On this page, you will learn how to optimally play Uther in a competitive environment in Heroes of the Storm. Everything you need to know is explained, from general gameplay to specific tips and tricks.

About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Master player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. General Uther Gameplay

Just like most Support Hero, Uther's role throughout all stages of the game is to keep his allies alive (through healing — Holy Light Icon Holy Light, Holy Radiance Icon Holy Radiance, Protective Shield Icon Protective Shield, Storm Shield Icon Storm Shield, Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light) and relieve pressure from them (through utility — Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice, Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield, Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm, Cleanse Icon Cleanse, Shrink Ray Icon Shrink Ray). Due to his mediocre waveclearing, poor sustained damage, and limited unmounted mobility, Uther is always better off when paired with other players. Refer to the Talent Build section to help you decide between Divine Shield and Divine Storm.

As you must manage an increasing number of talent-based abilities (Protective Shield Icon Protective Shield, Cleanse Icon Cleanse, Shrink Ray Icon Shrink Ray, Benediction Icon Benediction, and Storm Shield Icon Storm Shield), Uther's initially simple playstyle tends to become more complex as games progress. Long cooldowns but relatively clear-cut usage rules make it wise to establish a priority list for your abilities, which changes depending on the situation at hand. This will be further discussed in the section below.

Positioning-wise, Uther should in general try and stand right behind his frontline while remaining within range of the backline. Being near yet behind your tank(s) allows you to reactively follow-up with Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice or Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm without being the first target in sight for skillshots and harassment. Being within range yet in front of your backline allows you to make it harder for your opponents to engage on them — which you do not want, due to their fragility — while being able to respond to aggressive dives, often initiated by abilities such as Judgment Icon Judgment.

Uther's remarkably unspecialized nature makes him a good pick for and against a broad spectrum of team compositions, and a beginner-friendly choice. More about synergy and counters here.

2. When Not Team Fighting

Since most of the talent choices in our suggested build do not directly impact minion waves, Mercenaries, or structures, we therefore recommend that you try and remain with at least one teammate at all times.

Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice makes Uther a relatively agreeable roamer, provided he is working with someone else that can capitalize on the short but reliable stun. Arthas, Diablo, Jaina, and Kerrigan are usually good partners for this, as first landing Hammer of Justice ensures that these Heroes can land their own follow-up crowd control abilities.

Should you not be in a position to roam, which is usually the norm, Uther lanes are typically difficult to kill due to his high instant healing and crowd control. It is, therefore, wise to stay with the usual Heroes that make for good ganking targets, yet can cover your weakness of lacking damage. Proper partners include Falstad, Jaina, Kael'thas, Nazeebo, Raynor, Sgt. Hammer, Sylvanas, Tychus, Valla, and Zagara.

Although experience soaking is important, it is wrong to be inert and exclusively do this. Always watch your minimap, and coordinate rotations with your teammates. Especially keep track of your team's most vulnerable lanes (i.e. those that die), and go there; Uther should never be expected to hold a lane on his own for any extended period of time. It is always helpful to use Holy Light Icon Holy Light on low health Heroes as as you travel by them so that they do not have to go back to base to heal and potentially lose out on experience.

3. Team Fighting

This is where the priority list we have referred to earlier comes into play. What you do in team fights depends on the situation at hand as well as your Heroic ability choice (Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield vs. Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm). Team fight situations can generally be analysed based on whether your team is the attacker or the one reacting to an attack. Being on the offensive requires a response that is wildly different than when you are on the defensive.

3.1. Team Fights Started By Your Team

Team fights are typically initiated through some form of crowd control that was, if possible, delivered against an important kill target or someone that was found out of position. In theory, you should have been behind whoever initiated for the impending follow-up. Uther's cooldowns are powerful but lengthy; make the best out of them by prioritizing the use of certain abilities:

Though it is usually undesirable to not be on the offensive, you cannot always predict, let alone control, who attacks who. Fortunately, Uther is the perfect Hero for responding to hostile initiations. Your priority list:

  • Pick a Heroic ability that both synergizes with your team composition and can respond to your opponents. In general, Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield responds to burst, and Divine Storm Icon Divine Storm combos well with area of effect crowd control.
  • Hammer of Justice Icon Hammer of Justice is an unmissable stun; use it to ensure that your teammate's own skillshots land.
  • Get your ability priority straight; it helps with managing cooldowns, and with generally being more effective.
  • Avoid overhealing with Holy Light Icon Holy Light.
  • Stay with your allies as much as possible; Uther is not independent.
  • Holy Radiance Icon Holy Radiance can be used to reveal cloaked Heroes; watch for the shimmer.
