significantly improve her uptime.

1.4. Uther

Uther Portrait Uther is a boon for Sonya players, as she is relatively susceptible to burst damage, especially before her defensive talent choices become available. Holy Light Icon Holy Light and Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield have instantaneous effects that can reliably keep you alive through high pressure situations, whereas Cleanse Icon Cleanse is generally helpful against crowd control.

2. Heroes Sonya Is Countered By

In this section, we will look at the heroes that counter Sonya particularly well.

2.1. Jaina

Jaina Portrait Jaina counters Sonya for the same reason that they work so well together: Frostbite Icon Frostbite. Fighting against Jaina means that you will be working with your movement speed constantly reduced. Sonya's limited range also means that you are always at the mercy of Jaina's damage combo.

2.2. Raynor

Raynor Portrait Raynor has a reliable knockback effect, in the form of Penetrating Round Icon Penetrating Round, that very effectively keeps you away from him. Certain talents of his, such as Revolution Overdrive Icon Revolution Overdrive and Relentless Leader Icon Relentless Leader, make engaging him even more difficult as he levels up.

2.3. Valla

Valla Portrait Valla is the master of kiting. Vault Icon Vault is fast, has a short cooldown, and can be used to avoid your Ancient Spear Icon Ancient Spear, leaving you with no gap-closer and limited Fury. Multishot Icon Multishot, combined with her Frost Shot Icon Frost Shot talent, means that you will basically never be in range to attack her unless you use Leap Icon Leap. Her Strafe Icon Strafe Heroic ability has the unique property of being difficult to interrupt with Ancient Spear due to the fact that it allows movement.

2.3.1. How To Play Against Jaina, Raynor, and Valla

All of these Heroes have a major point in common: they are ranged Assassins, an archetype against which Sonya tends to struggle because she is unable to have meaningful attack uptime against them. Raynor and Valla both rely on specific abilities (Penetrating Round Icon Penetrating Round and Vault Icon Vault, respectively) to keep you away; pay attention to their use so that you may capitalise on their cooldowns to make your approach. In general, however, you may need to rely on allies to setup for you, typically with ranged crowd control of their own, so that you may then follow up. You may also wish to consider using Leap Icon Leap over Wrath of the Berserker Icon Wrath of the Berserker so as to create your own opportunities to engage. Flanking, especially from Brushes, can also allow you to deal some surprise damage and force the use of defensive abilities so that you may then try and apply more pressure with Ancient Spear Icon Ancient Spear.
