New World PvP Tips & Tricks: Capture the Flag

Savvvo's Avatar by Savvvo

The launch of season 9 of New World: Aeternum introduced an all-new PvP activity to the game: capture the flag. The launch of capture the flag also comes with two unique maps, providing you a chance at one of the two every time you queue up for a match.

Although capture the flag is a short, instanced game mode that’s focused around having fun – there’s still a lot of competition and strategy involved. Plus, if you end up winning the game you get more rewards than the losing side, so you might as well try for the win every time!

In order to maximize your win rate in capture the flag, we’ve prepared a few helpful PvP tips and tricks that can help you once you get on the battlefield!

Choose Your Role

When you join the queue for capture the flag, you’ll be prompted to choose from three different roles: Damage, Tank, or Healer. When you select your role, be sure to play in that game style, as it will impact the overall composition of your team.

If you choose damage, focus on dishing off as much damage as possible on your opponents.

If you choose tank, consider being the flag bearer with your high defenses and health.

If you choose healer, get ready to keep your Life Staff busy and protect your tank as they run to your home base with the flag!

Use Consumables

When entering the capture the flag game, be sure to have your consumables ready to go! Prior to the match even starting you should consider using attribute-based food, a powerful honing stone, and a desert sunrise. This will help increase your overall damage output and survivability throughout the match.

Additionally, make sure you have all four of your quickslots filled with consumables. It’s recommended to have health potions, mana potions (if you’re using magic), regeneration potions, and even oakflesh balms or gemstone dust for physical and elemental absorption respectively.

In-Game Buffs

Unlike the other PvP game modes like Outpost Rush or Arenas, there are actually small, glowing icons directly on the map in capture the flag games that will provide you with a buff. This buff could be healing your health entirely, granting you a damage boost, or even granting you haste.

This icons look similar to what you see below, and are time-based. Once they are claimed once, a timer begins where it will then wait to respawn (sorry – this means you can’t just sit on top of the health buff)!

Based on where you are fighting on the map, stay aware of these in-game buffs around the map, as they could give you the edge in the fight you’re in!

Scoring Points

As we all know (hopefully), the primary goal of capture the flag is to capture the enemy’s team flag and bring it back to where your home base is. If you bring the flag back to where your flag spawns, and ensure that your own flag is still in it’s original place, your team will score one point.

In order to win the game, you need to score more points than the enemy team. With that being said, it’s important to be aware of not only where your enemy team’s flag is, but also your own!

If you see a player on your team has the other team’s flag and that they’re almost back to your home base, consider targeting the enemy that might be holding your own flag in order to have it drop and respawn back to your home base, allowing your team to score the point!

Capture the Flag Rewards

Simply by participating in this capture the flag activity will lead to rewards. If your team ends up winning, those will rewards will get even greater! These rewards include some gold, faction reputation, faction tokens, azoth salt, PvP experience, dark matter, a crate with lvl 65 gear, some seasonal experience, and even a gypsum!

Below is a quick preview of all this rewards after a win in capture the flag.
