Players Find Secret “Goodbye” Letter in New World’s Recent Expansion

With the recent news of New World: Aeternum servers officially be taken down in 2026, and the Nighthaven expansion serving as the final content release for the game, the community is scratching their heads and trying to determine what their next move will be.

Many players then began to remember a new “lore note” that they interacted with recently within the new Nighthaven zone. For those unfamiliar with New World: Aeternum, there are randomly placed pages scattered throughout the world of Aeternum, and players can walk up to them and interact with them to read a unique message (typically associated with the lore of the game).

The note can be found near the “Tower of Strength” point of interest within Nighthaven, on a small island (pictured below). If you’re a New World enjoyer, consider jumping on your character and reading it for yourself!

The island itself has nothing but trees, rocks, and this single note, titled “The Spirt of Aeternum”. It states the following:

“We were there when you first found Thorpe in the forsaken grove after dragging yourself across a foreign beach.

We were there when you found your first settlement, and explored its charm and denizens.

We were there when you fought pirates, tigers, corrupted, ghosts, and all manner of hazards across the land.

We were there when you set foot on forsaken sands filled with lost secrets and hidden dangers.

We were there when you discovered the untamed wilds filled with beasts and verdant jungles.

We were there when you crept into the dark heart of lands filled with opulence, madness, and terror.

Through it all we watched. We delighted. We reveled in your enjoyment of every perfect moment, every carefully crafted story, and we even bore witness to the joining of two souls who met here in Aeternum.

We did it all for you dear adventurer.

Thank you for so many stories, triumphs, and fits of laughter.

We raise a glass to our fallen comrades: Divya, Shaun, Kelvin, Aaron.

Goodluck, and good night.”

Some believe this was all just a coincidence, and some believe some developers saw it coming and snuck it in as a final goodbye. The note itself makes multiple references to the evolution of New World, and even included a reference of a recent marriage of two players that met within the game.

Whether or not this note truly was a “goodbye” note is up to you and your interpretation, but for many, it’s helping them say goodbye to Aeternum for good.
