AION 2 Focus Group Test Reveals Promising Gameplay!

NCSoft’s upcoming MMO, AION 2, recently held a closed Focus Group Test, offering a rare look behind the curtain at one of the publisher’s most anticipated projects. Set to launch on both PC and mobile, the game has bold ambitions, but the early impressions present a mix of optimism and caution.

Combat Feels Solid, With Action and Tab-Target Modes

Testers praised AION 2’s combat system, which allows players to switch between an immersive Action Mode (aim-based abilities) and a classic tab-target combat mode. Both are viable, though Action Mode may prove less effective in large-scale PvP due to reduced peripheral awareness.

Skill progression uses a point-allocation system, with bonuses unlocked at thresholds. Familiar mechanics like chained skills (mapped to Q and E), dodging, and Stigma-like abilities return. This creates a complex but easily accessible build system.

Character Creation & Costumes

The character creator was really loved universally for its depth and polish! Many testers called it one of the most versatile tools they have seen in an MMO. Ironically, however, cash shop outfits felt visually underwhelming, especially for a game expected to lean on cosmetics for monetization.

Streamlined PvE and Exploration Features

PvE content is clearly a priority. The test included 4-player and 8-player instanced dungeons, with role synergy and gear checks influencing success. Gear progression relies on socketing and upgrade gems, which dropped frequently but required large quantities for upgrades.

Helpful systems like automated pathfinding, non-automated combat, and adaptive dungeon mechanics have also been enjoyed, even if the UI and quest flow still carry a “mobile-first” feel.

Monetization: Cosmetic But Pay-to-Convenience

Here is where the concerns begin. While wings, mounts, and outfits seem mostly cosmetic, with earnable versions available, the test also featured:

  • Unlimited “instant resurrection” items purchasable with premium currency
  • Dungeon entry reset items gated behind paid currency
  • A potential Auction House-style market, similar to Throne and Liberty’s monetization

Additionally, the ability to reset dungeon timers and sell acquired loot could give paying players a gear progression advantage, even if Bind-on-Equip systems are in place.

PvP Not Yet Fully Established

PvP featured lightly in this test via the Abyss zone, where players earned PvP points and faced off during time-gated events. While not fully fleshed out, Realm-vs-Realm content is confirmed and expected to play a larger role at launch.

Staggered Release Lowers Hype

While Korean players can expect AION 2 by the end of 2025, Western audiences will have to wait until mid-2026. For a globally-anticipated MMO, that staggered release strategy has disappointed many, especially in a genre where early momentum often determines long-term success.

From this closed Focus Group Test, AION 2 does stand out as a technically polished, mechanically satisfying MMO, particularly for PvE players!
