Nintendo Direct delivered one of its biggest surprises right towards the end of the show! After years of waiting for new information about Kingdom Hearts IV, Square Enix finally revealed a first trailer for what is probably one of the most anticipated sequels. And perhaps even more surprising than the trailer itself was where it happened.
Many players, including us, expected Kingdom Hearts IV to be shown for the first time during a PlayStation State of Play, Summer Game Fest, or a dedicated Square Enix livestream. Instead, the game’s long-awaited return happened during Nintendo’s latest livestream today.
Square Enix did not announce a release date, but the trailer confirmed that Kingdom Hearts IV will launch on Nintendo Switch 2.
A Return After Many Years
Updates on Kingdom Hearts IV have been so rare in the last few years that at this point, everyone was wondering if it would even still happen. During every livestream, players were waiting for a trailer or any information about the game, but it never came. And today, when it was the least expected, we got a first full trailer!
That made today’s reveal especially exciting for longtime fans, who finally got another look at Sora’s next adventure.
Square Enix is still keeping many details hidden, but the new trailer confirms that development is ongoing and that the project remains one of the company’s biggest upcoming releases.
It is definitely a very welcome surprise!
Kingdom Hearts Collection Also Coming to Switch 2
The surprises did not stop there since Square Enix also announced Kingdom Hearts Collection [I-III] is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, giving everyone a chance to experience the entire series on Nintendo Switch 2. The collection launches on October 8, 2026, and pre-orders are already available.
This is a nice way to revisit the series before Kingdom Hearts IV arrives, and to introduce your friends to it if they have not played those games yet. It may be the perfect opportunity to finally discover one of gaming’s most beloved RPG franchises!
As exciting as the collection announcement is, however, there is little doubt about what everyone will be talking about after the show. After years of silence, Kingdom Hearts is finally back!
